The silence stretched in the room, making Luo Lin’s labored breaths more audible. Surely, he was in a lot of pain.

Seeing him like this, Shen Lei gritted his teeth and hugged him tightly. He knew it wouldn’t help. It couldn’t take the pain away, it couldn’t heal him, it could do nothing but maybe, just maybe, tell Luo Lin that he wasn’t alone. Well, in case he was even able to register anything in his pain. That was all that he could currently hope for.

Yun Bei Fen tugged at Mei Chao Bing’s sleeve, hoping that he would come up with something.

There was so much hope in his eyes that Mei Chao Bing had trouble even looking at him. He didn’t want to disappoint him. When it came to this little bunny of his, he wanted to give him everything. And saving the people that were close to him was one of the most important things. But he just didn’t know how.

He reached out and pulled Yun Bei Fen into his arms as well, gently stroking the back of his head. Just like Shen Lei, he had nothing else left other than trying to give some comfort. It wasn’t much but what else could he do?

Yun Bei Fen also slowly realized that maybe Mei Chao Bing didn’t know what was up either. When that thought crossed his mind, he couldn’t help but stiffen. This … If even Mei Chao Bing didn’t know what to do, what would happen to his third senior martial brother?

For once, he actually pulled out of Mei Chao Bing’s arms and went to kneel down at Luo Lin’s side, grabbing onto a part of his robe. He stared up at him, hoping that maybe he would just wake up on his own and tell them that it had just been some kind of nightmare and that he was alright now that he had woken up.

Unfortunately, nothing of the like happened. Instead, Luo Lin seemed to curl up even further.

Shen Lei’s brows furrowed tightly. He reached up to grab onto the back of his head and stabilize him only to hiss when he touched him. "He is burning up."

Elder Baili frowned but at least this was something that they could do something about.

He didn’t even need to say anything. Mei Chao Bing already rushed out of the room, returning with some herbs after a moment. Since he had stayed around for most of the day, he had heard some of the instructions and he knew that this herb was able to reduce fever. It wasn’t one of the spiritual herbs but instead a normal one that they had managed to find. It actually wasn’t mature yet but, right now, they didn’t have much of a choice.

He handed it to Elder Baili to process, going to kneel down behind Yun Bei Fen and rubbing his arms, hoping that maybe treating the symptoms would allow them to prolong the time they had to figure something out.

After a moment, Elder Baili returned with a paste that could be applied to the skin and would hopefully be able to help.

Shen Lei pulled back a little, allowing him to brush it onto Luo Lin’s forehead before leaving the remainder for another treatment later on. For the moment, it didn’t seem to do much but some was better than nothing.

With that thought, Baili Chao also looked his disciple over, trying to find something else that they could do. Unfortunately, he came back with nothing. They could probably give him something against the pain but he didn’t have anything on him and there was nothing in the garden that he knew of that had the right properties either.

Just when he wanted to ask Mei Chao Bing to go and ask Elder Xing if he had something, Zhi Guan returned with two martial sisters in tow. One of them was Tan Xin of their own sect while the other was Taishu Min from the Zhen Yan Sect.

Baili Chao raised his brows, a little surprised that this was what his first disciple had gone to do but then, any option they tried was good even if it only brought them closer to a solution a single step.

He moved away from the bed and motioned at Luo Lin. "This might be because he got into contact with the blood of the red priest or maybe there is another reason. We can only guess.

The two women stepped forward, taking a look at him as well. Tan Xin gently grabbed his wrist, searching for a pulse and trying to figure out what was going on from there.

On the other hand, Taishu Min just took a general look at him, trying to figure out something from that. To be honest, she wasn’t as well-versed in refinement and was more of a general cultivator so she couldn’t really say much about this. She only felt that it was likely that this had to do with the blood.

Thinking of that, she sighed. "I’m sorry. I probably should’ve given more of a warning."

Elder Baili shook his head. "Don’t blame yourself. You told him that you thought that something like this might happen. It was Ah Lin who insisted on it. You couldn’t have known."

Taishu Min didn’t argue but inwardly, she couldn’t help but figure that Elder Baili probably wasn’t right. She had seen how Luo Lin looked when they had arrived. He had been distressed, completely unlike how his normal self would probably behave.

At that time, he would’ve done anything. And she probably shouldn’t have allowed that. She shouldn’t have handed over the blood if, in the end, it would just mean him exchanging his life for that of his lover. That kind of burden, she didn’t wish it on anyone.

And now, seeing the look in Shen Lei’s eyes, she really regretted her choice. But alas, it was too late to change. And now, they could only try to deal with what was currently happening. Whatever the outcome, they would have to live with it.
