Chapter 163 – Glasses boy sees the bare desire

It’s already been two days since I visited the craftsmen’s district.

The day before yesterday may have been busy because of my visits to the slums and to the craftsmen’s district, but my life here is pretty calm if I don’t have any errands to attend.

Old lady Adyll never went out either.

“I have something I need to do this morning. Come with me.” Old lady Adyll said.

Me, miss Seviarow and old lady Adyll had just started eating breakfast when I was told about today’s schedule.

“As I said the other day, I would like to take some time to visit the craftsmen’s district today.” I replied.

I had already told old lady Adyll about how I might do a job for old man Tatsunami.

It’s not something worth hiding.

Or rather, it’s a good idea to tell my employer about any errands that I’m scheduling for myself.

“Don’t worry. Tatsunami will be in the place that we’re going to. You should be able to talk to him there.” Old lady Adyll replied.

Oh, really…?

Mmmm… Something about this feels… Incredibly wrong. The way she’s talking about this is making me feel uncomfortable.

Old man Tatsunami will be at the place that old lady Adyll is going to?

“Where are we going to?” I asked.

“It’s a room that Beckenberg prepared.

“No information was leaked this time around though, so no surprise visitors will come.” Old lady Adyll replied.

… I see.

We’re going to a place where both Beckenberg and old man Tatsunami will be at.

In other words, old lady Adyll is planning on meeting with those two.

“May I ask what you’re going to talk about there?” I decided to ask.

“You already have a good idea of it, don’t you?” She grinned.

Oh, so it really is about that, huh?

I didn’t tell old lady Adyll about the bet thing because I thought it would be a hassle, but it seems like she found out about it anyways.

This personal bet of mine is apparently going to involve all rulers of this city.

… Seems like it’s gonna become something important.

“It’s nice to have events like these from time to time.” Miss Seviarow commented.

Judging from her tone, she seemed to have also guessed that it was going to be something big.

“Do you know what they’re planning on doing, exactly?” I asked old lady Adyll.

“If it was up to me, I’d make the bet become a big event involving a lot of people.

“This way, no matter who won or lost, I’d still be able to make a good profit.” She replied.

Oh, I see…

So my personal bet is going public and will involve a lot of people… I see, I see…

If I hadn’t created this Elle identity, I would have definitely run away from this.

All participants of this event will surely stand out a lot. I would much rather take it easy and observe everything from the sidelines instead of participating.

Seriously… A huge event from that bet?

“You’re definitely gonna be pushing things in that direction, aren’t you, hag?” Seviarow asked.

“There are many things that I want to do with it, but Beckenberg should be the one in charge of the organization.

“Tatsunami probably has some plans too, so I guess we’re gonna be discussing those details today.” Old lady Adyll replied.

As I listened to her words, I remembered that old man Tatsunami told me that Beckenberg would surely be involved in the bet in some way.

I guess the bet becoming a public event is the result of Beckenberg’s participation.

He’s probably planning on using the profits of the event to make up for the damage caused by Zett.

Beckenberg doesn’t seem to be the kind of person to stay down after he falls. He’s probably the kind of person that handles adversity well.

He may be quite annoying, but he is also quite tenacious.

… I almost let out a sigh, but I held it back. This is fine.

This was supposed to just be my personal bet, but the scale of it grew a lot.

Nonetheless, what I need to do won’t change.

I’m doing a job, and getting the Obsidian Wolf’s fang turned into a knife in return.

That’s it.

As long as that doesn’t change, my will to do this won’t change either… Even if my determination was shaken a bit.

******

As planned, we rode a horse-drawn carriage after we were done with breakfast.

The butler, Dynawood, was driving it, and he took us to a restaurant in the glory district.

It was quite different from the restaurant that we met Zett in the other day.

Also, the restaurant’s clerk brought us to a private room this time around… Truly, this place was quite luxurious.

If it wasn’t for this bet thing, I would most likely never enter this kind of place… There really are way too many things in this world that we just can’t get in contact with easily.

“Oh, I’m glad you came.” Beckenberg greeted us with a disgusting giggle.

“I truly regret coming to see your vulgar face.” Old lady Adyll commented.

Beckenberg’s face seemed to be a bit too dazzled by the money making prospects today.

“Well, don’t just stand around as you greet me. Take a seat.” Beckenberg replied.

Beckenberg was already on a chair, and he gestured towards an empty chair for old lady Adyll’s usage.

And just as she sat down, more guests arrived.

“Oh? Did we keep you waiting?” Old man Tatsunami said as he entered the room.

He was accompanied by his son, Katsumi.

Both of them were dressed in work uniforms, so they seemed to be a bit out of place.

Nonetheless, they didn’t seem to care about that.

In any case, old man Tatsunami and his son both sat down too, so I was now the only person left standing, as I was quietly standing behind old lady Adyll.

I am her bodyguard after all, so I can’t sit down.

That said, I want to leave this room already.

Beckenberg isn’t accompanied by his bodyguards today, so this meeting seems to be quite private.

Moreover, I honestly don’t want to hear anything about their secrets and about what they’re planning behind the scenes.

But nobody is telling me to leave, even if I really want them to tell me that.

Come on, please tell me to leave already.

“I’m thinking of doing a pretty large scale event.

“I’ve already talked to a few people in neighboring countries that I have contacts with, and I’m considering increasing the types and number of bets that we can make.” Beckenberg started.

Come on, don’t go saying that with such a vulgar face, Beckenberg. Your eyes clearly show that you’re completely blinded by the money-making prospects of this.

Like I said, this was meant to just be my personal bet, remember?

… Well, no, I didn’t say anything, nor do I want to say anything here.

And well, I guess it’s more like Tatsunami’s personal bet that I got involved in.

Still, they seem to really be planning on making this a large scale event out of that personal bet… Guess I can’t really do anything about it.

“Various bets? I guess you’re thinking of a pretty elaborate hunting competition then? Ain’t that interesting?” Old man Tatsunami grinned.

He was grinning as if this was somebody else’s problem… It’s all your fault though!

… Well, I guess I was the one who accepted his proposal.

Also, I later learned that Krozheit actually has an already established concept of hunting competition. It was essentially an easy way to let two passionate hunters settle their disputes, and that’s what old man Tatsunami had originally proposed when he talked to me.

However, Beckenberg was planning on expanding the idea considerably to turn it into an event that can make a large profit.

And old lady Adyll seemed to be willing to cooperate with it, as she would also gain a fair bit of money from this.

******

“How about we invite dozens of participants and make only a handful be winners?

“We can give prizes to the people from first to third places to incentivize participation, then rip everyone else off with a hefty participation fee.” Beckenberg suggested.

“Not a bad idea. We can also earn some nice amount from maintaining the weapons of all the participants.” Old man Tatsunami nodded.

“We can bring some beautiful people from the brothel district to act as companions and guides to liven things up.” Old lady Adyll suggested.

… It wasn’t just Beckenberg after all. All three of them were absolutely dazzled by the money.

Though it was honestly a bit refreshing to see such open and straightforward desire.

And well, I guess I can’t really say anything about them wanting to prioritize profits. I’m involved in this just because I want a knife that I can’t afford, after all.
