The two Elders of the Zhen Yan Sect made their way over to Elder Fa’s tent. It actually wasn’t far from Elder Ximen’s tent, both being located further in the middle of the camp so they could react just as fast no matter which direction something happened in.

Fa Ai Jun nodded at the two disciples at the entrance and couldn’t help but stop. “Did somebody come by?” This was still what bothered her the most. The Zhen Yan Sect had sent quite a lot of disciples to the border region to guarantee everyone’s safety and they had even sent further support after the first clues were found. Still, there weren’t so many people that the disciples wouldn’t recognize one another. Even if the demonic faction somehow got a hold of their sect robes and marched in here, the unfamiliar faces would have drawn attention. There was no way they could sneak up and into her tent or get close to her person without anyone noticing.

To her surprise, the two disciples shook their heads though. “No, nobody came by, Elder Fa.”

The two Elders exchanged a glance. This was indeed something that could only be classified as odd.

Ximen Chang didn’t know the full story but clearly, from what Fa Ai Jun had said earlier and now this question, she had only received a message and not seen anyone. Neither had these disciples which only seemed to make it likelier for this to be an ambush.

He didn’t say anything and simply gave Fa Ai Jun a glance. If this truly was what they thought it was … it was best to tread cautiously. In the best case, they could make use of the fact that they had found out early, pretend they weren’t aware, and then catch the other side unawares. That way, even if there were more people on the demonic side or the opponents were especially strong, they had a chance of winning.

Elder Fa nodded imperceptibly and then walked ahead, opening the flap of the tent and stepping inside while Ximen Chang stayed a step back to launch a surprise attack if necessary.

Inside the tent, Luo Lin and Shen Lei had heard Elder Fa’s voice outside so they revealed their figures, not suspecting in the least that they might be suspected because of the odd way they had delivered their message.

As soon as Ximen Chang saw Luo Lin’s face … he drew his sword and attacked.

Shen Lei immediately pulled his lover out of harm’s way, drawing his own weapon and looking at the two Elders vigilantly. He recognized Elder Fa from intersect competitions and he had also seen Elder Ximen before. To suddenly be attacked by these two … he had a hard time dealing with this. At once, he couldn’t help but wonder if these were actually demonic practitioners who had taken on their appearance.

“Stop!” Fa Ai Jun hastily reached out to stop Ximen Chang from attacking further. She actually didn’t recognize Luo Lin either but she knew that she had seen Shen Lei before. Staring at him for a moment and narrowing her eyes, she finally seemed to come up with something. “Disciple … Shen?”

Shen Lei nodded and slowly lowered the sword he was holding. “Yes, Shen Lei from the Teng Yong Sect.”

Ximen Chang glanced at Fa Ai Jun and then lowered his weapon as well when he saw her nod. After thinking for a moment, he even sheathed the weapon again. Apparently, these two were indeed only disciples of the Teng Yong Sect even though one of them did look a bit like a demonic practitioner.

He glanced at Luo Lin and finally couldn’t help but give Shen Lei a questioning look. “So … who is this then?” Even disregarding his looks, it seemed like Fa Ai Jun didn’t recognize him. They couldn’t completely let down their guard since that was the case.

Shen Lei’s lips twitched. He could actually guess what was going through Elder Ximen’s head. He had seen people react oddly to Luo Lin more than once, after all. Thinking of this, he finally sheathed his weapon as well but felt a little disgruntled. “That’s my fiance, Luo Lin. He is also a disciple of the Teng Yong Sect.” He only added the latter sentence in case that guy made up a story about how he fell for a demonic practitioner despite being from the righteous side.

Thankfully, Ximen Chang’s imagination wasn’t that overactive either. He had originally attacked because he half-expected an ambush and then drew conclusions simply based on Luo Lin’s looks. But … well, they also had pretty disciples on their righteous side. Just because somebody looked good, that didn’t mean they were a bad person, did it?

He coughed lightly, now feeling embarrassed, and nodded at the two disciples. “I hope the two of you don’t blame me for just now. We have a bit of an odd situation on our hands right now.”

Elder Fa next to him nodded. “Indeed. But it seems like you brought news from the Teng Yong Sect. Why don’t we sit down and talk about both slowly? I also think your sect should be informed about what we found.” She didn’t ask about the message, feeling that there was likely more to that and that they might not want to expose it in front of others. Even though she did trust Ximen Chang, she also knew that if it wasn’t Mei Chao Bing, these disciples might not trust her all that much either. In fact, it might only be thanks to that little ice cube that they even came to her directly.

Shen Lei nodded, not wanting to make a big issue out of it either. The situation they had created was odd and so was what they had heard a little about earlier as well. That was indeed something to talk about. Thus, he gently pulled his lover to sit, waiting for the Elders to take the lead.
