My Little Girl (96)

It was difficult for Emperor Nanchen to imagine Sheng Qianmo could show off such an image to others.

Emperor Nanchen recalled the day of the Yuanyang festival. He’d been seated below the stage and had seen the girl on the stage, playing the guqin and singing with a bowed head. At once he understood the matter, and said, “I have seen her once before. That child was indeed stunning. It is no wonder that Fourth Brother is attentive to her, but… she seems too young…”

Sheng Lingyun couldn’t help but clear his throat. He bowed his head and poured himself a glass of wine. His eyes showed the anguish he felt thinking of Shu Nuan’s appearance, soothing voice, and porcelain-like, snow-tender skin. The more he remembered her, the more he was unable to resist the temptation.

He couldn’t help but gaze at Ningcheng, and he asked, “Brother Yuan, when will Fourth Brother be taking a holiday?”

Sheng Zhiyu frowned at him and questioned, “Why are you asking about this?”

Sheng Lingyun paused for a moment to think of a reason, but the emperor opened his mouth first.

“Whether he’s free or not, the Imperial Mother will be back in the capital soon, and all of you must come to the palace once.”

Sheng Zhiyu was surprised.

“Wasn’t the Imperial Mother in the Western Regions? When did she come back?”

“She’s stayed there for three months. It’s long enough.”

After having accompanied the emperor on the hunt, it was already dusk. Sheng Zhiyu was riding a horse back to his manor. However, on the way, he ran into a carriage that was quite familiar. He wondered who it belonged to, which stirred his curiosity a little, and he sped up his horse. At the right moment, the person inside the carriage poked their head out of a window.

Upon seeing who it was, Sheng Zhiyu was a little surprised. “Sister Xili?”

Sitting in the carriage Ji Xili took pause. She hadn’t expected to meet Sheng Zhiyu here. She stopped the carriage, and, just as she got off, the prince was coming down from his horse.

“Why are you here?”

“Why are you here?”

The two had spoken almost in unison.

Ji Xili pursed her lips and said nothing more.

Sheng Zhiyu was embarrassed. If it’d been before, he would’ve carelessly made a joke, but he recalled their kiss from the celebration night and felt awkward.

Sheng Zhiyu showed the initiative to speak. “I… I was back to the manor. Where were you going, Sister Xili?”

Ji Xili was silent for a moment, before she whispered, “I was looking for you.”

Hearing her answer, Sheng Zhiyu froze. He hadn’t expected Ji Xili to come looking for him in person. He was a little worried: worried that she’d ask about his passionate kiss that night. He hadn’t dared bring it up with her so far, scared that she’d be angry.

However, while Sheng Zhiyu was secretly being nervous, Ji Xili took out a jade ornament from within the lapel of her dress, from near her bosom, and handed it over. She handed it over, and asked while trying to maintain her usual tone, “I remember this is what your mother, the princess, left you. How could you be so careless with it? That night you took me back…”

He was stunned and didn’t respond for a moment. He mumbled, “It was you who grabbed it from my waistband that day. You said you wanted it. I… I’ll give it to you…”

But she blushed and forced the jade ornament into his hands, stubbornly refuting, “No way. I was drunk that night and barely thinking… Don’t take it seriously. I’m leaving now.”

He could only lower his eyes in response.

“Alright,” he said, taking his jade ornament back.

It seemed Xili didn’t remember he’d kissed her…

It was a good thing she didn’t remember.

This way there wouldn’t be a grudge against him.
