Receiving the resources from Elder Xing, Mei Chao Bing thanked him before glancing at the others. Right now, they really needed to gather the rest of the ingredients and test out their guess. He did realize that this left all the work regarding those traces to the others though. With several of the older disciples gone at the moment, that really wasn’t good.

His expression turned complicated as he turned back to Elder Xing. “I’m afraid we won’t be able to help with the patrols right now but we will come back as soon as we finish this test and report to you so we can support the others.”

Elder Xing simply waved. “Don’t worry about it. Everyone has their own tasks at this moment. For you, it is definitely preparing for what lies ahead. I’ll go and talk things over with Elder Baili and come up with a way to deal with the current issue. You really don’t need to think about it. Sometimes, it’s best if everyone worries about their own issues.”

Mei Chao Bing still felt bad but nodded despite that. Well, he couldn’t do anything and if the Elder already said so, then what else could he do? He hurriedly bid farewell and then went around to ask the remaining disciples whether they had anything to spare.

By the time they had made one round through the town, they had managed to gather enough to give their theory one try. It couldn’t be used for more though. His limit for taking in spiritual energy was simply too high at his current level.

Mei Chao Bing sighed when he realized this but there was no way to change this now so they could only go ahead. “Let’s return to the hill where we tried before. We can use the spot on the far side.”

Song Mu nodded while Da Hei just quietly followed them. Anyway, the midnight wolf had few thoughts on the matter seeing as it didn’t seem to concern him much.

The three of them didn’t lose any time and returned to the hill, walking around it so there would be one more safety measure between them and the town. It might not make much of a difference with the amount of energy they were talking about but it was the best they could do right now.

Mei Chao Bing took a deep breath and then slowly exhaled. “Well, let’s put down some arrays to keep the energy inside in case the worst happens. Also, I need you to stand guard at the side.”

Song Mu inclined his head and directly started to draw an array.

Da Hei watched quietly and then glanced at Mei Chao Bing. “After taking in the energy, what do you intend to do? Raise your level?”

Mei Chao Bing who had also just wanted to start drawing an array raised his head. He couldn’t be completely sure but Da Hei’s voice had made it sound as if he didn’t think this was a good idea. He thought for a moment and then realized what he likely meant: Taking in energy for yourself was different from channeling it to distribute it to others. In one case, you needed to compress the energy to fit into your own dantian. In the other case, you only needed to lead it through your body and could then expunge it again, making it so your dantian wouldn’t have to bear as much pressure.

Nodding to himself, he realized that this truly wouldn’t allow him to accurately judge whether he was able to do as his Master would likely want him to act. It would be better to take in the energy and then transfer it to somebody else. As for who to give the energy to … He looked at the two people in front.

One of them had been his best friend until five years ago and even though they weren’t as close any longer, it seemed like this relationship might be repaired in the future as long as they continued on the path they had now stepped upon. Helping this person make some progress in his cultivation didn’t seem like a bad idea.

The other one was the spiritual beast he had personally signed a contract with and who he relied on to keep Yun Bei Fen safe while he wasn’t there. Even though Da Hei might not be the most enthusiastic, he had indeed helped him several times and a higher level would mean being able to help him more in the future.

Deciding who to use this opportunity on really wasn’t easy. They could both be trusted, would both benefit from this and would both bring advantages to the Teng Yong Sect. Nothing really spoke against either of them. In this case, how was he supposed to decide?

Song Mu had heard Da Hei’s question and just like Mei Chao Bing, he could also infer what the midnight wolf meant. He thought for a moment and then stopped drawing the array, walking over to the two of them instead. “Ah Bing, you transfer the energy to Da Hei.”

Mei Chao Bing raised his brows. There was no cultivator who wouldn’t want to raise their level whether they were human or a spiritual beast. Was Song Mu really willing to give up this opportunity?

Song Mu smiled in return. With the number of resources they had gathered, he knew that he could upgrade to the next level. But … “My level is lower than Da Hei’s. Even if you transfer the energy to me, I would at most catch up to him and even that isn’t a given.” He didn’t know how strong exactly Da Hei was but he was aware that he was somewhere in the upper nascent soul stage. How could he compare to that? “Since it’s like this, it’s better to let him use the energy to amass more energy. If he can get close to the peak of the nascent soul stage, it’ll be of great advantage to everyone. We might even be able to rely on him as the main force of the upcoming fight. You can’t let that opportunity pass by.”
