[Back to School]

“Hey, it’s been a while!”

“How was your summer break?”

“How have you been?”

“I’m looking forward to the academy festival!”

The seemingly long but short summer break had come to an end.

The academy was buzzing with activity once again, students streaming into classrooms, exchanging stories about their vacations.

“You know, as much as I enjoyed the break, there’s just something about being back in school.”

“Hehe, that’s so you, Barrett,” said Tayte.

Today marked the reopening of the academy, and as members of the student council, we arrived a bit earlier than the rest of the students.

From the reports we received, it appeared that none of the students had faced major issues over the break, and there were no absentees.

“With no significant problems to tackle, we can prepare for the academy festival without any worries,” Jarvis remarked.

Tayte, Jarvis, and the rest of the student council shared my excitement about the festival, especially since we would be hosting students from Randolph Academy this year.

We planned to hold a meeting right after classes today.

–And so, after classes ended, we all convened in the student council room to discuss the academy festival.

But…

“Huh? Where’s Madeline?”

I had assumed everyone was present, but Madeline was nowhere to be seen.

“Do second years still have classes?”

“They should have been over by now…”

According to Raul, the second-year students had already finished their classes and were busy with their after-class activities.

“Madeline may be a free-spirited girl, but she’s not the type to miss a meeting without letting us know.”

Kleine was right.

Despite her happy-go-lucky demeanor, Madeline was quite serious at her core. Could a teacher have asked her to do something?

“Well, nothing we can do about it. Since everyone else has gathered, let’s begin the–”

–Just as I was about to start the meeting, there came an abrupt series of knocks on the door of the student council room. The forceful knocking suggested there might be some kind of emergency.

“Is the student council in here?!”

The girl shouting and knocking at the door had a panicked tone in her voice, confirming my suspicion of an emergency.

I quickly opened the door and ushered her inside the student council room.

Her name was Dorothy and she was Madeline’s friend and classmate.

According to her, “Madeline is gone!”

“Madeline’s gone?”

“””””Gone?”””””

The words hung heavy in the air, and we exchanged worried glances.

But hold on.

It had been less than an hour since classes ended. Wasn’t it odd for her to disappear so quickly? Did Dorothy have any evidence to support her claim?

I decided to ask her. “Uhm, what do you mean she’s gone?”

“Madeline… I believe she went into the underground library.”

“““““Underground library?!”””””

Huh?

Everyone, except for me, seemed utterly alarmed.

What was this underground library…? It wasn’t a part of the original storyline.

–Seemed like we were about to face a complex situation right at the beginning of the new term.
