Having made up their minds, Mei Chao Bing and Song Mu didn’t hesitate. They both grabbed their swords and directly flew up where they were. It took a while to reach a height where the air currents were indeed stronger than down on the ground but they managed to get there easily.

Mei Chao Bing glanced at the town not far away, smiling faintly when he thought of his little bunny who was likely still practicing his sword arts and cultivation skills in the courtyard. Then, he reigned in his wandering thoughts and turned back to Song Mu, getting ready for another attempt.

“I don’t know if this will really work and what the consequences might be. Maybe I can indeed sense separate types of energy and maybe I can even take them in. It’s possible I won’t manage to convert it though which could result in issues on your end.”

Song Mu simply motioned for him to go ahead. He wasn’t worried. Naturally, he understood that there was a risk involved but … he was a cultivator. Their whole life was fraught with danger. Plus, in this case, he could literally help a friend and even the whole sect out. How could he hide because he was afraid for his own life?

Thinking about what was there to lose or not, he couldn’t help but give Mei Chao Bing a deep look. “Ah Bing.”

Mei Chao Bing raised his brows.

“If … And I’m only saying if, our side wins this fight and you make it out of this but I don’t … please go and tell my sister. I think she would appreciate hearing it from you instead of somebody else.”

Mei Chao Bing who had just wanted to try and separate the different types of energy that might be around them paused. Song Mu’s sister … he remembered her and he also knew how much she meant to him. Saying this now … well, it was indeed appropriate after he had just warned him but he hadn’t really thought of consequences that drastic. He had thought that there should be discomfort at most. Now that it was brought up though, it made him wonder about a few things.

He nodded absentmindedly and then tried to focus on the task at hand again. Closing his eyes, he heard the sounds of the spiritual energy around them, a faint jingling like the sound a wind chime might make. It was oddly appropriate at a place they had chosen for its connection to the wind.

He listened quietly, trying to distinguish anything different in there. There should be something like that. After all, when Yun Bei Fen’s third senior martial brother used his ability to check blue butterfly’s dreamscape, he had also found a different type of energy. Why shouldn’t it be the same here?

But then, he didn’t have an ability he could use and he wasn’t sure if his constitution would allow him to tell the difference. He knew very little about it after all and he had never consciously tried to use it. At this moment, he really would have benefited from having one of his senior martial brothers at his side.

Mei Chao Bing tried not to think about it, reminding himself of how Qu Yijun had dared to attack Shen Lei and the other disciples of their sect and how he had been when the two of them met in the underground palace that day. The way he seemed to look down on everyone … that was not a good person to ask any kind of advice from, much less any that was supposed to be used to help others.

He didn’t ponder further and instead focused on the here and now. Anyway, there was nobody to ask and he had long since relied on himself. He could do so in this situation as well. Not to mention that it wasn’t like he was completely alone. There was still Song Mu braving the currents with him, trying to come up with ideas on how to proceed.

He felt a bit better thinking of this and his tumultuous heart calmed down. He slowly sensed their surroundings, feeling that this spot was chosen well. On the ground, there were other people and despite how barren the border region was, there was still some vegetation left over and some small animals could be felt. All of that covered the ground in layers upon layers of spiritual energy which made it difficult to distinguish left from right.

Up here in the air, it was different though. There was an almost uniform amount of spiritual energy surrounding them, only occasionally interrupted by a bird passing by. Only some spots sounded slightly louder in his mind. Mei Chao Bing opened his eyes and realized that these were actually the clouds slowly traveling toward the south. It seemed like they held more energy than the clear sky. He couldn’t perceive a difference in kind though.

Mei Chao Bing hummed faintly. If there really was a different type of energy contained in nature, then it seemed like he was unable to sense it. Whether that was because it wasn’t dense enough in this place or because he wasn’t familiar enough with it, he couldn’t tell. Still, he felt somewhat disappointed thinking about how they hadn’t gotten even a single step closer.

Opposite him, Song Mu was waiting quietly but he watched Mei Chao Bing’s expression. Seeing his tightly furrowed brows, he could imagine what was going on. “No luck? Don’t worry. Maybe it just needs some time or maybe we just need to go about this from another direction. Let’s not give up yet.”

Mei Chao Bing nodded but he still felt uncomfortable in his heart. If he couldn’t do it … what would the consequences be? Not even mentioning what he intended to do before the other side could get active but if his Master really managed to get his hands on Yun Bei Fen and then he couldn’t give him what he wanted in exchange … What would happen at that time?
