Jing Xiaoqing gave birth without much trouble, only needing a few hours in the operating theatre in the end. The nurse said she had a girl, and both are safe and healthy. Of course, Bai Yao didn’t barge into her room to see, but called and told her to call him again when she needs help moving to a postnatal care centre.

She’s planning to stay there for a month, and Bai Yao promised to go pick her up then.

He also misses Mu Mu’er, so the next day, he returns to Qiaohai as soon as possible.

The train was delayed, though, and he was a whole hour late arriving in town.

Worried about Mu Mu’er, he was going to send him a message off the train when his phone dinged to reveal an emoji from the boy.

Bai Yao got the set of emojis for him from one of the groups he’s in, and downloaded it promptly – ‘Plump Sea Otters.’ Every sea otter inside is drawn with this spherical feel, like a ball of rice. They’re cute and immensely adorable.

LittleFur: [Woop~]

The little sea otter ball has a few tears coming out of its eyes. Poor guy.

It really brings Mu Mu’er’s imagery across perfectly.

He almost laughs out loud in the crowded train station.

On the way home, he runs into auntie Zhang, here on a walk after breakfast, and greets, “auntie!”

“Xiao-Yao! Back from your business?”

She tells him about how Mu Mu’er has fared these days, and told him not to worry, as he was able to take care of himself. He terribly misses him, though, and Bai Yao remained the topic du jour when she went to visit every day.

Bai Yao also finds his thoughts drifting to the little sea otter, his gaze equally shifting towards the restaurant. Seeing this, auntie Zhang lets him go, “Mu’er has been waiting for you every day. Now go, and remember to bring him along when you have to go out of town. He really misses you.”

Bai Yao thanks her and quickly goes home.

Inside, though, Mu Mu’er is not at the door. Bai Yao thought he might have brought a chair out to sit and wait for him.

He grabs his keys to open the door, but it won’t turn the whole way – he realises the door is open, unlocked.

Concerned, he quickly enters with furrowed brows.

Before he can call out ‘Mu’er,’ a familiar, but also foreign form enters his vision immediately. He stops, his eyes widened.

Hearing the door, Wen Yue turns and sees Bai Yao, showing him a smile.

“Hey.”

Two years ago, he didn’t even so much as offer a farewell before leaving for good. His eyes brighten in contrast this time, and he is greeting him like an old friend instead of offering an apology.

Bai Yao thinks he’s about figured out what’s going on, and his gaze quickly leaves Wen Yue, falling onto Mu Mu’er.

The boy appears quite awkward standing near the kitchen entrance. His eyes are welling up. No actual tears yet. He didn’t even seem to have noticed Bai Yao’s return.

Bai Yao quickly walks over to Mu Mu’er, and holds him by the shoulder, “baby, look at me.”

Mu Mu’er’s eyelids are slightly wet as well, so Bai Yao gently wipes it for him, and coos, “don’t worry. I’m back, no need to cry.”

The boy looks up at Bai Yao with a crumpled face. He shuffles forward into Bai Yao’s embrace, smothering his face in the man’s chest.

His voice is muffled, “Mu’er waited really, really long…”
“Mu’er did not cry,” he sniffles, “Mu’er missed Yaoyao.”

Wen Yue speaks up, “Yao-ge…”

Bai Yao is definitely angry, and stops him before he can finish. Without looking, he immediately orders him to leave, “the restaurant opens at four, and we are closed right now. Please go away.”

Wen Yue has not had an easy time rising to prominence in the modelling industry, given his short stature and rather androgynous looks. His family fortune, and possibly support from authoritative figures, were the only reasons he made it this far.

That is to say, he’s not quite talented in front of the camera, but he definitely has training in shamelessness.

Of course, no one knows if Wen Yue knows Bai Yao is angry, though he’s clearly taken in by Bai Yao’s hostile form. He walks closer, as if enchanted, “I miss you, so I came to visit.”

Bai Yao takes a step back with Mu Mu’er in tow, shielding him behind. He extends a finger to block Wen Yue’s advance on his chest coldly, “stay away from me.”

He would rather not touch him with a ten-foot barge pole.

Mu Mu’er is standing behind Bai Yao, tugging at the man’s clothes. Bai Yao extends his other hand to take hold of the boy’s shaky hand while facing down Wen Yue.

“You’re scaring him,” Bai Yao’s tone softens a little into a question, but he is still gritting his teeth, “what did you tell him?”

“Nothing, really, just who I was with you,” Wen Yue’s gentle appearance cracks a little as well, “you’re still this rough after two years, huh.”

“I don’t think you and I are anybody to one another.”

“It’s just been two years. I miss you, but I couldn’t come because I’m busy with work. If you don’t have anybody yet…” Wen Yue stops speaking, his intents evident enough right now. Licking his lips, he continues, “you’re the best I’ve ever had. None of them were nearly as good as you, or at cooking.”

Bai Yao is glaring at him, speechless.
