Mei Chao Bing didn’t say anything and simply stepped through the portal behind his Master while Lei Chen brought up the rear. On the other side was a cavern with a cultivation platform right in front of where they stepped outside. He glanced at it and his gaze drifted through the place, taking in signs of an array on the ground around the platform and another one close to where the entrance was. Below the top of the cavern hung a night pearl. Currently, it was morning and enough light fell in from outside but at night, this could light up the place.

Judging by these things, this cavern should usually be used for closed-door cultivation. Since they were on their way to the southern chasm, it couldn’t be in the border region though. No, this ought to be in the middle of the continent, somewhere on the land the four great righteous sects were overlooking. To put it simply: The demonic faction had infiltrated deeply into their territory without them knowing or even guessing that something was up.

Back when his Master betrayed the Teng Yong Sect, everyone had been surprised. For a while, the people close to Feng Bai Xiao had been suspected of being traitors as well. Since he wasn’t easy to get along with, this mostly went for his disciples but those senior and junior martial siblings who had learned under the same Master were suspected just the same. It was only after slowly investigating everything step by step that those doubts were put aside and peace was restored to the righteous faction.

Now, it seemed that they hadn’t investigated nearly deeply enough. The people who had seemed close to him on the surface hadn’t had anything wrong with them but those who evaded him might have been secretly in touch with him, helping him because they, too, were actually part of the demonic faction. They had failed to check everyone and finally, it had led to the current situation which they couldn’t escape from. The mistakes had already been made years ago. Now, they couldn’t be undone any longer.

Feng Bai Xiao didn’t wait for Mei Chao Bing to mourn the future that could have been. He walked past the cultivation platform and then out of the cave. He obviously didn’t think anyone would notice him here.

Mei Chao Bing followed quietly and looked around outside as well. Here … seemed to be the outskirts of the Zhen Yan Sect’s sect grounds. So it wasn’t just anywhere in the middle of the continent but actually part of one of the four great righteous sects. Realizing this made him feel even worse.

He wouldn’t believe that this was a random cave that just happened to be on the sect grounds. The demonic faction wouldn’t take that much of a risk No, most likely, this cavern was owned by one of the Elders of the Zhen Yan Sect who kept it precisely for the sake of this portal, allowing the demonic practitioners easy access to their side of the border.

He glanced at the outside of the cave but there were no distinctive marks that could tell him which Elder had been involved in this. He could only remember the spot where it could be found. If they somehow survived all of this, he’d come back and make sure that this was investigated thoroughly.

The southern chasm had received its name because it was located in the south of the continent but it was still quite a bit north of the Zhen Yan Sect’s sect grounds so they had to travel there. Feng Bai Xiao rose into the air without even bothering to take out a sword. This was probably one of the unique advantages of being in the demigod stage.

Mei Chao Bing could only step on his sword and follow him quietly. He didn’t forget to glance at the ground beneath when they had risen up a few meters, making sure that he remembered the layout of this place as another clue so he could find the cavern again.

He also glanced at Lei Chen to get a better grasp of his skills but was disappointed: The Elder of the demonic faction was using a spiritual tool to get around. It looked like an oversized pushan fan, complete with the woven pattern. Lei Chen sat in the middle of it and from what he could see, hardly any spiritual energy was needed to move this tool so it didn’t give him any insight at all.

Turning back to the front, Mei Chao Bing simply continued to follow his Master and soon, the southern chasm could be seen up front. Now, it wouldn’t be long until his Master’s plan would come to fruition and there really was nothing he could do about it.

He clenched his hands into fists but even if he had a rebellious spirit and would like nothing more than to try and risk it all in a final fight … that only was true when it came to his own life. The moment his Master grabbed Yun Bei Fen and then even took his soul from his body, he had lost the ability to resist. He just didn’t dare to do anything when he wasn’t sure if he could save Yun Bei Fen with those actions.

How strong was that crystal? If he accidentally hit it during the fight, was there a chance it would crack? Then what about the soul inside? Even if that didn’t happen and he managed to defeat both his Master and Lei Chen through some miracle, he wasn’t sure if he could return this soul to the body. In fact, the whole situation looked hopeless.

In the end, he simply closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and finally gave in to fate. Sometimes, you just couldn’t win, no matter how hard you tried. There would always be someone stronger, more intelligent, or simply more sinister than you who could use these as advantages and reach whatever goal they had while you could only watch on helplessly. Today, he had learned that final lesson from his Master.
