Looking at the bright side wasn’t easy under the current circumstances but he would take whatever he could get. When Mu Qing stepped inside, he didn’t need his Master to prompt him and walked over of his own volition. He carefully handed Yun Bei Fen’s body to a very puzzled Mu Qing.

The latter had figured that his Master would be there since the message told him to come here. He had even thought that maybe he knew that he had gotten in contact with Xi Ju Hai and the others. He hadn’t thought that he had already managed to grab his little junior though.

Seeing Mei Chao Bing now, he first felt surprised. Then, he felt deeply troubled, especially when he was handed a person.

Once upon a time, he had been in a similar position. One day, he suddenly found out about his Master’s true face, and between the moral pressure and some threats, he was forced to never return to the Teng Yong Sect, having to leave his fiancee, his little junior, and his friends behind.

He had always felt guilty toward these people. He had also felt regretful for his own sake. He hadn’t wanted to leave that life. If it was his choice, he would return and be with those he loved. But … he owed his Master too much and he couldn’t bring himself to go against him. He could only try to convince him again and again to turn over a new leaf, confess his sins, and return to the sect together. Of course, he had only been punished in return and never received the opportunity to do as he wished.

He had hated it and he had often asked himself what he was continuing all of this for. It seemed so much easier to give up but he had forced himself to walk forward, to take one step at a time in the hope that things would somehow turn around. Unfortunately, they never had.

Now, it seemed like his little junior was in a very similar situation. He was alone in a stronghold full of demonic practitioners, his level not high enough to contend against their Master. And obviously, there was also a person he cared so much about that he was easily manipulated through them.

Mu Qing looked at the slender figure in his arms, his brows furrowing. He wasn’t familiar with Yun Bei Fen. He had left the Teng Yong Sect several years before his Master’s treason was discovered. At that time, Yun Bei Fen had still been very young. By now, he had grown to be twenty years and even though he overall resembled his features as a child, Mu Qing really couldn’t tell who exactly this was. He only knew through his Master and some of the tasks he had been given before that his little junior actually had a lover he was very serious about.

Holding the person, it was obvious that Yun Bei Fen wasn’t awake. He wasn’t sure what had happened but Mei Chao Bing’s expression was grave so it couldn’t be anything good.

Mu Qing sighed and finally looked up at Mei Chao Bing again. “I will guard him well, don’t worry.”

Mei Chao Bing inclined his head. “I trust you.” Yes, no matter what had happened in the past, he did trust him. Mu Qing was different from Qu Yijun. Even though he had followed their Master, his reasons were certainly different. Especially in the current situation, Mei Chao Bing respected the choice Mu Qing had made. After all, wasn’t he also willing to do anything to save Yun Bei Fen? Clearly, there were sometimes things you would do even if they were against your conscience because something else was more important. If he could allow himself to do that, he’d be a hypocrite if he looked down on Mu Qing for doing the same.

The two of them exchanged a look but neither of them said another word. Anyway, what was there left to say? This wasn’t the kind of reunion they would have wished for. There was no time to speak, no happy feelings. Both of them were only left with worry for the future, a future they might actually never get to see.

Mei Chao Bing took another glance at Yun Bei Fen in Mu Qing’s arms and gently combed through his hair with his fingertips. Leaning down and kissing his forehead, he couldn’t help but quietly ask him to wait for his return.

He didn’t dare to even think that he wouldn’t manage to do so. No, he would only allow one outcome and that was his returning to this underground palace with the crystal containing Yun Bei Fen’s soul in hand, and saving his fiance. Nothing was allowed to go wrong. No matter what crimes he had to commit to do this, he wouldn’t hesitate.

Finally, Mei Chao Bing turned around and walked away. He didn’t dare to look again. If he did and lost his bearing, it would only be more difficult to see this through. His Master was tricky to deal with and even though that Elder Lei had seemed more amicable so far since he at least bothered to explain things to him, Mei Chao Bing wasn’t so stupid to think he could actually trust that person. No, he had to guard against him just as much as he had to guard against his Master.

Feng Bai Xiao was tired of waiting. Seeing that his youngest disciple had finally dealt with saying his farewell, he directly led the way to the other portal they had created.

Mei Chao Bing raised his brows when he saw that this one was actually hidden behind one of the murals. Apparently, they hadn’t investigated this place thoroughly enough. But, well, this was at least proof that much of what they had found was only a smokescreen for something else. Not that it mattered now when everything seemed to be too late already.
