Mei Chao Bing nodded patiently, even though he couldn’t help but once again think of how the colors seemed to be randomly assigned. And then there was the question of how they would have time to plug the crystal into one of the three depressions and change halfway through if they needed something else. There certainly wouldn’t always be time for that.

Even though Yan Hong Min might have thought of almost everything, he probably hadn’t thought much about ease of use when out on the mission. At the very least, the first two modes didn’t suggest as much. For now, he could only hope that the last mode would be more intuitive.

Yan Hong Min didn’t seem to notice his expression. He simply switched over and then excitedly showed Mei Chao Bing. “This is what I call the “Ultimate Mode”. In this one, all sects I had a sample of can be recognized. So that means you will not only see the righteous sects but also the demonic sects. They all have a color assigned to them, although I did have to change it up a bit compared to the second mode. I call that “Demon Mode”, by the way, because, well, it’s for the demonic sects.” He looked at Mei Chao Bing, waiting for him to comment on that.

Mei Chao Bing opened his mouth but then didn’t know what to say. Right now, the so-called ultimate mode was only showing a bunch of white spots around the yellow one because they were in the Teng Yong Sect. If they were outside with a team made up of disciples from the four great righteous sects and had to confront a group with disciples of several demonic sects … he was afraid it would be difficult to see through the result at a glance.

He pressed his lips together before he looked up at Yan Hong Min’s face. “Is there also a list with colors for this mode?”

Yan Hong Min looked at him as if he was offended. “Of course!” Then, he pulled out a scroll of paper and handed it to Mei Chao Bing. “That was one of the first things I made.”

Mei Chao Bing nodded. “I see.”

He looked over the list and felt a headache. Not only were there a lot of sects, but the colors were … well, they wouldn’t have been intuitive in the first place when it came to the demonic sects considering that those weren’t conveniently associated with colors.

In this case, they would also be hard to tell apart because Yan Hong Min had used colors like coral, salmon, apricot, cinnabar, and jasper. The worst part was that he hadn’t thought of assigning those colors to related sects but there were both righteous and demonic sects with these colors next to their names.

Yan Hong Min waited for a moment and finally bobbed up on his toes. Eh, he had watched this guy in front of him grow up because of his little junior’s obsession but he had never realized just how tall he had gotten or when that even happened. Had it been while his little junior was in closed-door cultivation?

He shook his head at himself for even wondering about that in the first place and then motioned at the list and the device. “So, what do you think?” He was pretty sure that there was nothing to be improved about his invention but then, he should give Mei Chao Bing the courtesy of asking considering that they knew each other.

Mei Chao Bing gave a hum before he finally looked up. “It’s about as I expected after seeing the prototype before. Uh … just one question: How difficult is it to assign the colors?”

Yan Hong Min blinked his eyes. “Not that difficult. Why?”

“Hm …” Mei Chao Bing hesitated for a moment. These definitely needed changing or it would end in a disaster but he had seen before that Yan Hong Min wasn’t necessarily open to criticism. He should better be careful about how he phrased this. “Well, I’m afraid it might be a bit difficult to always look at the list and while I could memorize this, there is no saying who will have to use the device while in the border region. We can’t really make all the disciples do that.”

Yan Hong Min nodded, feeling that this was quite sensible. “Well, then what should I do?”

Mei Chao Bing tilted his head a little and then motioned at the two of them. “Well, for the righteous sects, maybe we could just use the colors associated with the guardians? Like our Teng Yong Sect’s black warrior meaning a darker color for us, the Jian Chu Sect’s blue butterfly making blue pretty easy to remember, and the red priest of the Zhen Yan Sect for red …”

Yan Hong Min nodded slowly. “Well, I guess we could do that. Although I feel like it’s a pity. Our robes are white. That would have been easy to remember as well.”

Mei Chao Bing glanced at their robe which was indeed white and wondered how exactly Yan Hong Min had come up with the colors. Could it be he had really had a reason for all of them? But then, it didn’t matter. “It’s just that in the heat of the moment, the disciples might have some trouble remembering it when it is about another sect. The names of the guardians are quite well-known though and since the color is literally part of their title …”

Yan Hong Min nodded and carried the device to his desk. “I get it, I get it. I shouldn’t have based this off my own intellect.”

“… yeah.” Mei Chao Bing chose not to comment on that any further and simply watched as Yan Hong Min got busy. Meanwhile, he pondered how to bring up the matter with the other colors.

Yan Hong Min whistled faintly and then looked up. “Eh, since you’re not busy, use the time to think about the other colors. I need somebody else’s thoughts on that. Clearly, the others won’t get it otherwise.”

Mei Chao Bing heaved a sigh of relief. Well, so much for that.
