Chapter 13: I’m the Murderer

October 13th, 2022

Li Weiyi disclosed the specifics of his crime.

Li Weiyi appeared to be dying in the interrogation room. With Wang Chao’s permission, Li Weiyi was lighting up one cigarette after another. Jiang He was observing Li Weiyi’s smoking gestures which were in continuous shifting postures of his two fingers. Furthermore, when Li Weiyi smoked, he spat out the majority of the smoke rather than inhaling it into his lungs.

Li Weiyi’s teeth were remarkably white, and his fingers showed no signs of yellowing.

Even when the pumping was intense, Li Weiyi coughed uncontrollably.

Li Weiyi was unquestionably a new smoker based on these minor characteristics.

This was recognized not only by Jiang He but likewise by Wang Chao, who was seated next to him.

While Jiang He and Wang Chao were roughly the same age, Wang Chao has been smoking for ten years and was a seasoned smoker.

Li Weiyi smoked clumsily. Li Weiyi revealed all the disclosures of his crime after smoking five consecutive cigarettes, with the interrogation room being covered fully by smoke already.

Speaking of which, the lifestyle of Li Weiyi’s family was a typical one.

Wu Guifeng would get up at six in the morning to make breakfast for the family as the new day began whereas Li Weiyi would get up at 7:00 a.m. to bathe and eat.

When it was around 7:30 in the morning, Li Weiyi would go out with his mother after which he would leave for work while Wu Guifeng headed out to collect the junk.

Li Weiyi ate his meal outside or in the company cafeteria around noon, while Wu Guifeng went grocery shopping before returning home.

He Huijuan, who had been sleeping, would wake up around 11:30 to bathe and eat lunch.

When Wu Guifeng washed the dishes and chopsticks at roughly 1:00 and went outside to pick up the junk, He Huijuan would be playing with her phone and computer.

Wu Guifeng went home to cook dinner and wait for his son until about 6:00 in the evening.

Li Weiyi would return home from work around 10:00 and have a brief conversation with her mother. Then he’d wash up and go to bed. He Huijuan would sit in front of the computer screen until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. before playing with her phone until she was too tired to do so.

They had been living in this way for the past two years, practically every day in such a manner.

And Li Weiyi and He Huijuan hadn’t engaged in any sexual activity in two years.

His life had turned into a stagnant pool of water that was dull and tedious.

Li Weiyi was a wandering corpse on this planet. Li Weiyi was mindful of his lack of elegance in speech and interpersonal interactions, as well as his ineptness in this position. However, Li Weiyi was a person who was even more reluctant to change. He realised that he was a cowardly guy and that it would be good to select occupations that did not compel him to communicate with people.

Li Weiyi, though, refused to resign and change.

A large mortgage, an unemployed mother, and a wife who did not work at home.

Li Weiyi was afraid he would lose everything if he changed.

He pretended to be a grandson in front of everyone. He dared not contradict his superior or become irate with a client. He smiled at everyone but himself, and his grin never flowered.

He told himself that this was how life worked. There must be many others who were in worse circumstances than him.

People, however, can deceive others but not themselves.

Such a way of living has driven Li Weiyi to grow weary of it. The thought that all would be over if he leaped in front of the car on the road with his eyes closed crossed his mind, and Li Weiyi considered doing it several times yet lacked the courage.

Many individuals in the world were such people. They had their hope for the future lost eternally despite their valiant efforts to remain alive and lack of courage to commit suicide.

Li Weiyi collapsed while walking down the street that day.

The collapse of modern people was absent of hysterical movements or hoarse shouting.

It exploded in the air like a transparent bubble that was oblivious to everyone.

It was so unobtrusive that no one noticed it was ever there.

This bubble was Li Weiyi.

That day, he made his way back home, hoping that this final refuge would offer him the support he needed and that even the slightest solace would heal the damaged bubble.

But he only faced criticism and humiliation from his family.

Li Weiyi was not comforted by He Huijuan; instead, she reprimanded him for something he was lacking, declaring that even a dog was superior to him.

He had never disputed her since He Huijuan had married him, despite how severely she reprimanded either him or his mother, but the depleted Li Weiyi couldn’t control himself this time.

Looking at the wife in front of him, who only knew how to play games, rage and sorrow predominated in his emotions.

Li Weiyi recently signed an order without checking the contract due to his own mistakes, and as a consequence, the decimal point was moved forward by one digit, resulting in a price discrepancy of 10,000, which must be repaid by Li Weiyi himself.

Li Weiyi’s wife and mother must support him because his monthly earnings of only 5,000 RMB were insufficient to cover the mortgage and other expenses. For Li Weiyi, more than 100,000 RMB was a far-off goal. However, Li Weiyi kept it a secret from everyone, particularly his mother and wife.

In his anguish, the man clenched his teeth and swallowed it down in his stomach.

He Huijuan, on the other hand, was shameless and had been roaming the Internet for many years.

When Li Weiyi couldn’t tolerate it any longer, he pounced on his wife.

He Huijuan had always stated that she was not a man’s wife, but Li Weiyi intended to show something this time

Li Weiyi consequently was violent in his impulse.

Weiyi had a forced relationship with He Huijuan. Perhaps she understood Li Weiyi as her husband after all since she did not resist throughout the sexual act.

He Huijuan uttered the most devastating words to Li Weiyi when she put on her underwear.

What she said was Li Weiyi’s bottom line, and was also the last thing He Huijuan should say.

Divorce was that word.

He only exercised one of the most basic rights he had as her husband, but in exchange, He Huijuan asked for a divorce.

Li Weiyi sat for a few moments, looking at his wife who was familiar yet unfamiliar to him.

‘Even if you have a dog, it’ll wag its tail at you.’

But the woman who he had been raising for the previous five years said the word ‘divorce’ which shattered him.

Li Weiyi was obedient, honest, and never engaged in conflict with others. He didn’t seem like the kind of man who would murder others. Nevertheless, Li Weiyi was not without a bottom line despite his cowardice. Even if  Li Weiyi’s bottom line was more or less as low as the soil, it was still present. Even the most honest person would become menacing when the bottom line was at stake.

Li Weiyi Li was abnormally composed. He retrieved a serrated knife after entering the kitchen. He Huijuan remained on the bed at the time as Li Weiyi approached her. He lifted the knife abruptly and plunged it directly through He Huijuan’s abdomen while his other hand covered He Huijuan’s mouth tightly.

It was unexpected for He Huijuan to witness her spineless husband pulling off such an act, causing eyes to widen.

He Huijuan’s life was lost, accompanied by shock and despair.

She may have never realized that no one was without a temper.

People’s tolerance levels were akin to a balloon. Some folks will toss their hatred upon the ground, and the balloon will always shrink while others will conceal their wrath, which will cause the balloon to grow. And when the balloon can no longer take the pressure and burst, the person who let the balloon explode will be held guilty.

If a person has a good temper, don’t unjustly bully them. Even if Hei Huijuan had her own viewpoint about the way she treated Li Weiyi, she will never be able to reveal it to him.

After murdering He Huijuan, Li Weiyi was dumbfounded and remained beside the bed for a while.

When he was killing on impulse, his mind went blank, but when he cooled down, he realized what he had done was irrevocable.

Since he was a child, Li Weiyi had lived in the countryside and had witnessed other people slaughtering pigs. He always felt this was bloody and brutal, so he secretly resolved to put in the effort essential to become a decent college student who would not have to do these jobs.

Li Weiyi’s resolve was achieved, but he never expected that he would kill someone one day.

While Li Weiyi was in a panic and uncertain of what to do, there was movement at the door.

Instinctively, Li Weiyi withdrew the serrated knife from Huijuan’s body as he was taken aback.

When he hurriedly checked the time on the new phone he had just bought for his wife, it was around 11:00.

The phone rang once more as Li Weiyi’s heart started to settle.

He was certain that his mother had returned at this time.

Wu Guifeng owned a key and she will see that her son had murdered her daughter-in-law once she opened the door and entered.

Li Weiyi dwelled on taking his own life because he would rather die than let his mother witness this scene.

He dashed out, hoping to lock the door so his mother couldn’t get in while knowing he had time to commit suicide.

He had to die before his elderly mother came in.

Before he could even put the knife down, he swiftly slipped the phone into his pocket and bolted to the door.

The door swung open.

Wu Guifeng caught sight of the knife in her son’s hand, the blood on the knife, and her son’s red eyes as she closed the door.

For the first time, Wu Guifeng realized that her son had murdered someone.

Li Weiyi was the only person in the village to be admitted into a university as well as the most intelligent and qualified person in the village to pursue a successful career.

What exactly was the so-called achievement of a big cause?

For a split second, both mother and son’s minds were racing.

Li Weiyi suddenly recalled something he told his mother when he was very young: “When I grow up, I will take the university entrance examination, purchase a huge house in the city, pick up my parents, and live there.”

When the ideal was attained, though, it was no longer as pure and simple as it once was.

Li Weiyi rushed up and pierced his mother’s body with the kitchen knife.

Sometimes, death was the most ideal option. Li Weiyi was fully aware that if news of this circumstance spread, the villagers’ condemnation would drown his old mother. His elderly mother had lived in the village with dignity for her whole life.

Li Weiyi was aware that her mother would rather die than to face this.

Wu Guifeng leaned against the shoe cabinet without a struggle.

Li Weiyi lacked the courage to confront his mother. He hastily exited the building and began to meander along the street. He was befuddled, like a frightened butterfly. His phone rang in his pocket. He Huijuan’s netizens were looking for He Huijuan to chat with. Terror overcame him and he flung his cellphone on the side of the road.

Until a police officer called Li Weiyi on his phone, at which point Li Weiyi realized what had unfolded.

He wanted to turn himself in, but he was afraid.

He wanted to kill himself yet didn’t dare.

He was, after all, still a coward.
