Vol. 1 Chapter 5

An untouchable warrior knight

Marianne Verdemion, deputy commander of the Knights of Red Phoenix, was going down the street with ten of her subordinates to investigate a specific crime.

Wearing the red armor that is the color of the Knights, and riding a horse, she’s so beautiful that everyone looked back at her. Her hair was fiery red. When tied in a knot at the back of her head, it fluttered in the wind like a horse’s tail.

She is the daughter of the prestigious Verdemion family, also famous as a talented and beautiful swordswoman, she was chosen as the deputy leader of the “Red Knights” at the age of 17. She carries a long sword on her back that is twice as long as a normal sword, and she handles it with tremendous speed, never allowing anyone to come in contact with her.

When Marianne and her friends arrived at their destination, a small town along the road, the entire town was in sadness.

A priest’s murder.

It was just after the murder of a priest, a major incident that was not befitting of a small, laid-back town.

Marianne was greeted by the town mayor and other influential people.

“It is an honor to meet the world-famous Lady Marianne.”

The mayor looked nervous and held out his right hand.

Marianne just stared at him.

“The murder of a priest is a crime of the first degree. We would like to investigate immediately, if that is alright with you??

“Oh, excuse me. We’ll need witnesses.”

The mayor hurriedly withdrew his hand and led Marianne to a room in the church.

He summoned a man.

Rowe Barry. A man who does menial work at the church.

They interviewed him sitting across the table.

“So, it seems that Mel resented the fact that the Blessing Ceremony didn’t give him any good skills.”

It was a weak motive to kill a priest for that reason alone. However, since we didn’t know the details of the exchange, we could not help but think that it was an impulsive act.

“What about the girl the boy Mel took?

“She’s an orphan of the Elven race. About a year ago, a priest took him in when she was wandering in the forest. She had lost her memory and we didn’t know who she was, so we decided to take her in to the church.”

Rowe rattled off the words as if he had prepared them in advance.

Marianne looked at the man standing beside her.

An elderly man wearing a robe. He was not a warrior by any means, but he stared at the robe and then spoke to Marianne.

She furrowed her brow suspiciously.

“Now for the last question.”

Rowe smiled generously as if to say, ‘Ask me anything you want’.

Immediately after, his expression froze.

“Did you know that the murdered priest had sold the orphans to slavers?”

“No, no, that’s … no way, haha…”

Marianne glared at Rowe, and that was the signal.

“What?”

A huge soldier waiting in the corner of the room grabbed the back of Rowe’s head and held him against the table.

The man was Marianne’s aide, and his name is Gazuso.

At fifty years old, he’s still one of the top swordsmen in the country.

Marianne said coldly.

“That reaction. You definitely knew that.”

The priest was a man of character. What will people do when they hear that he was involved in the slave trade?

First, they would doubt their own ears. They would either ask the question back or examine the content in their minds. Then, they would say, “That’s absurd. I would try to find out what happened”, and then get angry, as some people do.

But he didn’t fit any of those categories. His eyes swam deceptively, and he was clearly upset.

“Gazuso, I’ll leave the interrogation to you.”

“Yes, Ma’am”

Gazuso grabbed Rowe by the scruff of the neck and pulled him up in front of him. Rowe shuddered when he saw the cross-shaped scar on his cheek.

Marianne left the room without looking back. An older man in a robe followed her.

With the guidance of the mayor, they stepped into the morgue in the church.

The corpse of the priest was placed in a coffin.

The blood had been wiped away, but he had been stabbed several times in the chest.

“What do you think?” At Marianne’s words, the old man in the robe stared at the corpse of the priest.

“What a surprise. This is the great bandit, Hegel Oys.”

This man is a rank B appraiser, one of only four in the country.

“Hmmm, he’s quite a big guy, isn’t he? I can’t believe he’s been hiding out in a place like this.”

“Hegel abandoned his banditry and disappeared, but it seems he was making a fortune in the slave trade, hiding his true identity in the countryside.”

“But” the man twisted his head.

“That’s strange. How could a great bandit who specialized in deception be murdered by a boy who has just acquired a unique skill?”

“I’m sure you’ve acquired some very useful unique skills. The question is motive, though……. Did he know that the priest was a bandit or not?”

Marianne asked the mayor, who was listening in disbelief to the conversation between the two.

“What kind of boy is he?”

“Yes, Ma’am. His name is Mel Lylute. Since his parents died, he has been living alone on the outskirts of town, helping on the farm. He is a very ordinary boy. He is not the kind of boy who would turn on Father …… without reason, even if he were a criminal.”

Maybe, the mayor reasoned.

“He was very kind to the orphans in the same situation. He was especially kind to Sylphina, the elf girl he took away, and she loved him very much.”

He continued saying that he may have learned about Hegel’s slave trade and tried to help Sylphina.

Just then, a large man came in and said, “Excuse me. It was Gazuso.”

“Did you get the statement?”

“Yes. After all, that man seems to have been working for the priest, helping him sell off orphans to the slavers. ”

He also knew that the priest was the great bandit Hegel.

“He did not directly see the boy kill the priest, however. He tried to subdue him after the fact, but he got back at him and let him go.”

The mayor raised an eyebrow.

“Mel is not a strong man, to say the least. He is not much different from an old man like me. No matter how much Rowe’s back hurting, I’m not sure if he could fight him off. ……”

“That’s interesting. Now I’m curious to see what unique skills the boy has acquired.”

“Lady Marianne, you are being playful. Shouldn’t we be focusing on catching the slavers now?”

“Don’t be so bitter, Gazuso. We may be able to get some information from him. Mayor, do you have any idea where the Mel boy might have gone?”

“Several people have seen a wagon driving east at a high rate of speed.”

“East, Is it…….. Do they intend to cross the border from there?

Gazuso said, as if remembering.

“Near the eastern border, there’s the ‘City of End of the Hero’. I heard that a group of slavers captured six months ago were buying subhumans there.”

“Oh, you mean the ones who were attacked by a pack of wolves and lost all their slaves? That’s just right. We can also investigate the people who traded with them.”

“If the boy is headed to that city, that is.”

Gazuso shrugged.

“As guided by the Earth Mother Goddess……”

Marianne put her hands on top of each other and prayed peacefully.

Everyone in the room sighed as she closed her eyes and hung her head, looking like a saint of compassion even in her armour.

And then…..

“Meow”

A cat came in through the door that Gazuso had left open.

Marianne softly opened her eyes.

It was Gazuso. It was Gazuso who felt such a sound echoing in the room. He hurriedly intervened between Marianne and the cat.

There was a pitter-patter. Gazuso who felt such a sound echoing in the room, hurriedly intervened between Marianne and the cat,

“Shh, shh, don’t go that way. Here, I’ll give you this.”

Gazuso took a piece of dried meat from his pocket and tossed it into the corner of the room.

The cat went straight for the dried meat.

“Let’s go!”

Marianne took advantage of the opportunity and ran toward the door at a rapid pace.

“Lady Marianne, please wait.”

Gazuso followed after Marianne.

The goal was to reach the “City of End of the Hero”.
