Da Hei saw Mei Chao Bing’s expression and smiled. If it was so easy to have somebody break through to the demigod stage, would his Master even need to try and come up with this kind of outrageous plan? No. He could just quietly cultivate by himself or hoodwink the sects into providing more resources and soon, he’d be halfway up to Heaven. Since that hadn’t happened, it spoke leagues about how difficult it actually was to reach that level.

Well, he still understood Mei Chao Bing’s mood though. He clearly cared about that little cultivator so seeing the possible danger he was in, he was naturally anxious for a solution. Thinking of this, he softened his expression by a point. “I’m not that far off. If things get dangerous, there might be a possibility of breaking through to face the dangers.”

Mei Chao Bing furrowed his brows in response. He knew what Da Hei meant but … breakthroughs were a troublesome matter. Sometimes, no matter how much energy you took in, you couldn’t advance. You needed the right insight to take that step forward on the road to Heaven. Other times, the insight might be there but the energy wasn’t sufficient.

This gap could be bridged if you were in danger as long as your potential was stimulated to the maximum amount but it would leave your new realm somewhat unstable. While you could deal with that later by going into closed-door cultivation for a stretch of time and consolidating your realm step by step, that took time. If you didn’t have that time … it meant that your strength at first couldn’t quite keep up with a person who had reached the realm with their energy and insight both at an even level.

So overall, Da Hei still being in the late stage of the nascent soul realm and needing to rely on luck to advance to the demigod stage seemed much too risky. Who could say if there would be an opportunity? Who could say if it was enough to stimulate his potential? Who could say if his strength even after advancing could keep up with Feng Bai Xiao’s?

He didn’t have a definitive answer for any of these questions and he was terrified of what that might mean. If it was only his life, he might not care. He could release Da Hei from their contract and even have them leave. He’d be able to do that. But with Yun Bei Fen around?

Mei Chao Bing sighed deeply and rubbed his forehead. “I know you are trying to console me. I am just … I am afraid. You are right that I can’t do anything against my Master if I can’t follow his instructions when he asks me to use my constitution. I don’t know what to do.”

Da Hei hummed. “Then you’d better think about that.”

Don’t get him wrong. He wasn’t trying to sound callous. He simply didn’t have a solution either. Without being stronger than the other side, there wasn’t much they could do. All the preparations they had done so far could only amount to child’s play if the strength of the other side was far ahead. If not … well, then what reason was there to worry?

It was a pity that they didn’t know yet what exactly awaited them and had no way to plan. It didn’t help that they would be fighting this battle in a place chosen by the other side, under terms that had long been prepared by Mei Chao Bing’s Master. For the most part, they could only react instead of taking the initiative and everybody knew that this was a big disadvantage when it came to fights.

Mei Chao Bing gave him a look but finally just nodded. He also understood that Da Hei couldn’t help much. He had already done a lot with the ideas he had provided while they were checking his constitution. He couldn’t expect him to solve all his problems for him. No, this was his issue so he also needed to solve it.

Song Mu had been quietly listening all this time. Now that the other two both fell silent, he reached out and patted Mei Chao Bing’s shoulder. “It’s alright. Aren’t junior martial sister Liu and senior martial sister Xi going to come back soon? Let’s go back for now and wait for them. They might have more information on the other side’s plan now. That way, we will know what exactly to plan for.”

Mei Chao Bing hummed. “You’re right. Without knowing anything, it’s almost impossible to come up with countermeasures. I had just hoped that we could prepare a few ideas so time won’t be as tight. Who knows when my Master will make his move, after all?”

Song Mu naturally understood but this couldn’t be changed. “We did what we could. For now, we can only wait. Anyway, it shouldn’t take too long for them to return since it’s only about gathering information. They might be back soon.”

Mei Chao Bing nodded as they got to their feet. “I know. I suppose I might as well see how Fen’er is doing with his practice and give some more advice. As long as he can do a few more things, I’ll already feel calmer.”

Song Mu thought of Yun Bei Fen’s serious expression as he had been practicing his attacks and chuckled faintly. “Well, he seems to have made some progress at least. Although I’m afraid it’s going to be difficult to make much use of that when among demonic practitioners. Being able to use a skill while in a secure courtyard and doing so while surrounded by enemies in a chaotic situation are two very different things. If you want him to calmly face that, you might need to step up the training.”

Mei Chao Bing could only sigh. It wasn’t like he didn’t want to do that but … it also wasn’t easy. “I’ll try.” Saying this, he stepped into the courtyard only to freeze as soon as he saw it empty. “Fen’er?” His gaze brushed from one side to the other but he still couldn’t see his lover. Immediately, a bad feeling gripped his heart.
