In the rooms, Song Yu Zheng plopped down on the edge of the bed, watching as the disciples outside passed by the door to get to their own rooms. “We probably won’t be here for long before we can return to the sect.”

Zhi Guan didn’t even look at him and instead went to claim the bed in the farthest corner. This should be the right choice considering he wasn’t of the same sect as the other three and not that familiar with them.

Even though he didn’t seem to be interested in what Song Yu Zheng was saying, he still listened intently. He had said ‘return to the sect’, not ‘to the headquarters’ so this should mean that he thought they’d go back to the Wu Yun Sect itself. In that case, they expected to finish up their plans here shortly. That really wasn’t good news.

Lu Wei and Wen Xiang also sat down, nodding along to Song Yu Zheng’s words.

“We’ve been here for so long. I really can’t wait to go back. It’s just not the same with everyone all in the same place.” Lu Wei glanced at Zhi Guan and cleared his throat. “No offense, you’re alright but god, some of the disciples of the smaller sects …” He rolled his eyes, clearly having a low opinion of them.

Wen Xiang also nodded. “Yeah, I mean, just think of that junior of yours! And now imagine having to deal with that times a hundred.”

Zhi Guan thought of Yang Wu Huang and indeed had to admit that he wouldn’t want a hundred juniors like that. It was much better to have juniors like his own three. Even though the second one could be a bit problematic from time to time, he also wasn’t too annoying in comparison. Thinking about it this way, he slowly nodded. “You’re not wrong. I’d hate to have to deal with that.”

Wen Xiang hummed. “So you see: That’s how we feel since we were sent here. The ones who were allowed to stay back at the sect grounds are so much luckier. I mean, the benefits will likely outweigh the annoyance now but Heaven, do I wish they would hurry up.”

Song Yu Zheng cleared his throat and gave Wen Xiang a pointed look.

Zhi Guan glanced at him, wondering if he was still suspecting him and was thus trying to shut him up.

Wen Xiang also didn’t seem to get it. He tilted his head, his brows slightly furrowing.

Song Yu Zheng sighed and motioned to the door. “Isn’t it nice that senior martial brother Mu came to lead us for the last few days? That just goes to show how much importance the Elders attach to this mission.”

“Alright?” Wen Xiang was still confused for a moment but then thought of who Mu Qing was and suddenly felt enlightened. “Oh! Oh, I get it …”

Song Yu Zheng raised his brows but refused to respond to that. Instead, he turned to Zhi Guan. “How about the Elders of your sect? Judging by your skills, they’ve at least made a few good decisions about who to send. That junior though …”

Zhi Guan gave a thoughtful hum, unsure how to respond to that. He knew a bit about the demonic sects. Enough to pretend to be part of one at least. He didn’t have detailed knowledge though. In fact, if Song Yu Zheng asked about any Elder in particular, he wouldn’t know if the name was true or fake. At that point, his flimsy excuse for a fake identity would be pierced at once. Thus, he had to be careful about what he said.

“Same as everyone, I guess? When it comes to that junior, I have to admit that his skills might be decent even if he’s an eyesore. I mean, my sister might not be that smart but she has to have seen something in him, right?” He furrowed his brows and looked at Song Yu Zheng as earnestly as he could as if he was really asking for somebody to comfort him that his sister wasn’t totally lacking in brains.

Song Yu Zheng stared back, suddenly reeling. “… right.” He didn’t even know this guy’s sister so what was he supposed to say? He hurriedly tried to think of a topic he could change to. “Well, we’ve already come here. Even though senior martial brother Mu said we are supposed to patrol in the next few days, it’s likely just a precaution because of what has happened at the headquarters. It’s not going to take that much longer until we’re done here.”

Zhi Guan nodded faintly, hoping to seem as if he had any clue what they were talking about.

Wen Xiang who was sitting closest to him hummed. “I wonder though. Doesn’t it still rely on that boy from the Lin family? At least that’s what I heard. So far, it doesn’t seem like they’ve made any progress on that front. I mean, I haven’t heard anything at least.”

Zhi Guan looked at him, now completely lost. The Lin family? He tried to think of whether there was any cultivation clan on the demonic side but if there was, he had never heard of them. He only knew about a few families on the righteous side but if there was a Lin family, he had never heard about them.

Anyway, was this family being somehow involved in the demonic side’s plan something he should know as his current identity? As a member of a smaller sect, probably not. But then, he couldn’t be sure so it wasn’t good to ask about it either. He’d have to act ambiguous unless the others let something slip.

Song Yu Zheng shook his head. “I haven’t either but it’s not like we were told in the first place so don’t think too much.” Indeed, when it came to the three of them, even they hadn’t been told despite being of the Wu Yun Sect and had only coincidentally overheard something before they left for the headquarters.

The true plan with all its details was only known to a few select people and there wasn’t one of them among the disciples that had been sent on the current mission. Well, other than Mu Qing, of course. As Elder Feng’s disciple, he was naturally aware of more things than others.
