Chapter 161: The Uninvited Guest

2 Comments / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

“Well, I should head back soon. If there’s anything, um… yeah. Write the information you want to convey on a paper and put it inside this empty wooden box. Leave it outside for me,” I said, handing Jinbi an unused wooden box. I urged Soleil to accompany me as we prepared to return to Agarta.

“Oh no! Without offering any hospitality, just returning like this…” Jinbi hurriedly tried to stop me.

“No, if someone sees me meeting with the villagers here, it will only complicate matters. I am an uninvited guest. Once I’m done with my business, I’ll leave promptly,” I explained. The villagers called out my name one after another. Amidst that, I raised my right hand and nodded as I walked towards Illymo, as if I were a candidate in an election.

“Well then!”

Soleil and I boarded Illymo and ventured into the forest. After a while, Cradle, the spirit of the forest, appeared.

“Lady Soleil, Lord Linos, I shall guide you.”

“Thank you, Cradle. Can you guide us to the summit?”

“Of course.”

Once again, the spirits’ signposts illuminated within the forest. We followed them to reach the peak of Mount Banzabi.

Before long, we arrived at the summit and looked down at the Ilbeji River. As expected of a high-altitude mountain, from here, the border between Agarta and Hideita was clearly visible.

“Alright, Illymo, I leave it to you to take us to the capital.”

“Leave it to me.”

Illymo spread its wings wide and soared into the sky.

We followed a path north along the Ilbeji River. In the distance, I could see the Juka Mountain Range and the Lunoa Mountain Range. Even though it was already April, there was still snow remaining, creating a beautiful sight when viewed from above. As I thought that the snow must be slow to melt due to the high altitude, a tremendous impact struck my entire body, and I was thrown into the air.

“Master!”

As I rapidly descended towards the ground, I heard Soleil’s voice coming from above. I hastily tried to reinforce the barrier when the rate of descent suddenly slowed down. When I came to my senses, Soleil was clinging to me in mid-air, her wings flapping. It seemed that Soleil had used her back feathers to hold me.

We landed gently on the riverbank. Illymo followed suit and descended from the sky.

“Master, are you alright?”

“Yeah, thanks, Illymo. If Soleil hadn’t held me, I would have been seriously injured by now.”

“I was surprised when you suddenly fell from Illymo. I’m glad you’re not hurt.”

“Yeah, I suddenly felt an impact, and then… Ugh!”

Once again, I was hit by a strong impact and sent flying several meters. As I tried to stand up, I was hit again and sent flying.

“What… What is it? What’s… Gah!”

As I was blown away and lying face down, I received another impact on my back. Unable to bear it, I rolled around in an attempt to escape from the impact. Upon closer inspection, the spot where I had been lying was gouged out, leaving a small crater.

“Soft Barrier!”

As I stood up, I reinforced the thick barrier to absorb the impact. Furthermore, I applied an effect to the outer shell of the barrier that would create an incredibly adhesive force upon contact.

Immediately after, a small straw-like hole appeared in the barrier. It gradually approached my body but eventually came to a halt. As I tried to get a closer look at the tip of the hole, something enormous burst out from it and soared into the sky.

It was a gigantic dragon with light blue scales.

“A dragon…?”

I unintentionally let out a voice of surprise. The dragon slowly flapped the two wings on its back, hovering in the air as it gazed at me intently. I activated my Appraisal skill on this dragon.

…What is this? Is it a character encoding issue?… It seems like it has been intentionally altered. In any case, this suggests that the person can block the Appraisal skill. That means they possess considerable skills. I can’t let my guard down with this person.

The dragon in the sky let out a loud groan and emitted a dazzling light from its body. I quickly reinforced the highest-level barrier around myself, Soleil, and Illymo.

When the light subsided, a handsome young man stood before me.

“…A Barrier Level 2, huh? You’re quite cocky,” the androgynous voice of the youth addressed me.

“Well, it goes both ways, doesn’t it? Who the hell are you? Why did you attack me?” I replied.

The young man smirked and widened his eyes.

“I am the Dragon King. Give me back my Shinjo!” he declared.

“Shinjo? Ah, you mean Fairi? That’s my pet. It’s not like I stole her. She willingly became my pet. Your choice of words is rather unpleasant, isn’t it? It’s not a matter of returning or not. Listen to what people say,” I retorted.

“I see no other choice. Then, there will be no further discussion!”

The man who called himself the Dragon King instantly closed the distance between us and appeared right beside me. His right hand had already transformed into a dragon’s claw, and he attacked me with his sharp claws. However, his claws were blocked by the barrier. The Dragon King’s movement momentarily stopped. Seizing that moment, I retrieved the Holy Sword from the Infinite Storage and swung it toward his arm.

Kiiiiing!

A beautiful, bell-like sound resonated. I should have definitely cut the Dragon King’s arm, but his arm was completely unharmed. The Dragon King flew back up into the sky, putting some distance between us.

“It’s futile. My body is protected by sacred scales. Any attack is meaningless! Fufufufu,” the Dragon King laughed defiantly. Wait, didn’t the Holy Sword have exceptional sharpness against evil beings? Does that mean it doesn’t work on the Dragon King’s scales? Thinking so, I quickly switched the sword to “Onikiri.”

“Oh, such a menacing sword. Fufufufu. Let’s see if it can cut me… Give it a try!”

The Dragon King lunged at me once again. Without hesitation, I struck him with Onikiri from above.

The Dragon King intercepted Onikiri’s slash with his left arm. Again, it seemed to have no effect on him. I noticed that his right arm was now burning bright red.

“Disappear!”

Flames erupted from the Dragon King’s left arm and engulfed me. Instantly, I was enveloped in a barrier of crimson flames.

“Master!”

Soleil’s scream echoed. The Dragon King reacted to her voice.

“Hmm? Are you… a Sylph? And… a Unicorn Pegasus. You’re accompanied by quite rare creatures,” he remarked.

“Is that so? I don’t think it’s that unusual, though,” I replied.

I stood completely unharmed. As the Dragon King turned to face me upon hearing my voice, his eyes widened.

“So, you endured my scorching flames… You’re not just an ordinary Barrier Master, after all?”

“No, I’m a Barrier Master at Level 2. But you shouldn’t let your guard down too much,” I warned.

“What audacity for a mere human to say that! Very well. It seems you wish to suffer and die,” he retorted.

With that, the Dragon King shrunk rapidly in size until he disappeared.

“I see. He was attacking while being almost invisible. Quite clever,” I muttered.

I reinforced the same “Soft Barrier” and prepared for his next attack.

In that moment, a shockwave ran through my barrier, causing cracks to form. Wave after wave of impact struck, further fracturing the barrier. Just before the barrier was about to shatter, the attacks finally stopped.

“Oh ho. Even with all that, the barrier still didn’t break… So you can handle Divine Barrier, huh? However, that barrier is already useless, isn’t it?” the Dragon King’s voice could be heard from somewhere.

“I didn’t expect you to freeze the adhesive parts and attack. Indeed, the Dragon King is not to be taken lightly,” I admitted.

To be honest, I was quite flustered by that attack. I reinforced the hardness of the barrier once again. This way, the barrier wouldn’t break, but I also couldn’t deal any damage to the Dragon King. Taking a deep breath, I retrieved “Kurotou” from the Infinite Storage. I sheathed the sword at my waist, assuming a stance for a quick draw.

“What are you planning? If you return the Shinjo peacefully, I will spare your life,” the Dragon King demanded.

“I’ve been telling you, Fairi willingly came to me. It’s not about returning or not. Are you dense or something? Well, I guess you are. You just can’t seem to understand,” I scoffed.

“Die!”

Closing my eyes, I utilized my Perception and Magic Detection skills to sense the Dragon King’s presence. Got it! The moment I thought so, I unsheathed Kurotou. With a dull sound of impact, I felt the sensation of cutting through something incredibly solid. The Dragon King let out a roar, transforming into a humanoid figure in the sky.

“What are you doing?! …If I get injured, what will you do?” the Dragon King exclaimed.

Hearing his words, I couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
