Chapter 169 – Glasses boy leaves the mansion in the brothel district

“What!? Are you going to leave!?” Miss Seviarow exclaimed.

Coming to think of it, I didn’t tell her either.

She had an indescribable expression on her when she saw me come to the breakfast table with my luggage on me.

Well, I guess I should tell her now then, “I’m leaving after breakfast.”

She looked even more surprised than before now, “But I haven’t even held you for a night yet!?” she exclaimed.

Hey… What do you mean with ‘yet’? It’s not happening.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m definitely leaving regardless.” I told her plainly.

I had a bit of a sense of crisis on me ever since I started wearing maid outfits here, but the source of this feeling had finally revealed its true nature… Ah, hold on, her true nature had been exposed from the beginning, hadn’t it?

“You foolish girl. If you had snatched Elle properly, then we might have found a way to keep him here.” Old lady Adyll looked at her daughter coldly.

And at the same time, I stared at old lady Adyll coldly too… There was no chance of that happening from the start.

“Wait, did you know about it, Hag!? Why didn’t you tell me, then!? If you had told me, I might have done this or that…” Miss Seviarow complained.

“I thought your attitude would get worse if I told you, and you might have made Elle leave immediately. You’re truly worthless for this kind of thing.” Old lady Adyll told her.

Well, she is right about that.

“Just give up on it. I thought about it for a while, but I couldn’t come up with anything to keep Elle here.

“Neither money, nor items, nor women would be enough to keep Elle with us.” Old lady Adyll sighed, “Truly, it’s just too hard to deal with strong people who aren’t very greedy.”

Me, a strong person?

After realizing the true extent of Zett’s power this morning, I can’t accept this kind of label at all.

I think old lady Adyll can only say this kind of thing because she is too powerful herself.

… And honestly, I don’t think I’m particularly strong.

… Well, in any case, the only thing that is really hard to let go of in this mansion is the thick slice of bacon that I have been eating every morning.

Breakfast here always has a variety of high-class dishes in it, but most of it is light… Which well, makes sense, as old lady Adyll is already elderly, so she can’t eat heavy food in the morning.

But the main dish served for breakfast was bacon paired together with fresh soft-boiled eggs… This combination was absolutely delicious.

By now, I already got used to eating with the rather formal forks, knives and spoons.

I cut the bacon with my knife, then brought it together with some eggs to my mouth… The rich flavor of the eggs combined with the salty bacon was nothing short of perfect. It was fantastic no matter how many times I ate it, and I really felt like I would gladly eat this daily forever.

Alas, this is the last time I’ll be eating this.

My true biggest regret is that I won’t be eating this anymore.

******

“Elle, you remember our bet, right?” Old lady Adyll told me as soon as breakfast had ended.

I was just drinking a bit of tea before getting ready to leave.

And well, of course I remember. There’s no way I would forget.

“If I win, you’ll tell me a secret. That’s the deal, right?” I replied.

To be more precise, she’ll tell me about her Gift, but since there are other people here, I decided to leave it vague.

Old lady Adyll grinned, perhaps because she liked the way I phrased it… Though her grin looked quite greedy and evil today.

“That’s how it is. It’s all good as long as you haven’t forgotten it. I’ll bet a lot of money on you then.” Old lady Adyll said.

Ah, sure? That is your own problem though.

“A bet? What? Is it about the hunting festival?” Miss Seviarow asked.

“It’s just a verbal promise. Elle is getting something if he wins.” Old lady Adyll explained simply.

Miss Seviarow’s eyes seemed to shine when hearing that, “Alright, then make a bet with me too. I’ll participate on the hunting festival as well.” She told me.

… What?

“And if I win, you’ll be mine for one night.” She said next.

… Whoa… Her eyes were so serious right now that she was actually frightening.

“Okay.” I replied simply.

“So that’s how you’ll behave until the end. Truly a shame… Huh!? What!? You serious!? You okay with that!?” Miss Seviarow seemed to have taken a moment to process my reply.

Why is she so surprised if she was the one to propose the bet though?

… Well, I guess it’s because she understands that I would never accept that bet under normal circumstances.

However… “This bet doesn’t really matter, because I won’t lose.” I told her.

Old lady Adyll had said that she wanted to see what I was really capable of. That’s what our bet entailed.

So, over this past week, I have been thoroughly preparing myself for today’s hunt.

I visited the forest where the festival will be held many times over, and I deeply researched what are the Demon Beasts that are usually seen near Krozheit and which of them could be suitable hunting targets.

I have good chances of winning this.

Or rather, I’m almost guaranteed to.

Honestly, with this kind of perfect favorable conditions, if a hunter were to lose in a hunting competition, they’d usually return home crying and restart their training from scratch.

I would rather not go back home to be beaten up by my master though.

“Did you hear that, Tyran!? Let’s go participate on the festival!” Miss Seviarow got up from her seat as she exclaimed that.

Then, both she and her bodyguard, Tyran, rushed out of the dining room.

“I’ll be going too, manager. Thank you for taking care of me until now.” I told old lady Adyll.

“If you’re ever in trouble, by all means feel free to come here again. You’ll always be welcome in this mansion.” She replied.

Is this a way of making connections, I wonder?

And well… I also wonder if there’ll ever be a time when I will need to be under old lady Adyll’s care again.

I don’t know what the future holds though, so I guess it will just be what it has to be.

******

“Ah, hold on a second, Eil.” Old lady Adyll called out to me just as I tried leaving the room.

… And she used my real name, even if I never told it to her.

“My name is Elle.” I replied.

My heart had pounded quickly in surprise, but I did my best to remain calm as I turned around.

Unsurprisingly, old lady Adyll was grinning evilly.

“You won’t get it right away, so I’ve already left it with you. Just take it.” Old lady Adyll told me.

“… I won’t get it right away?” I repeated her words.

“Indeed. Knowing is scary, after all.” She said.

Is that so?

I guess this means I won’t understand what exactly she is talking about even if I think about it right now?

Well, with those somewhat troubling words on the back of my mind, I left the brothel district.

… I wonder how long it will take me to understand what she actually meant.
