Meng Li was stunned into silence by the cruelty of the world. How come people, who are naturally pure and innocent while they're babies, can turn into such evil adults? Why do people think that other people's lives are worth less than their power? Meng Li pondered. However, such deep thoughts inevitably led to other, more darker thoughts. Why do I think that people's lives are worth more than my own power? Are those demonic cultivators on to something?

Fortunately, before Meng Li could go far down this rabbit hole of dark thoughts, he was awakened by Ye Jian.

"Alright, let's go. You're all healed, right? Then seal your cultivation." Ye Jian called out. Meng Li was startled awake. Now, as he thought back to his thoughts in that moment, it was like someone else's thoughts were replacing his own. Why are other people's lives worth more than my own power?! Because people's lives are important! I will not use other people's misery to strengthen myself! I will kill only my enemies! I won't become like those demonic cultivators, slaughtering the innocent for their own gain!

Meng Li's eyes became unusually firm at this moment, and his back straightened. Ye Jian looked at him with some surprise, but he once again motioned him to reseal his cultivation and continue. Meng Li nodded back with a smile and quickly started creating the seals.

In a few minutes, his cultivation was once again back at the ninth layer of Qi Gathering. Ye Jian was standing a bit down the hill from him, looking impatient. Meng Li said nothing and merely nodded. Ye Jian smiled, turned back and started descending down the slope.

While descending, they restrained their auras like they normally did. Thus, it didn't take them long to encounter a beast - or at least for Ye Jian to point out one.

At first, Meng Li didn't realise what Ye Jian was pointing to, but suddenly, he saw it. It was a small bird - an owl, sitting on a thick branch hundreds of metres up. It was staring directly down at them, and when Meng Li met its' gaze, he was suddenly startled. The eyes he saw were unlike an animals - they contained intelligence akin to a human child. However, he could feel that the owl only had a cultivation of the sixth layer. Unfortunately, due to the fact that they completely restrained their aura, it chose them as its' prey. Somehow, the owl's perception was able to get past their lack of aura, and lock onto them as a tasty meal.

Meng Li was confused as to why Ye Jian pointed the owl out, until Ye Jian sent him a message.

"You see, some beasts have extremely strong perception and will be able to notice us. We, or at least you, want to gain experience, so a battle with a weak beast like this would be just a nuisance. When dealing with a weaker beast, the best choice is usually to just release a bit of your aura towards it." Ye Jian explained and proceeded to show what he meant. Meng Li sensed that he released a sliver of his aura and sent it towards the small owl, which was already silently flying towards them. When it was about a hundred metres away, it reached the sliver of aura, and Meng Li could see in real time as the eyes of the owl shrunk violently as the owl practically fell out of the sky. A split second later, it started flapping its' wings once again, this time trying to get away from them.

It was quite a funny sight to behold, and Meng Li actually cracked a smile. He wanted to experiment a bit, so he let out his aura as well, trying to imitate the way Ye Jian did it. It was clumsy, but he managed - he sent a sliver of his aura in the direction of the owl to scare it a bit.

It reached the owl quickly, and when the owl sensed it, it started flapping its' wings even faster to escape. Although it was a bit cruel on his part, Meng Li wasn't too guilty. After all, the owl wanted to eat them, and if they were weaker, it definitely would have. Thus, scaring it a bit wasn't at all too much - Meng Li wouldn't feel guilty even if he killed it out right.

This encounter was merely a small stop on their way, and Meng Li continued onwards with Ye Jian leading the way. The next encounter was strangely enough, another owl - this time strong enough for their liking, at the ninth layer of Qi Gathering. Unfortunately, they didn't manage to ambush it this time, as the owl spotted it seconds after Ye Jian alerted Meng Li. They could only fight it out right.

In the end, Meng Li emerged from the fight with medium injuries. They weren't life threatening at all, but they were painful. Ye Jian ended up without as much of a scratch, and the only evidence he was in a fight was the blood on his sword. Meng Li noted incredulously that Ye Jian wasn't even short of breath!

After this, Meng Li decided to stop comparing himself with Ye Jian when it came to fighting. It was like comparing an elementary student's drawing with Van Gogh... There wasn't even a ground for comparison, they were so far apart.

Meng Li had unsealed his cultivation shortly to quickly heal, and resealed it again a few hours later. Then, he continued on.

During the next week, Meng Li had undergone nearly constant life or death battles, and his experience grew. An unexpected gain he had from being exposed to Ye Jian's killing intent was a bit of resistance towards killing intent - he guessed that if he were to face the panthe... Big cat's gaze after Ye Jian's killing intent, he would be stunned for about half the time.

The constant battles also caused his experience to skyrocket - from practically zero to... a higher level. In pure skill alone, he could be compared with regular soldiers. However, this didn't account for his true battle ability - even though he was nowhere near Ye Jian's level, he would be able to deal with beasts at his level with only some light wounds now.

Right now, Ye Jian and Meng Li made their first stop after they had slain a giant boar, eating its' meat. Although they were both at a level where they didn't need to eat, it didn't mean that they couldn't. And it turns out that beasts' meat has extremely good flavour, along with having benefits if consumed regularly. After finishing eating, Meng Li spoke out.

"Your parents will emerge in a few more days... Should we stay here and train, or return already? I don't know about you, but I'm actually pretty tired by the constant battles." Meng Li found that even if he could stay awake cultivating for years on end, he would quickly get tired if he was doing something mentally exhausting - and battles were extremely mentally exhausting. Even though cultivating for a few hours could mostly get rid of the exhaustion, it would return stronger the next day. Thus, he was in need of some good old fashioned sleep.

"Hmmm... We should probably return." Ye Jian agreed. He, too, was tired - even if he was at a level where he didn't require sleep in his previous life, his cultivation was incomparable to that.

Meng Li was relieved to hear him say so, and smiled slightly. He grabbed Ye Jian's shoulder, since they were sitting quite close, and teleported back.

The Jiang city appeared before their eyes. Meng Li had unsealed his cultivation in that short moment, returning to Qi Foundation Realm, and could once again fly. They appeared a few metres above ground, and Meng Li floated down quickly, before releasing Ye Jian's shoulder.

It was already dark, which was the reason Meng Li had teleported so close to the city. The guards wouldn't notice them appearing out of nowhere during the night, so why bother being careful?

Ye Jian quickly cleaned himself with Qi as Meng Li stood close. Spending so much time in the wild would inevitably make someone dirty, even if Ye Jian was able to avoid the blood splatter, any wounds, or even tearing his clothes.

Meng Li, on the other hand, had the white robes from his master - they were always clean, and somehow kept him clean too. They also had the miraculous ability of mending themselves. Their defence was pitiful, at the level of normal clothes, but after the fight, they always returned to their previous state, completely clean and without even a tear. Meng Li was once again thankful to his master for their existence.

Walking into the city was easy. Although the guards stopped them for a questioning, Ye Jian was once again able to lie his way through - or so Meng Li thought, until he caught a glance of Ye Jian slipping a few gold coins into the guards' hand. His eyes bulged, but Ye Jian motioned him to stay silent for a bit.

After they entered, Meng Li waited until they were out of the guards' hearing range before opening his mouth. However, Ye Jian stopped him in his tracks by explaining himself first.

"This is the fastest way to enter, so why shouldn't we. It's not like we're doing something illegal..."

Meng Li was confused. Indeed, why was he angered? It's not like he had to follow the law of this small city, or even this empire... He had his own set of mental rules, and as long as he wasn't breaking them, why worry? He would only worry about law if breaking it caused him some trouble down the line.

After reaching this conclusion, Meng Li felt as though he was released from some invisible chains holding his spirit. His mind felt clearer than ever, and he couldn't help but show a smile.

They quickly returned to their inn and passed by the stunned servants to return to their rooms, where Meng Li fell into a deep, long, dreamless sleep.
