After breakfast, when Bai Yao is cleaning up, Qi Ya finally calls to share the news of his holiday confirmed. Though the length of the holiday is only guaranteed for at least three weeks or so.

So they then discuss where to go for a trip. Qi Ya decides it might be better to pick somewhere close for the circumstances. And also, not crowded, and neither of them having been, for the sake of freshness. Sounds like it’d end up a few days' trip, then.

Given the autumn weather, they settle on camping. Mosquitoes and other insects are less active, and it’s not too cold as long as they don’t stay out until the dead of night.

Therefore Bai Yao suggests that island off the coast of Qiaohai. They can pitch a tent up on the hill and sleep in sleeping bags for a few days. Just the three of them.

He’s actually been planning to go there with Mu Mu’er, to see the rumoured starry night sky there.

Qi Ya has also not been to that island, only knowing its reputation of having picturesque scenery. Going in late autumn and early winter is quite appropriate.

And also, according to him, he’s still not tired of life in tents after a few months’ work in one, somehow. Reaching an agreement, he says he will come some time after packing stuff the day after tomorrow.

After hanging up, he sees Mu Mu’er counting his seashells on the sofa while singing some melody. His mind is playing out how he will tell him about the trip, though he suspects he wouldn’t even need to ask to have him tag along, since he trusts him no matter what he asks him to do or takes him to.

He watches him play for a bit longer before saying, “Mu’er, want to go on a trip with me and Qi-ge in a few days together?”

“Sure!” Mu Mu’er leaves his seashells behind to hop close to Bai Yao for hugs, “where are we going?”

“The island near the town there, by ferry. Mu’er can pick up all the little shells there, and we will camp on the hill at night, and watch stars,” Bai Yao pulls the boy in to sit in his lap, and smooths his hair a little, “what do you think?”

Bai Yao spoke too long, and Mu Mu’er only manages to capture a few keywords.

“Camp?”

He is not too familiar with this, and after thinking, fails to work out what this thing could be. So he blinks, waiting for an explanation from Bai Yao.

“Yes. We build a tent, and sleep in sleeping bags. We can lie down on the grass to watch stars.”
“Not house?” Mu Mu’er wonders after some hesitation. His excitement has faded a little.

Being this close to Mu Mu’er, Bai Yao can see that the little guy is becoming a little bit reluctant, and even fearful.

Then he recalls something. The boy has been living by himself for six years, exposed to the elements, without a house. He had to spend nights crowding himself into a crevice between rocks.

It was the wrong call to go camping. Mu Mu’er’s sense of safety and security is newborn and fragile. He might be triggering bad memories to have him camp outside. He was careless.

Bai Yao immediately decides to abandon the venture, and gets his phone out to call Qi Ya, but while he is fumbling his fingers, Mu Mu’er asks quietly, softly, looking up at Bai Yao, “with Yaoyao?”

Bai Yao, tall as he is, when letting Mu Mu’er sit on his legs, sees the latter’s feet almost dangling off the ground entirely. He also has to twist his body quite a lot to look at him in the face. He’s truly a good little treasure in his lap.

The distraction delaying the answer makes Mu Mu’er nudge himself more into Bai Yao’s lap. His voice turns snuggly and sweet, like a dumpling drenched in sugar coating, “Mu’er wants together…”

Bai Yao caresses Mu Mu’er on the head while answering with a melting heart, “of course. Yaoyao will never leave Mu’er.”

Ever.

“Ok!” Mu Mu’er’s worries appear to disappear in no time, “with boyfriend!”

Happy, he then lies on Bai Yao’s chest, relaxed, “no house, but with Yaoyao!”

Bai Yao asks, “Mu’er is not scared?”

“No. Mu’er is not scared. Mu’er has Yaoyao, the big fluffy cat, and is not scared,” he declares, “Mu’er can also protect Yaoyao, Mu’er… is strong!”

Well, the lack of confidence is showing through his voice when the last words are uttered, but his resolve is firm. Bai Yao actually thinks, worryingly, if they ever run into danger, Mu Mu’er will rush at him without hesitation, even if he is only a soft little sea otter.

Mu Mu’er, meanwhile, has straightened up to bare his teeth the way Bai Yao taught him, while also trying to mimic the deep growling noise from his throat, which just sounds like ‘aroo’s.

His canines aren’t as long or sharp as Bai Yao’s, and he can’t control his facial movements enough to make an actual threatening expression. Instead, he just has two tips of his canines poking out, while widening his eyes as much as possible.

Honestly, he’s just a cute little kitty at this point.

Chuckling at the heartfelt performance, Bai Yao decides to fiendishly poke the little guy on the waist. Mu Mu’er, who just declared his intention to protect, ‘falters’ almost immediately, falls tickled onto Bai Yao, who leans down to kiss, sweeping his tongue across the boy’s canines once more, saying, “very strong and ferocious, my dear Mu’er. You’re amazing.”

Then he lengthens the kiss until finally, the boy begins whimpering meekly and well up in the tear ducts, which is when Bai Yao lets him go, and observe the poor little sea otter lying on him helplessly while he himself leans back into the sofa with a smile.
