Mei Chao Bing might feel that it was odd but he didn’t dwell on it either. Anyway, if this Elder Lei taught him slowly, it was for the best. This way, maybe the others would have the time to find a way to solve the situation from outside. It wasn’t likely but his own hands were bound so he could only hope for the best.

He put the first stone on the ground to have his hands free again and then took the second stone from Lei Chen. Absorbing the spiritual energy from it, he circulated it once and then transferred it to the Elder. There was no difference to what he had done with the first stone and he hadn’t felt a difference in the energy itself either. It was truly just repeating the previous step which seemed a bit pointless.

When he finished, Mei Chao Bing put the second stone back and looked at Lei Chen, not sure what to expect. Would it just be another stone? Would they at least upgrade in size? Or could it be he was overlooking something here?

Lei Chen indeed pulled out a third stone which didn’t look different from the first two. This time, he didn’t hand it over though and simply kept it in his hand, looking at Mei Chao Bing quietly.

Mei Chao Bing raised his brows. What did he mean?

“Continue.”

The Elder’s voice sounded faintly like flowing water but Mei Chao Bing narrowed his eyes. Just now, that man hadn’t moved his lips at all. That was to say his voice had been projected with spiritual energy. This was definitely out of the ordinary.

Mei Chao Bing didn’t say anything and simply raised a hand, absorbing the energy from the stone at a slight distance, circulating it once, and then transferring it to Lei Chen again. His mind continued to churn though.

He had been thinking all this time that this Elder Lei was odd just based on having the status of an Elder while his cultivation base was only at the foundation establishment stage. Now, he felt even more that this had been the case. Using one’s spiritual energy to communicate might not sound difficult but that was only when talking about communicating mentally. Yes, even a disciple in the qi gathering stage could easily use their spiritual energy to transmit a message to somebody else this way. But projecting your actual voice outside? That was a different matter altogether.

Mei Chao Bing had never tried this himself but he was knowledgeable enough to be able to understand how it was done. In short, you used the energy to disturb the air around you, creating sound waves that would be interpreted as a voice by others. To do so, your grasp on your spiritual energy had to be incredibly fine though. Otherwise, could you really influence the air to the point where you were able to have your voice sound both human and intelligible? This certainly wasn’t easy.

Thinking back on his own journey as a cultivator, he felt that he definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it just after establishing his foundation. No, even at the golden core stage, it might have been difficult. Now, that he was a nascent soul stage cultivator, he felt like he should be able to do it but he’d still need a lot of practice first. After all, knowing the principle and being able to follow through in practice were not the same. It would need quite some trial and error to get it right.

While he tried to imagine how this was done, Lei Chen had taken out another stone. This time, the energy around it was slightly different. It wasn’t the simple spiritual energy that you would encounter while out in nature. Instead, there seemed to be a sharp edge to it.

Mei Chao Bing narrowed his eyes. This felt a bit like the energy of a sword cultivator. Most likely, this stone had been taken from a place where a fierce fight had happened. The energy had somehow seeped into the stone during that time or maybe later after the energy still didn’t want to dissipate. Well, it mattered little. He simply absorbed the energy again, this time not even bothering to raise a hand, before circulating and then transferring it. His mind still stayed on the previous issue during all of that.

With how difficult this kind of operation was, no cultivator irrespective of their level would project their voice with their spiritual energy. They would either speak normally or — if they couldn’t be bothered to — they would use their spiritual energy to transmit the message inwardly to the other person. Everything else was a waste of time and energy. If somebody still did … there had to be a reason.

Most likely, this Elder Lei wasn’t physically able to speak. Whether that was because he had been born that way or if this was the result of an injury was tough to say with no further clues. The fact that he could do something this difficult at his level combined with his status suggested that it might be the latter though. Yes, he should have originally been one of the elites of the Wu Yun Sect but had then fallen to this level because of a fight or accident, sustaining grievous physical injuries at the same time.

Even though he had managed to figure this out, it mattered little to Mei Chao Bing. This might give him a little insight into who he was dealing with but he could hardly come up with a new plan just based on this. Especially so since he couldn’t go to investigate further based on this. In the end, he could only continue to follow the mind-numbing training that Lei Chen had come up with, trying to figure out how exactly the constitution of the Lin family worked. Well, on that front, he also didn’t seem to be making much progress.
