He wasn’t sure if he should expect a response. Even if he got one, could it be trusted? And even if it could be … would it be the one he wanted to hear? One that included that Yun Bei Fen was still alright and that there was some type of explanation for this?

Mei Chao Bing pressed the person even tighter against his chest. He had realized just how evil his Master was when he saw Elder Wu’s lifeless body back then. Since then, there had never been the slightest illusion that Feng Bai Xiao would spare anyone. No, this man was rotten to the core and would do whatever it took to reach his goals. The only reason he had assumed that he wouldn’t do anything to Yun Bei Fen was that he still needed him alive. He had to continue believing in that until there was no other way.

Feng Bai Xiao seemed willing to humor him this time. He raised his hand, exposing a small crystal that shimmered in the faint light of Mei Chao Bing’s spiritual energy. “Call it … making things easier on us. It’s so difficult to drag two people around. Why waste the energy? I’ll just take this.”

Mei Chao Bing stared at the crystal but his Master might as well have said nothing. He had no idea what it was. The way it glinted in the light seemed ominous though or maybe anything would have had that type of feeling to him right now.

His hands trembled but he forced himself to try and stay calm. “What is that?” If his Master wanted him to do anything else, then he’d better tell him what exactly was going on. Otherwise … he wouldn’t let him get away with this. If Yun Bei Fen was gone … he might as well take out that magical box even if it might mean blowing up the whole underground palace and the two of them along with it.

Feng Bai Xiao gave Mei Chao Bing a look that was hard to decipher. He might have been looking down on him for not knowing this or maybe seeing him so emotional made him think that he was weak. Either way, his thoughts likely weren’t good.

Just like before, Lei Chen was the one who turned to Mei Chao Bing and took over to answer his questions, the projected voice seeming even odder in the dimly lit hall. “That crystal contains his soul. Losing it for a while won’t harm him and it can be retrieved later to be reinserted into his body. The only prerequisite is that the crystal stays intact. If it cracks, the soul will be lost.”

Mei Chao Bing turned to look at him, his gaze incredulous. Just what was he talking about? Why was this … why was this happening? Yun Bei Fen hadn’t made any trouble and he himself also hadn’t done much to oppose his Master. At most, he had asked a few questions to get a better understanding of the situation and tried to figure out what these two were actually up to. But that was hardly anything. Was that really bad enough to do … this?

He furrowed his brows and lowered his head, looking at Yun Bei Fen’s face that seemed frozen in the moment when his Master had attacked him out of nowhere. Clearly, he hadn’t seen it coming and hadn’t understood what was going on. And now, he was like this, with no way to tell when he could return to normal.

Mei Chao Bing stared at him in a daze. All of this was his fault. If not for him falling in love with Yun Bei Fen, waiting for those five years to finally be with him, and even making it public in front of everyone … maybe he wouldn’t have been targeted. He wouldn’t be in this type of danger, threatened to even lose his soul. Since he claimed to love him, he should have stayed away from him. Ever indulging in this had been the most selfish decision of his life. It was just … that he couldn’t change it any longer.

Mei Chao Bing tightly pressed his eyes shut and hugged the person tightly before he raised his head to glare at his Master. “I won’t do anything before you don’t return his soul.”

Feng Bai Xiao looked at him with an insipid look. “Do you dare?”

“You did this to him. How can I believe that you will hand over the crystal later?”

“You will have to.” Feng Bai Xiao looked at the gem resting between his fingers as if pondering if he should just crush it directly. In the end though, he handed it over to Lei Chen. “Well, for the sake of not wasting any more time, I’ll give it to him. This should serve as enough of a reassurance, shouldn’t it?”

Mei Chao Bing naturally wasn’t happy with that. He wanted to see Yun Bei Fen move again. Otherwise, how could he rest assured?

Feng Bai Xiao huffed. “Don’t try to push your luck any further or I will break that crystal at once. Good luck retrieving his soul then. Now, let’s go to the southern chasm. Don’t waste more of my time.”

Mei Chao Bing glanced at Lei Chen. He didn’t know this person so he wasn’t all that reassured that he would actually give the crystal back but it did seem slightly better than to trust his Master’s words. Anyway, his Master was right: He hardly had a choice. He finally nodded and got to his feet, carefully cradling Yun Bei Fen’s motionless body and closing his eyes while he was at it. Doing so felt wrong but this was all he could do for the moment.

His Master threw him another glance. “Leave that here. It’ll only be a hindrance.”

This time, Mei Chao Bing didn’t intend to listen. He absolutely wouldn’t leave Yun Bei Fen’s body unprotected. Especially not in a place currently crawling with disciples of the demonic faction.

Feng Bai Xiao stared at him silently, his expression stormy.

Lei Chen glanced at the body and finally at the array on the ground before turning to Feng Bai Xiao. “Isn’t his first senior martial brother here? Just have him keep an eye on him.”

Feng Bai Xiao looked at him and finally nodded. “Very well.” Anyway, his own disciple was also here so he may as well have him get that first disciple of Baili Chao. As long as it didn’t interfere with their plan, all of it was alright.
