The two of them soon arrived at the courtyard where Yun Bei Fen was still diligently training his newfound knowledge.

Song Mu raised his brows, not sure what to think. Mei Chao Bing had come to him to test his constitution and what effects it might have so he wouldn’t accidentally injure Yun Bei Fen. So how come they were now back here?

Even though he wasn’t sure what Mei Chao Bing’s intentions were, he didn’t say anything and just waited quietly. Anyway, all of these decisions were up to his friend. At most, he could make a few suggestions and hope that they were worthwhile.

In fact, Mei Chao Bing hadn’t come here for Yun Bei Fen. He naturally took a glance at him when they entered and smiled to himself but his true goal was the person resting on the other side. Or, well, currently, he wasn’t in the shape of a person. “Da Hei. I want to ask for a favor.”

The midnight wolf lazily raised his head, giving Mei Chao Bing an odd look. Asking for a favor? He was already his contracted spirit beast. What favors were there left to ask for?

Mei Chao Bing smiled wryly. “Well, it’s like this …” He gave him a rundown of what they had found out about his constitution and then coughed faintly. “I don’t actually know how to use it but learning now should come in handy. I was thinking … the spiritual energy that is assimilated by human cultivators and the one that is absorbed by spiritual beasts should be different. So testing it with you should make it easier to see a change. Would you be willing to give this a try?”

Da Hei stared at him for a moment and finally got up, turning from his wolf-shape to that of a man. “What exactly would testing entail?” His expression didn’t indicate what he thought of the suggestion at all.

Mei Chao Bing smiled wryly. “I just want to see if I can pass energy to you that you can use. Of course, there is a chance this will go wrong which is dangerous. Thus, I will only do this if you’re alright with it. I know you’re already bound to me but don’t feel pressured. I can think of something else if it’s not alright with you.”

Da Hei hummed. By now, he had been following Mei Chao Bing for a few weeks so he had naturally gained a rough understanding of what type of person he was. In his impression, Mei Chao Bing was rather trustworthy. If he said he would only try if he gave his okay, then that was the case. Of course, it was obvious that he was anxious to solve this matter.

He glanced at the youth that was still seriously practicing his skills and finally sighed. “If I don’t do it, how are you going to find a better opportunity that easily? Anyway, how much do you know about the way spirit beasts cultivate?” He turned back to Mei Chao Bing, his gaze inquisitive. Usually, humans weren’t that knowledgeable about the matters of their spirit beast people. It was already good if they respected them as people.

Mei Chao Bing could only smile wryly. “I’m afraid not much. As far as I know, the general principle is the same as it is for humans: You take in spiritual energy, convert it, and store it in your body in a compressed form. When necessary, it will be released.”

Da Hei nodded. “Not wrong.”

“The difference should lie in the way the energy is converted. Usually, for humans, we circulate it in our bodies along the spirit veins and acupoints. For spirit beasts, the way those are distributed should differ so that might have an influence on the resulting energy.”

This time, Da Hei gave a hum in response but it was hard to say whether he agreed or not.

Mei Chao Bing could only faintly raise his brows. “Is this wrong?”

Da Hei turned to the side, reached down, and picked up the small bunny that had been waiting next to him. Poking its forehead, he gave Mei Chao Bing a look. “You’re forgetting that we have a beast core. This is naturally part of our bodies when we are born while humans need to cultivate a spot to store the spiritual energy they take in. For us, simply guiding the energy to this core and then circulating it inside is enough. This is why a spirit beast will always try to protect that core even more than any of their vitals.”

Mei Chao Bing furrowed his brows. Right, a spirit beast with an injured beast core would likely lose all cultivation. If this was where the energy was stored though … “That means testing this would be even more dangerous to you than it would be to a human, right?” After all, as a human, you could rebuild your cultivation if you absolutely had to. But it sounded like that wouldn’t be possible for spirit beasts at all.

Da Hei lightly brushed through Xiao Hui’s fur, his gaze thoughtful. The fact that Mei Chao Bing had caught on this fast and now looked reluctant to try meant quite a bit to him. Furthermore … “I have been stuck at nascent soul level for a long time. This test you are proposing … if I’m not wrong, it could also help me to upgrade, couldn’t it?

“I’d very much like reaching a higher level in this life.” In fact, he yearned for that because only if you were strong, you could live your life to the fullest in this world. Thus, if there was an opportunity like that, he wouldn’t simply pass up on it. A bit of danger was to be expected and he wouldn’t complain even if he lost his cultivation in the process. If it wasn’t meant to be, then he’d rather end it sooner instead of dragging out an existence that couldn’t have any freedom.
