Chapter 145 – Glasses boy is, once again, shaken by the shocking truth

Lisse is strong.

She is the strongest and most stable fighter among us, trainees.

Me and Cherry aren’t suited to this kind of close quarters combat in the first place.

As for Chace and Florentine, they may be pretty strong, but their strength fluctuates considerably depending on the situation they’re in.

But Lisse is stable. She is strong regardless of the circumstances.

Right now, she was exhaling small sharp breaths while swinging her sword.

Her sword moves quickly, but her core is undisturbed. She connects one movement to the other in fast fluid movements.

And she can keep going.

Over and over again, she can keep on attacking.

… But Zet is way too outside of normality.

He was dodging all of Lisse’s attacks, and he was grinning the whole time.

He might be moving faster than she can swing her sword.

Considering how he is moving, it’s quite possible that he could counterattack whenever he wanted.

Essentially, Zet seemed to be able to dodge Lisse’s attacks while playing around.

The more I look at it, the more I realize how frightening this pervert is.

So… Just what should I do about all this?

******

First things first, Lisse’s reason to fight.

Or rather, the reason she wants to kill Zet.

It is… Well… She’s pushing her anger towards the wrong person?

Or rather, we should question if there is even a reason for her to be angry in the first place.

I mean, I’m alive. This alone already creates a contradiction in the story.

Because Lisse seems to think that the four of us are already dead.

She’s attacking Zet to avenge us.

… And Zet isn’t doing anything about it.

He looks like a pervert, his attitude is bad, his tone is belligerent, and he doesn’t seem to have any intention of trying to clear up the misunderstanding.

A part of me honestly wants to start attacking Zet right away.

But from Zet’s point of view, Lisse must look like a girl who is completely out of her mind and wants to kill him no matter what.

Isn’t that just awful?

This is the lawless country. There’s no point in preaching morality, reason or understanding.

But a murder attempt shouldn’t be carried out for this kind of ridiculous reason, right?

Because Lisse’s reason is suspicious.

Because Lisse’s reason is fake.

It is an anger that comes from either deception or from a misunderstanding.

Is it okay to let this fight continue without first clearing up this misunderstanding? Without finding out what the truth is?

If Lisse wants to kill Zet without any reason in particular, then I won’t stop her.

Or rather, I might even help her if she really wants to go all the way with this.

I do not want to take Zet’s side. Neither as an individual nor as a bodyguard.

… But when I think about what will come later…

I’m not sure if Lisse will take it well, if she finds out that she killed someone over a misunderstanding.

It’s possible that it might end up being a traumatic experience for her.

I’m not sure how to call her… It’s hard to call her a friend.

But uhn… As someone that I have known for a while, an acquaintance of sorts, I don’t want to see her hurt.

So, let’s try clarifying things before I get involved.

“Uhn… Can I have a minute? Mr. Zet? Strange shirtless person over there?” I called out to him.

“Hah? Don’t call me out in a stupid way while I’m having fun.” Zet answered while still dodging Lisse’s deadly swings.

And he stared at me with a glare that clearly showed that I put him in a bad mood… Scary. It’s a scary grin alright.

“It’s just that there is something I really need to ask you.” I told him.

“… You serious? Can’t you see that it is not a good moment?” He answered while still dodging her attacks.

“It is not? From my point of view, you’re having a really easy time in this battle.

“It almost seems like you’re leisurely having some teatime while enjoying some sweets and chatting about amenities.” I replied.

“Haah…?” Zet started laughing, “I don’t get what you’re saying at all, but you’re pretty funny.

“Alright, tell me.”

This was quite the scene alright.

Lisse had been chasing him with all her might. She was clearly frustrated as he kept on dodging all her attacks.

Though well, it’s understandable.

Anyone would get frustrated when fighting an opponent who can turn their gaze away from a battle, start laughing, and calmly talk to someone else, while still dodging each attack that comes their way.

But that’s just how ruthless reality is.

Zet just has way too much room to spare in this fight.

But don’t worry, Lisse.

Depending on Zet’s response and on what you wish to do, I too will join the fight.

After all, if I don’t do something about Zet, then I won’t be able to keep on escorting old lady Adyll, and we won’t be able to return home.

******

“So, honest question, have you killed four or give people recently?” I asked.

“Kill? Recently? I almost never kill anybody in the first place.

“After all, once you kill somebody, it’s all over, isn’t it? You can’t have fun with a dead person.” Zet replied.

Lisse’s reason was broken this easily.

“It’s a lie!” Lisse exclaimed.

No, Lisse, Zet might not be lying.

Zet may be a pervert and fairly suspicious, but he also seems to be the kind of person that does things with honest brute force. He doesn’t seem to be the scheming kind of person.

On the other hand, Beckenberg seems to be much more likely to deceive people.

I mean, in the first place, he tricked old lady Adyll. He used her as a bait to lure Zed here.

“Hey, you short-sighted and stupid girl, I think it’s better to properly check things before trying to kill somebody.” I told her.

“Shut up!” She replied.

“Isn’t it more important to figure out if the comrades you thought dead are alive or not?

“Don’t you think that you should confirm that first? Isn’t that more important than killing Mr. Zet?” I asked her.

Lisse didn’t reply.

Lisse’s movements stopped.

She stayed silent for a second, before turning around and asking, “… Beckenberg! This guy killed my comrades, didn’t he!?”

Seems like my words finally reached her.

… So that’s how it is, huh? Lisse must have been deceived by this fat old man.

“Hey, hey. Are you seriously doubting me? Here.” Beckenberg replied as he pulled out something.

He was unable to escape, so he stayed there, sat at the table.

And then, he took out some glasses out of his pocket.

… Ah, my glasses that were taken by the ‘gatekeepers’.

It’s not like I forgot about them, but the ‘gatekeepers’ who stole my glasses seemed to have sold them fairly quickly to the owner of a store.

So, when I tried to connect my vision to that of the glasses, all that I could see was the interior of a dimly lit store. There was no movement near them whatsoever.

So, I left them alone.

I can track them at any moment though, so why not now?

And… They’re right there. The same glasses. Right on Beckenberg’s hands.

The store owner probably sold them for a price that they thought was a bargain.

“Didn’t this belong to one of your comrades? The person that gave this to me said that he got it from the corpse of a person that was killed by Zet.” Beckenberg said.

… Huh? Hold on.

Beckenberg’s Gift, which I had been unable to see until now, was currently visible… ‘Agitator’.

No way… Is this for real?

I can’t believe there are two unique-level Gifts in this place.

******

Agitator.

I don’t know all the details about it, but from what I researched, the first emperor of the Great Empire actually had this Gift.

That person used it to gather the scattered tribes and settlements into one large nation.

A power that can move the heart of masses. That instigates them and messes with their perception.

The exact extent of the power is unknown though. Perhaps only those that have the Gift can fully understand it.

Agitator is a unique-level Gift. It’s not only extremely rare, but also strong enough to be the kind of thing you hear about in legends.

In stories where you’d see a hero being hired by a great king that was loved by their people… It’s in this kind of fairy tale that you would usually see a Gift like Agitator.

It certainly made for a nice story for commoners like me.

But well… The first emperor who possessed this Gift was the person who created the Great Empire, so… This is definitely a legendary Gift alright.

To think Beckenberg has a unique-level Gift…

And also…

Old lady Adyll clicked her tongue, “Those disgusting eyes that move people’s hearts…” she commented.

There was one more thing that made me think that Zet was dangerous.

… He too has a unique-level Gift that is talked about in legends.

Iron Eater.

A Gift that allows one to eat metal.

Once more, I felt like I understood why Sorichika gave me her assignment.
