Chapter 173: Crimeana Theocracy

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

From the port of the Imperial Capital of the Lamaron Empire, sailing eastward for a week on a ship, you’ll arrive at a remote island in the vast sea. This island boasts a considerably large area and is home to a massive city with a population of approximately ten million people. Surrounding the island are sheer cliffs, and high walls are built along them. The city itself is divided into various districts, where the citizens’ food is produced, and their affections nurtured. Nearly the entire population of this country deeply shares a common doctrine, forging strong bonds among the people. It’s a sacred place, allowing only those selected from all over the world to reside within its confines.

The name of this country is the Crimeana Theocracy.

Several millennia ago, when the human race faced annihilation at the hands of demons, the goddess Aphrodite Crimeana emerged as a savior, using her exceptional healing magic to rescue the humans and ultimately put an end to the battle with the demons. Crimeana generously shared the knowledge and technology she acquired with the people, contributing to the development of the human race. Her most outstanding ability was her “Blessing” skill, which could dispel curses up to LV3. Therefore, she was recognized as the goddess who prevented the demonization of the human race. It is said that she ascended to become a deity at the moment of her passing, rising up to the heavens. As a result, in this country, Crimeana is worshipped as a goddess, and her will is continued, making it a nation that values knowledge and research.

On the other hand, this country established a doctrine based on Crimeana’s teachings, known as the Crimeana Religion. As the teachings of the savior from the demons, it was rapidly embraced by the human race and now has followers in countries all over the world. Moreover, many nations have adopted this religion as their state religion, including the Hideita Empire and the Lamaron Empire. In other words, it has grown into the largest religious organization in the world, both in name and reality.

The teachings of Crimeana are centered around the principle of “helping those who benefit us and eliminating those who harm us.” Of course, “us” refers to the human race, but over the millennia since its inception, this “us” has come to be interpreted as the “Crimeana Religion.”

At the helm of this theocratic nation is the Pope, Juvenile Cane. Already bald, his white beard is well-kept, and his complexion looks healthy, despite being over eighty years old. His stout and dignified figure makes it easy for many to mistake him for someone in their mid-fifties.

Always bearing a gentle smile, he treats people of all statuses with politeness and compassion, and there are no witnesses to him raising his voice or displaying anger. However, he is not only the Pope of the Crimeana Religion but also the head of state of the Crimeana Theocracy. Through churches established all over the world, he gains information that is more accurate and reliable than any other nation. This country is indeed the world’s foremost information state.

Controlling the hearts of the people, the nation, and the world’s information is Pope Juvenile Cane. Beneath his compassionate smile lies a brilliant and astute mind akin to an electronic computer.

On a sunny day in May, a slightly sweaty warmth filled the air as the ceremony known as the Jumauk took place in the capital of Crimeana, Aphrodite. A splendid banquet was held at the Pope’s residence, the Papal Palace, attended by the Pope and all the cardinals.

Only those recognized for their significant achievements are permitted to live in Aphrodite, while those who fall short are sent to various places around the world. Some spread the teachings, others heal and instruct the residents, while some take on the role of punishing those who deviate from the doctrine of the Theocracy. These decisions are determined every four years during the Jumauk, a sort of personnel evaluation, which determines who stays and who leaves Aphrodite.

On this day, it was a farewell party for those who were leaving Aphrodite. There was no sense of sorrow or defeat among them. They were individuals who had once been welcomed to the sacred land of Aphrodite. Even if they scattered to various parts of the world, they would be looked upon with envy by the church members.

On the other hand, among them, there were also young boys and girls. They were the ones born in Aphrodite and were leaving the capital for the first time. They were the children of the so-called privileged class and would be called back to the capital unless something extraordinary happened during the next Jumauk. Then, they would depart for another journey around the world, playing a crucial role in capturing nations and nobles, particularly as fervent followers of the Crimeana Religion.

The party concluded on a harmonious note, with the Pope offering his blessing and prayers to the attendees. Amidst the Pope’s gentle and warm prayers, everyone displayed a blissful expression. In contrast, two individuals stood apart, showing no emotions and maintaining poker faces. They were conversing in hushed tones even during the Pope’s prayer.

“Kuh… If only I could have received this blessing too…”

Speaking with a gnawed lip was an eight-year-old boy named Cassel. He was the great-grandchild of Demeter, the sister of the Pope. From a young age, Cassel had displayed extraordinary talent and earned the title of child prodigy. Next to him, a girl spoke in a gentle tone to comfort him.

“You shouldn’t say such things. Surely, Crimeana-sama will guide you without fail. This is her guidance for you this time.”

Taking a praying pose, the girl was Vielle, the Pope’s granddaughter. Now fourteen years old, she was renowned for her exceptional talents. Always wearing a compassionate expression and speaking with a soft manner, her eyes revealed a keen and razor-sharp intellect. Her analytical ability was likened to that of a razor.

Initially, both Vielle and Cassel were scheduled to be dispatched to the Lamaron Empire during this year’s Jumauk. Vielle was to become the wife of the Duke of Konig, a member of the imperial family, while Cassel was to be adopted by the emperor himself. However, just about a month ago, the Jumauk was suddenly postponed. While both of them were happy to stay in the capital, their true feelings were to leave for their assigned posts as soon as possible and guide as many people as possible to Crimeana-sama’s teachings and the path of righteousness.

As if sensing their feelings, during the prayer’s conclusion, while everyone was leaving, the two were summoned by the Pope.

“Both Vielle and Cassel, you feel disappointed about this matter, don’t you?”

“…,” Cassel was caught off guard, remaining silent. On the other hand, Vielle responded without losing her compassionate expression.

“Yes, to be honest, we were initially disappointed. However, I believe this is Crimeana-sama’s guidance. Surely, she will lead me to a place where I can further elevate myself.”

The Pope nodded in satisfaction.

“Vielle is right. The Konig-sama you were supposed to go to passed away in an unforeseen accident. It’s a sad event. He had a fervent faith in Crimeana-sama more than anyone else, so I’m also deeply saddened. In addition, the Lamaron Empire’s emperor, who was shocked by the news, is currently bedridden. It’s not surprising, as he lost his mother and now the Duke, whom he trusted the most. His grief can be understood. In other words, the Empire is in mourning. Thus, it wouldn’t be appropriate for Cassel to go there. Please understand.”

The Pope praised them with a soft smile as they both kneeled and bowed their heads quietly.

“Both of you don’t intend to wait until the next Jumauk, do you? If there’s a suitable assignment, I’ll grant you an exception to go.”

Hearing those words, both Vielle and Cassel looked up in surprise.

“Yes, yes, that’s fine. An exception… It must be the first one in about fifty years. You both have put in so much effort. This too must be Crimeana-sama’s guidance.”

Tears welled up in their eyes. The exception granted during Jumauk was, in a sense, equivalent to being selected as a candidate for the Pope. It was a clear manifestation of the Pope’s expectations for the two of them, and feeling that overwhelming emotion, they could do nothing but tremble with the impact of it.

After leaving the venue, a bishop approached the Pope and bowed respectfully.

“I apologize for disturbing you. Today, a request for an emergency Cardinal meeting was submitted by Imarni-sama.”

“Oh? An emergency Cardinal meeting… What could be the reason for that?”

“Yes. It appears that a cure for the devastating diseases, Kirisrei, Gaisha, and Luroans, has been discovered. Imarni-sama wishes to announce it to you, Your Holiness, and all the Cardinals.”

The Pope nodded with great interest.

“If Imarni says so, there can be no mistake. Very well, I grant permission for the meeting. It would be best to let as many people as possible hear about this. We shouldn’t keep such a significant discovery to ourselves.”

“Understood.”

The bishop respectfully withdrew from the scene. The Pope sent him off with a gentle smile and then slowly made his way to his room.

Little did he know that this announcement would lead to a massive uproar across the world.

As spring was coming to an end.
