Mei Chao Bing furrowed his brows tightly. There was nothing he had to do specifically. If this was indeed the case, then this shouldn’t require conscious effort. At the same time, there could also be requirements that had to be met for the constitution to activate. For example, he had heard of constitutions that only came into play in a life-or-death situation. He didn’t think this should be the case for his own but … there could be other conditions that had to be met.

Song Mu next to him watched his expression, realizing that Mei Chao Bing still seemed to have trouble figuring this out. “What are you thinking?”

Mei Chao Bing clicked his tongue. “I just feel uncertain. If it is as Da Hei said and I can just … do this the same way I would usually cultivate but there is nothing more to it, then why am I so important to my Master’s plan? If he simply wants to use me to channel energy to strengthen the elite of the demonic practitioners, then he could just use energy-gathering arrays to redirect the energy to their headquarters and have the disciples gather there.

“He doesn’t actually need me unless I can somehow speed up the process or otherwise assist in a way an array can’t. And I currently can’t see how. I mean, me processing the energy before letting you take it in didn’t noticeably change the energy and certainly didn’t speed the process up.”

Song Mu hummed. This was indeed the case. “Maybe the effect of the constitution only becomes obvious when there is more energy to take in. Have you ever been in a situation where you had to try that?”

Mei Chao Bing shook his head. “No, I’ve always been careful about that.” Spiritual energy was necessary for cultivators to advance through the ranks and finally ascend but taking in too much of it could damage your spirit veins or even your dantian. He would never risk that. That was especially true right now when being available to fight was so immensely important. Thus, he couldn’t even give it a try. The risk of injuring himself was much too high. In the worst case, he might even slip back a level. How was he supposed to confront his Master then? The bigger the gap between their cultivation, the less he would be able to do anything to thwart his plans.

Da Hei looked from one person to another and then narrowed his eyes. “Didn’t you guess earlier that your Master might want to use the energy from the southern chasm? If that is really the case, it might indeed be true that your constitution is needed. The energy there is suffused with that of vengeful spirits, after all.”

Song Mu’s eyes lit up when he heard that. “Yes, maybe it is not so much that your constitution works differently from how other cultivators do it. Maybe the essence of it is in how you are able to do it with a wider arrangement of energies. In fact, seeing as we don’t know much about other energies, it is entirely possible that there would be benefits in using a different kind to cultivate.”

Mei Chao Bing furrowed his brows. In fact, this would make a lot of sense. “I never tried that either so it’s difficult to say but it might be possible. The only problem would be the scale. Unless that energy behaves completely different from regular spiritual energy, I likely won’t be able to take in much and it seems like I need to circulate it to turn it into something other cultivators could use.”

Da Hei tapped the ground next to him, his expression thoughtful. “Unless you haven’t clearly figured out how your constitution works. What you’re thinking of doing is regular cultivation with a different kind of energy. If it was really like that, do you think anyone would have bothered killing off the Lin family?”

Mei Chao Bing raised his brows. “What do you mean?”

Da Hei hadn’t really participated in the previous talks but since he was supposed to guard Yun Bei Fen, he was usually around and able to listen in. Thus, he was aware of what they had figured out so far. And, of course, he had his own thoughts on this even if he hadn’t said so previously. “The Lin family was killed up to the last member. That somebody slipped through was likely a coincidence. Why do you think this happened? Most likely, they were in somebody’s way or somebody suspected they would soon be.

“Just think about it: A family able to use any and all kinds of energy to cultivate. Every single member of their clan able to take in energy, convert it, and pass it on to somebody else. They can gather a lot of strength in a short amount of time and they are an incredibly useful partner to have. At the same time, they are a terrible enemy to have. And in the world of humans, is there really somebody without an enemy?”

Mei Chao Bing’s expression changed. Yes, just thinking back to his own past, he couldn’t in good conscience say that Da Hei was wrong. Back then, he had always tried to help the younger disciples but because of his talent, his Master’s urging, and maybe even this constitution of his, he had also attracted the jealousy of people like Yang Wu Huang. The Lin family likely hadn’t been any different.

Still, if they were just a little better than everyone else, nobody would have gone so far as to kill every single one of them. No, at most, they would have tried to suppress them in other ways. This forceful way of dealing with them … it was likely a sign of just how strong the ability of the Lin family had been.

Thinking of it that way though, he couldn’t help but doubt himself. “Maybe … I actually didn’t inherit much of the constitution either.” Otherwise, why had he never realized how awesome he apparently was?
