Well, no matter what the reason was, the fact remained that people in the past had been stronger than them so if they could hardly deal with that person, then his Master was right to worry about how strong they would be. Maybe even he who had clearly reached the demigod stage could be easily defeated. There was really no way to know beforehand.

For one, they didn’t know that person’s original level. It should be higher than the demigod stage they knew of but how high, that was difficult to estimate. In the past, the four founders should all have been at roughly the level his Master was at now and they had needed the help of their disciples and all other sects to contend against that person. Even though that fight and the subsequent time in the array should have weakened them, it was tough to estimate by how much. After all, that person didn’t seem to use the same type of energy as them. How could you quantify that?

Mei Chao Bing actually relaxed a little when his thoughts reached this point. Simply knowing that there was someone in this world who could give his Master pause was a good feeling at this moment when he was completely at his mercy. He knew that person was unlikely to be on their side but … it at least was proof that his Master wasn’t unbeatable. He had to hold onto that and draw some strength from it.

He only allowed himself a moment before he tensed again and focused on the task Lei Chen had given him. He couldn’t let either of these catch on or Fen’er would suffer for it. Naturally, he didn’t want to see that.

By now, Lei Chen had started to arrange several small pieces of stone, drawing them closer and closer together while asking him to only take in the energy from one of them before transforming and finally transmitting it. Even though Mei Chao Bing hadn’t thought it would make a difference, he had to admit that he could tell the stones steeped in the energy from the chasm easily apart from regular ones and didn’t even have much difficulty distinguishing between where one of them ended and the next began.

Of course, the former wasn’t difficult. This energy was very distinctive, after all. The latter required more skill, especially with a spiritual sense like his which transmitted everything back to him as a sound. The smaller the distance between them, the easier it was to mistake the exact place. Of course, he had been honing his spiritual sense for more than two decades so he had become more familiar with it step by step. By now, it really wasn’t that difficult anymore to distinguish a distance or different kinds of energies. He had never needed to be this precise though. Admittedly, it was a bit more difficult than he would have thought when neither distance nor type were all that far apart.

Feeling that he had roughly figured out why his Master insisted on his taking in that person’s energy instead of that from the array, he didn’t ponder the issue any further. Right now, he couldn’t do anything. If he were to get a chance, it should be when they truly went to the southern chasm and he was told to start transmitting the energy. He didn’t know what he could do yet but any opportunity had to present itself during that time.

Maybe he could make it seem like he got the source of the energy wrong and take some in from the surrounding area so as to disturb the array and wake the person up before his Master was ready? Then maybe these two would come to blows and kill each other or maybe his Master would be killed and the other person would be gravely injured. At that time, while things would still be dangerous, he could give the magical box a try that Yun Bei Fen’s second senior martial brother had created.

Mei Chao Bing couldn’t say if this plan was feasible. Admittedly, there were a few issues: For one, Yun Bei Fen was still being held captive. If his Master figured anything out, he’d hurt him for sure and he couldn’t let that happen. Thus, if he were to disturb the array, it had to be quick. Whether that would be enough … he couldn’t say for sure. Even if he did pull it off though, a fight between such powerhouses would be devastating to the area around them. At that time, he’d have to grab Fen’er and hightail out of there. The prerequisite for that was that the array keeping him captive collapsed which might happen when his Master was in dire straits but by then, it might already be too late. The risk was definitely high.

Of course, apart from that, there was also that Elder Lei. He was an existence that Mei Chao Bing still didn’t know how to explain. His level was low but his skills didn’t seem bad. He was likely a talent but had encountered an accident that caused him to regress in his cultivation. This made his abilities difficult to judge.

On the one hand, a lower level would always be suppressed by a higher cultivation base to a certain degree. Between someone in the foundation-building stage and someone in the nascent soul stage was a gulf that should make it easy to deal with the former.

But knowledge was a weapon in the world of cultivation and Mei Chao Bing admittedly didn’t know whether he could measure up in this regard. He had learned a lot from his Master and had gone out on many missions in the past but he had stopped learning as much in the last five years and he was only twenty-eight as well. Compared to someone who might be of an older generation … he didn’t dare to assume that he had the upper hand in that regard.

Of course, apart from that, the resources one had amassed played a part as well and in this part of the equation, he would absolutely lose. So really, his chances of winning against this Lei Chen didn’t seem to be as good in reality as they should have been based on their respective level.
