Back in the small town in the border region where the Teng Yong Sect had its outpost, Shang Qiang watched blankly as Yun Bei Fen repeated the motion of drawing the arrays in front of him.

He had taught him each of the twelve arrays one by one, only having him repeat them once since there wasn’t much time. Strangely enough, by the time they finished, nothing could be seen of those two disciples that were supposed to arrive yet.

While Elder Baili worried and Tong Chen’s expression also looked more solemn than usual, Shang Qiang simply took it as an opportunity to observe this youngster in front of him for a while longer. Thus, he had him draw all twelve arrays in a row, without bothering to repeat them for him again.

Contrary to what Shang Qiang had expected, Yun Bei Fen actually managed to do it and with no mistakes at that. “Huh.” The white warrior looked at the last symbol that had been drawn into the sand and pursed his lips. Should he say that this child was talented or should he sigh that despite having this kind of memorization ability, he still knew so few skills?

He looked up at Yun Bei Fen with a complicated expression and then turned to Mei Chao Bing who hadn’t said a word throughout after taking over marking the guide the white jade had drawn for them. “You.”

Mei Chao Bing looked back, not sure what might be up.

Shang Qiang’s lips twitched. “In the future, if there is time, you teach him a bit more.” Really, this was just … well, he couldn’t even put it into words. How come this disciple had such a low level and was hardly able to do an attack? Clearly, the talent was there!

Mei Chao Bing smiled and hurriedly gave a nod. Inwardly, he felt that the white jade was probably thinking too much though. Honestly, Yun Bei Fen’s problem had never been that he wasn’t able to remember or not dedicated enough, or not willing. No, the whole problem he had, lay in his incredibly poor comprehension ability. In other words: His little bunny simply wasn’t that smart.

Thinking about it, Mei Chao Bing had a headache himself. You could motivate a person if you found the right angle and you could even work on their dedication to training through one means or the other. Memorization was more difficult but you could make up for it by being more dedicated. The one thing you couldn’t really do much about was your ability to comprehend. So Yun Bei Fen had really gotten the short end of the stick when he was blessed with being a passionate, hard-working person but also cursed with lacking the insight to make use of it well.

The worst thing was that your comprehension ability wasn’t just limited to learning skills. Yes, for most cultivators, that was the most important role it played because, without it, you usually wouldn’t make it far. After all, people with poor comprehension ability were seldom like Yun Bei Fen and managed to power through the low levels of cultivation simply by taking in spiritual energy and advancing this way.

Usually, cultivators would need to go on missions to make more experiences and gain enlightenment to break through their bottlenecks. Somehow, Yun Bei Fen had never encountered any though. In a sense, he was really lucky. Unfortunately, it wasn’t likely that this would continue. In the future, he would probably also encounter such a time when he needed to find the right inspiration to go further on the path of cultivation.

At that time, things would be difficult. Because this was where one’s comprehension ability came back into play: On a mission, you needed to be able to observe your surroundings and come to conclusions based on what you saw.

Younger disciples struggled with this but after getting some experience, they usually managed to get better. Still, the basis for that was their comprehension ability. As long as that was at least average, you could finish a mission just fine. With Yun Bei Fen’s … it was hard to say.

Mei Chao Bing looked at the stack of paper with arrays drawn on them and felt complicated in his heart. Missions were a problem but that was one they could think about at a later time. Right now, there simply was no way to deal with it. The fact that they had managed to teach Yun Bei Fen some new skills in just a few weeks made him have hope though. This clearly showed that not all was lost yet.

Yes, maybe Yun Bei Fen would always struggle comprehending matters. But this didn’t mean that he couldn’t learn other things. One way or another, they would manage to turn him into a good cultivator that could protect himself no matter what happened.

Mei Chao Bing glanced over his shoulder at the door to the courtyard where Elder Baili should still be standing. Next door, Luo Lin and Shen Lei were busy exploring the former’s hopefully newfound abilities. Soon, Zhi Guan would also return and in the Teng Yong Sect, there was still Yan Hong Min. With these people at Yun Bei Fen’s side, no matter how much he could understand himself, he wouldn’t be too much at risk. Especially so if they managed to win this war against the demonic faction.

Mei Chao Bing took a deep breath and then gently pushed Yun Bei Fen from his lap. “I’ll go and see whether your Master knows anything new. You continue to practice with the guardian as long as there is still time.”

Yun Bei Fen pursed his lips but still nodded.

Seeing his lover looking aggrieved, Mei Chao Bing leaned down and kissed his temple. “Don’t worry. I’m just going to check so I’ll be back in a moment. You’ll hardly notice that I’m gone.” He smiled and then walked out before Yun Bei Fen could protest. Honestly, it was a bit hard to always have to say goodbye. He had definitely imagined the beginning of their relationship to be different when the idea originally came up.
