Da Hei and Song Mu both looked at him, doubt written on their faces. Clearly, his Master would have checked this. Otherwise, why take him in and train him when he was younger? And why not continue to take in further disciples after him? No, clearly, however much of the constitution Mei Chao Bing had inherited, it was enough to meet his Master’s needs.

Still, the constitution simply being there helped little if he had no idea how to make use of it. This way, they couldn’t prepare for when the time came to fight back against Feng Bai Xiao which meant one less option to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. How could they accept that?

Song Mu furrowed his brows tightly. “I doubt that it’s that. I truly think this should be about the type of energy or the amount. Are you sure we can’t go to give it a try? The southern chasm is a little far away but we could theoretically go there and be back in two days at most if we travel at the fastest speed.”

Before, whether it was Mei Chao Bing or Zhi Guan, they had both used Blue Butterfly’s dreamscape to travel to the southern chasm. Thus, the time it took to get there had been drastically reduced. If they wanted to make this journey without her, it would indeed take them more than half a day, plus the time to actually give their theory a try.

Mei Chao Bing hesitated because of this very fact. Figuring this out was important but time was pressing. Could he really rush there just to experiment with this? It seemed a bit risky. Also, what if it didn’t work? Then he would have wasted time and energy but got nothing in return. They wouldn’t be a single step closer to dealing with his Master and instead, they would have wasted valuable time on something useless. If they didn’t try though, he wouldn’t know how else to go about this.

Meanwhile, Da Hei pursed his lips. He pondered for a moment and finally looked over his shoulder. His gaze followed Yun Bei Fen as he practiced his spiritual attacks which still didn’t look much better than before. If he wasn’t completely wrong …

He got to his feet and walked over, finally stopping next to Yun Bei Fen.

The person in question didn’t realize it at first and then looked up at him with a puzzled expression. This … Who was this person? He felt a bit doubtful and looked around, his gaze staying on Mei Chao Bing who was watching the two of them. He didn’t seem worried, only curious, so Yun Bei Fen turned back.

Da Hei motioned at his bag. “You give me your sword. The one your first senior martial brother forged for you.”

Yun Bei Fen still felt odd but took it out and handed it to Da Hei.

The spirit beast nodded and walked back to Mei Chao Bing without another word, handing it over.

Mei Chao Bing raised his brows. For a moment, he still didn’t understand what he meant but then, he focused on the blade of the sword. It emanated a faint chill which wasn’t an inherent ability of the weapon but instead something that was caused by the place it had come from: This was the faintest trace left over from the vengeful spirits in the southern chasm. Over time, it would dissipate but it had only been a few days since Zhi Guan brought this back so it could still be felt.

Seeing what they had talked about, Mei Chao Bing realized what Da Hei meant. “You want me to take in that shred of energy and see what happens.”

Da Hei inclined his head. “If you are able to use that to cultivate, then you know for sure. If you can’t …” He tilted his head and raised his brows. “Well, then you’ll have a problem.”

Regular cultivators couldn’t deal with vengeful energy. There was a certain type of ghost cultivator who could but those were rare and they required a special constitution of their own to allow for this. Mei Chao Bing didn’t have such a constitution so if he was able to make use of this energy, then that meant that his own constitution could indeed convert the energy into a different type. The final puzzle would be solved and he could rest easy. If he couldn’t though … chances were he would go crazy.

If vengeful energy invaded the body, it would find any kind of weakness it could and drill deeper inside. Then, it would start to taint the spiritual energy in your body and likely give you an inner demon, affecting your cultivation either immediately in the form of a qi deviation or biding its time until you were weak.

Most often, cultivators this happened to would become increasingly paranoid, their mental state deteriorating before even half of their energy had been infected. The worst part was that they didn’t realize this because the changes were small at first.

In his case, he could check directly and would likely be able to tell but there was still the danger of missing any signs. In that way, even if they managed to survive the upcoming fight, he might be ruining his prospects. If he didn’t try though …

Mei Chao Bing sighed. Anyway, he was ready to take his own life should worse come to worst. What was a bit of insanity compared to that? Not to mention that there were options to deal with vengeful energy. Yes, that might mean abolishing his cultivation and starting over but as long as his Master was defeated, he was willing to try that. Anyway, he had succeeded once so he could do it a second time. Right now wasn’t the time to be faint-hearted.

Making up his mind, Mei Chao Bing finally closed his eyes and then started to take in the remaining trace of vengeful energy on Yun Bei Fen’s sword, waiting for what would happen as it entered his body.
