Chapter 6: Young Prince Ⅵ

Translator: Flying Lines

Staring at his stinking knee fiercely, Lu Zhishan felt the wound was like the Dali Empire at present, festering bit by bit and implicating the whole day after day until no peace and stability left. However, it became numb without any pain as time passed, which made him gradually forget the feeling of pain and hate when the arrow shot.

He felt tired for the first time in his military career after more than ten years.

“Yongzhan, this is the best doctor in Kunming City.” Zhao Jingting came in with an old man with white beard. He hadn’t taken off his armor, which was full of brown blood with pungent stench. With anxiety on his gaunt face, he said “Yongzhan, all of our military surgeons were dead on the battlefield. We have to look for a doctor outside, you… ”

“Where are the reinforcements? Where are the agreed reinforcements?! ” Lu Zhishan drew the sword by the bed suddenly, pointing to Zhao Jingting’s throat shakily with his eyes glared, “Why didn’t you reinforce us on time?! We had waited for three days and three nights! My…my soldiers had been dead! All of them had been dead! ”

With tears in the eyes, Zhao Jingting slid his Adam’s Apple up and down rapidly, opening his mouth in a hoarsened rasping voice “A sudden flash floods erupted in Yunnan; we were stopped by Lancang River. It was two days later when we finally crossed the river with the built pontoon bridge. What was worse, we were ambushed by Siam soldiers as soon as we got ashore. They lurked on the hill, dropping stones and logs onto us. My army…there were more than thirty thousand soldiers dead or injured in my army. When I finally led the troops to fight through the siege to Shunhua, it was... ”

Zhao Jingting couldn’t go on. As a man of thirty eight years old, he slumped on the ground, covering his face and wailing. He suppressed his emotion desperately, with his teeth gritted fiercely, veins stood on his forehead, but tears flowed turbulently from his fingers, which dropped to the icy armor with the blood and mud on his hand.

“Yongzhan, I am sorry to you! I am sorry to the imperial court! I am sorry to the seventy thousand officers and soldiers!” Zhao Jingting spoke with a lisp, shaking his body violently, “I would have killed myself to apologize for my offence if without the purpose to ask for some pensions for the bereaved officers and soldiers. Yongzhan, why am I not dead?! I am not injured by the sword or arrow at all. Yongzhan, you have no idea…have no idea about how sad I am! ”

How could Lu Zhishan not know it? Only the people who experienced the life-threatening situation in the battle could understand how heavy and terrible the word of empathy was.

That old doctor with white beard pulled out the arrow, cleaned the pus, and sutured the wound for Lu Zhishan with the mulberry-skin-made string in the last. Impacted by the war, herbs were scarce in Yunnan, so that the old doctor didn’t have any anesthesia powder. Lu Zhishan watched the old doctor fiddling with his knee with his rough hands that day. Looking at the pus flowing with the blood, he didn’t say a word from the beginning to the end. But the old doctor sweated with nervousness.

“There was an old story about Guan Yu scraping his bone to heal the wound, and now we have our general pulling out the arrow from knee. You are really a hero. ” After finishing the final suture, the old doctor dried his sweat and signed, “But you have been injured for a long time, and your cartilage was hurt. I am afraid that you will not recover until a rest of one or two years. Don’t force yourself to walk, or you will be disable. ”
