I floated on the endless ocean within my dantian, watching as a new colour seeped it’s way into the fold. The white that used to surround my red waves was becoming slowly overwhelmed by the red of me, the green of Chit and now the brown of Eleb. A wonderful colour, like the trunk to the Chit’s leaves. An uninterruptible tsunami of strength that distinguished itself as a base, as a foundation that would shape the beginnings of my body’s transformation. It filled me with joy seeing the lonely white become conquered.
Although I was happy for the increase in power, strength and fortitude; I was elated that it meant my lonely beginning and the doubts I held, and still did, were slowly becoming less important.
Almost as if in a daze, the breakthrough occurred without my full realisation. Only a small part of me was aware of the change, my path chosen before I had the option to think about it and my qi decided the path where I was being held back the most. Considering the age of my soul, the path my qi chose was natural and understandable but not ideal.
Had I been thinking about it, advancing into Qi body would have been more fitting due to the sect I was a member of. Fortunately, a Qi soul route would make me far more powerful as a cultivator, just, not in the way the Hall of the Mountain Gods would respect.
The breakthrough caused great change to happen within my dantian. Namely, a monolithic structure emerged violently from the ocean showering it with spray. The mountain was rocky and treacherous, jagged and dangerous. Not exactly what I wanted sitting in the middle of my dantian. I floated towards it and rested my feet upon one of the less sharp rocks.
The face was rock covered in moss and other weedy greenery, however, in the crevices and open sections that were close enough to see were trees and plants that were beautiful and luscious. I was on the shoreline, my feet being lapped at by the multicoloured water.
I took a step forwards to explore the mountain, a small trail seemed to guide the way upwards. As soon as I took a step a great pressure pushed against my effort. By feet pressed into the rocks painfully and I struggled to not collapse into the water behind me.
I tried to channel my qi, enhance my strength and with full preparation I was able to take a single step forwards. I stopped and panted, my legs were screaming at me and I was almost entirely spent of qi, from just one step. Suddenly the mountain that I could not even see the top of seemed even taller, the forests that begged for exploration no longer provided a location for a calming stroll but were instead torturous beacons of progress.
I had not designed the technique to be easy, the opposite was true. I was confident in my ability to cultivate, as anyone would be after doing the process as many times as I had. Redemption’s Rose represented the pinnacle of my work, I was simply not expecting it to show it’s difficulty in such a way.
Unnerved and even a little excited I stepped out of my dantian to see if I had any hours left to get some sleep. I’d only be able to replace sleep with meditation after passing both qi body and qi soul stages.
Elbe was drooling onto my shoulder, I craned my neck to look outside without disturbing her and thankfully it was still dark. I closed my eyes and fell asleep, hoping I’d be energised enough for the morning.
I woke up to gentle shakes. “Ms. Kilaeje is asking about breakfast,” she whispered.
“What are you waiting for then?” I asked jokingly as I swung myself out of bed, thankfully feeling well rested.
She pouted at me. “Nothing now…” I leaned across the mattress and gave her a quick kiss. “Mmm, that was a good breakfast.”
I laughed and we left the room, Ms. Kilaeje had set the table nicely, the kid was sat up too. I was a bit worried that it was too early for him to be out of bed but one look at the colour in his face told me he’d recovered enough for at least a meal at the table.
I ruffled the hair on his head softly. “They bounce back quick don’t they?” I laughed.
“He was running around the house like a lunatic this morning, I almost fainted with shock,” lamented Ms. Kilaeje. “But he convinced me to at least let him eat before he goes back to bed.”
“Rest is important,” I said to him, my hand still on his head. “As is listening to your mother.” I sat down to the sound of his mother’s laugh.
“Yessir…” he said. He was a little shy in front of El but he was quick to adapt to the new face, as kids were.
“Shall we?” Ms. Kilaeje asked as she took the last spot and only started to eat once we’d all had our first mouthful.
Before long, it was just El and I. We were walking to where she thought she remembered the entrance of Tressy being.
“So we both thought of joining the sect then?” said El.
“Yes, me as a boisterous young master.” She blushed. “You as my servant.”
“Servant!?” She protested. “Why can’t I be a disciple too?”
“Because you cultivate Hall of the…
“Mountain God’s techniques, I get it. But, will they let me in if I’m a servant?”
“Probably not under normal circumstances.”
“The circumstances won’t be normal?” She inquired.
“Not if I have anything to say about it.” She stopped and grabbed my arm.
“Let me in on the plan will you? I’m not going in without knowing it.”
I raised my hands to quell her. “Alright, I was just going to surprise you a little but sure, I’ll tell you. I’m going to best one of their disciples in a duel of their own style. In order to make sure they allow a duel to happen, I’m going to piss them off.”
“That’s a terrible plan…”
“Coming from the girl who got pissed off and beaten in a duel.” She blinked a few times in shock as she remembered the circumstances in which we had met.
“Fair point, let’s piss ‘em off real good.”
“Oh, I’m sure we will,” we chuckled comically. It was a ridiculous idea but she was causing inside me the incessant desire to cause mischief.
