The new players were guided by a receptionist to the outdoor field at the back of the building, where several people seemed to be waiting for them.

“Welcome to the Adventurers Guild, dear Travelers. I am Reynald, vice guildmaster and the leader of today's introductory course.”

Reynald was a posh-looking gentleman with an exquisite mustache, and wore a dark blue formal vest with matching slacks. His short hair was neatly trimmed and he carried a wooden walking cane, though he didn't seem to be relying on it.

“Before we teach you the basics of combat, I will be giving you an explanation of our guild and its purpose,” Reynald began, before being interrupted by a groan of disappointment from one of the players.

A vein popped out of his temple.

“The explanation will be very brief, I assure you,” he snapped calmly. Taking a deep breath, Reynald started again.

“The Adventurers’ Guild was originally two seperate guilds: the Explorers’ Guild and the Mercenaries’ Guild. The former was chronically underfunded due to the expenses of hiring escorts long-term (and the bloody officials cutting the budget), while the latter had a terrible reputation due to the behavior of its members (some of you would have fit right in).”

“I’m picking up some hidden signals in his words here…” Louis whispered incredulously.

“Really...?” Fenris didn't notice.

“Shush,” Gen scolded them.

Ignoring them, Reynald continued.

“Our current queen, Gunhild II, combined the two defunct guilds to form the current Adventurer’s Guild and sanctioned it as a government service.”

A hand was raised.

“Yes, a question?”

“Are we going to have to fill out government paperwork?”

“Gods no,” Reynald scoffed, a wave of relief passing through the older players. Realizing his slip in tone, Reynald cleared his throat.

“Pardon me… Though you are free to apply as a guild employee if you wish (please help), adventurers rarely have to deal with paperwork unless they accept an official request… which leads us to the next topic: earning money.”

“As an adventurer, you can earn Geld (—that's our currency, if you couldn't figure that out—) by completing either ‘bounties’ or ‘requests’. Guild bounties require you to either hunt or gather enough of a certain creature or plant, and are constantly available; you can also earn a little extra by selling any other materials you bring, though the price will depend on their quality.”

“Requests, on the other hand, are usually posted by citizens of that guild branch’s area; unlike bounties, you’ll have to sign a contract for its completion and will receive sanctions if you give up on the request. (It's a huge pain in the ass to deal with the paperwork, so) We recommend only accepting requests that you’re confident in completing.”

“Well, without further ado…” Reynald clapped his hands. “Let us begin the practical aspect of this lesson. Please take a sword and shield from the bins here. You’ll be working one-on-one with an instructor to learn how to defend yourself,” Reynald gestured to the men and women behind him with padded ‘spears’—poles with a ball of cloth at the end.

“We aren't allowed to use other weapons?” Someone asked with an annoyed tone.

Reynald, immediately recognizing them as the one that had moaned about having to listen to his explanation, tightened his grip on his cane.

“Do you have experience with any weapons?” Reynald asked with a well-practiced smile.

“Well, uh…”

“The principles of combat can be applied to virtually every weapon. It matters not what weapon you choose to use after learning those principles—but for this course, you will be using a sword and shield. Do you understand?” His facade was cracking.

Everyone quickly nodded.
