To jump from the late stage of Foundation Establishment to the Golden Core stage in a few hours, that would be unheard of when it came to regular cultivation. That would even be the case for somebody who regained a level they had already been at once. With this method though, it wasn’t a problem.

Looking at it from that perspective, it made sense why his Master and Lei Chen would come up with such a plan. Although then again, it did seem odd for someone who was already in the Demigod stage to bother with this. The energy he would need to actually ascend … it couldn’t compare at all with what someone in the Nascent Soul stage could support.

In fact, cultivating by himself might be faster for his Master, and even Lei Chen would stop having any advantage through this method by the time he caught up to his level. Mei Chao Bing couldn’t imagine how these two imagined things to go at that time but then, that wasn’t his problem to think about. He simply continued, waiting for them to give him new instructions when the time came.

The sunlight didn’t reach the bottom of the southern chasm so it was hard to tell time. Mei Chao Bing could only make a rough guess of how long they had been in there based on how many breaks he had to take. But then, even that wasn’t reliable because he didn’t know if he was slowly getting used to the feeling of that twisted energy and could hang on longer. It didn’t seem likely because he still instinctively wanted to recoil whenever he felt it but he had to keep his mind open.

Unbeknown to him, the sunlight outside already waned and things over in the border region had also slowly changed.

Song Mu and Tan Xin had finally made their way back to the town with the ingredients they had bought halfway through the day, rushing all the time. When they arrived, they saw the disciples of the Zhen Yan Sect that had gathered outside and were now resting up after their own travels.

Song Mu immediately heaved a sigh of relief. The plans they had made were partly so desperate because they only had a few people to work with. If the disciples of the Zhen Yan Sect were able to support them, they would have a lot more wiggle room to deal with everything. This really was a timely help.

Elder Fa and Elder Ximen were standing to the side, quietly talking. Seeing the two new arrivals, Fa Ai Jun nodded at them. She knew that Elder Baili had sent these two on an errand and what it entailed. Seeing them now, she immediately walked up to them. “Did you get what you were looking for?”

Song Mu had heard Tan Xin’s explanations but didn’t understand much about alchemy so he still looked at her to see how good they were actually doing.

Tan Xin hesitated for a moment but finally nodded. “Not exactly but it should be close enough.” She had bought more things just in case and seeing the people of the Zhen Yan Sect, she already felt a lot more secure. Their sect focused on healing and supportive spells so many of their disciples studied alchemy. Surely, there would be someone among them who could make a potion out of the ingredients she got even if she herself would fail.

Fa Ai Jun nodded. “That’s good. Let’s talk with your Elders and see what you have. There isn’t much more time.”

The four of them had already talked it through: If Song Mu and Tan Xin hadn’t come back by the end of the day, they would have gone and attacked without the help of the potion. There simply was too little time so it couldn’t be helped. Since there were more people now, that seemed to be the best choice even though it was dangerous.

The two disciples followed her at once and soon, everyone sat down in the study of Elder Baili’s courtyard and Tan Xin took out the ingredients they had gotten.

Ximen Chang didn’t study alchemy himself but he had grown up in the Zhen Yan Sect and was still able to recognize a lot of herbs other cultivators might find difficult to distinguish. Meanwhile, Fa Ai Jun had at least dabbled in it even though her attainments in this regard couldn’t be compared to many others. She had mostly focused her studies on supportive spells that had a more direct impact on battle.

Still, even though neither of them was a fully-fledged alchemist, their understanding was high enough to understand Tan Xin’s plans. Listening to her explanation, they nodded slowly.

“I think this should work.” Fa Ai Jun had the deepest understanding so she took the initiative to speak up. “We do have several disciples that are alchemists so I’ll gather them and have them help you.”

Elder Ximen gave a hum. “Can we make it until the evening?”

Elder Fa glanced at Tan Xin who nodded.

“If we start now and I don’t have to do everything myself, it shouldn’t be an issue. Depending on how many people you have who can help, we should be done in a few hours and can attack before night falls.”

Elder Ximen got to his feet at once. “I’ll get them. Set up everything else in the meantime.”

Alchemy had rather stringent requirements. It wasn’t the type of thing that could be done outside. They needed an environment that was free of distractions with a more or less even temperature and no wind. Since there would be several people making their own potion, it would be best if each of them could have a room of their own to work.

Elder Xing might not be too familiar with alchemy either but almost every cultivator understood these requirements well enough. Thus, he stood up and went to see which rooms were suitable for everyone. It would be best to keep them close enough together so another courtyard house would be perfect.

In this way, everything was soon organized and Tan Xin and the disciples of the Zhen Yan Sect sat down with the ingredients and started to refine them. In just two hours, a row of potions had been produced which was ready to be used on the disciples in the underground palace. Although then again, it was questionable whether that would still be necessary by the time they arrived.
