Chapter 175: We, Who Know Nothing, Begin the Beach Season

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

From the cape of the fortress city of Galby, the entire Lamaron Sea can be viewed. The brilliant sunlight from the sun shines down on the sea surface, creating a beautiful scene. Looking out towards the open sea, two whirlpools come into sight. Majestic and powerful, these whirlpools give the beholders a sense of vitality. Ever since arriving in this town, Linos had been fond of this sight.

“Wow, the whirlpools are huge today!”

Every time I come to Galby, I am impressed by these whirlpools. It feels as if an endless power is emanating from the depths of the sea, making me feel more energized. Alright, let’s do our best today! Let’s keep going even through the night! That’s the kind of mood it puts me in. If possible, I’d love to see this spectacle every day.

Lost in such thoughts, I sense the presence of several men behind me. I don’t feel any hostility, so they don’t seem to be hostile towards me. I slowly turn around.

“I see the Agarta King, Linos-sama.”

Six men, all appearing strong and formidable, stood there. They were all dressed in flashy outfits, adorned with vividly colored clothes and accessories.

“Yeah, that’s right. I am Linos. And who are you guys?”

“Nice to meet you. I am Murol, the head of the Fishing Union in this Galby town. We, have a favor to ask of you, Agarta King, Linos-sama, and so we have come here to meet you.”

Murol and the others introduce themselves, kneeling and bowing their heads. I also kneel and bow my head, trying to be at their eye level.

“There’s no need to be so formal. What’s the favor you’re asking of me? If there’s something I can do, I’ll help. Please, tell me.”

“Thank you very much!”

With shining eyes, Murol begins to explain.

Originally, Galby was born as a fishing town. An abundance of fish was caught from the sea, and the town thrived. The first emperor of the Lamaron Empire also used the rich marine resources for trade and to strengthen the empire. In a sense, this town was known for its impregnable fortress status, but it also boasted the highest fish catch in the empire, serving as a bustling fishing port.

However, four years ago, whirlpools suddenly started to occur in the Lamaron Sea. Initially, they were small, but they grew larger with each passing day, reaching their current size. Moreover, what started as a single whirlpool eventually became two. As a result, the sea was always rough, and fishing boats could no longer be sent out. In the past few years, the fishermen managed to make ends meet by catching fish near the shore, but even that was reaching its limit. Furthermore, despite having a considerably large port in this town, no trading ships could come due to the rough sea conditions. On top of that, the empire was facing food shortages, and this town was trapped in a state akin to being under siege.

Murol and his group came to me seeking a way to break through this situation.

“Hmm… I don’t really know much about the sea…”

As I crossed my arms, I pondered. Murol and the others looked anxious and continued to speak.

“We understand it might be difficult, but we came here to consult with you. We heard that you have been restoring the fields of the empire using various medicines and spirits. We are not sure if the same methods apply to the sea, but we thought we’d discuss it with you.”

“Well, I’ll think about it.”

Saying that, I asked for Murol’s contact information and got to work on my tasks in Galby.

As night fell and I returned to the estate in the capital, I immediately shared Murol’s story with my family.

“Oh, that sea is going to be rough,” said Luala.

“Why’s that?”

“Because it’s the Lamaron Sea… If I remember correctly, that’s where Amphitrite resides…”

“Amphitrite…?”

“She’s the wife of King Poseidon.”

“What? Seriously?”

It is said that according to the story, Luala’s father, Poseidon, and his lawful wife, Amphitrite, had a grand love affair and eventually became a couple. This tale has become a fairytale, and when Rico was young, she loved the story so much that she would repeatedly ask the court ladies to tell her the story.

“It truly is a wonderful fairytale… The scene where Poseidon proposes, defying the opposition of the gods, still warms my heart when I recall it,” Rico says, her gaze wandering into the distance as if she’s lost in another world.

“Cough, cough. I’ve met King Poseidon myself, but I can’t imagine him being such a person in a pure love story. Well, it’s just a fairytale after all,” I comment.

“No, it seems to be true,” Luala replies promptly.

“Really?”

“Yes… From what I heard, at that time, my father was… still inexperienced in interacting with women…”

“Both of them were each other’s first love?”

“It seems so…”

“Well, then, it’s like me and Linos!” Rico exclaims with delight, the only one excited.

As I learn more, it turns out that although Poseidon was delighted to marry the woman he had longed for, once he became familiar with women, he began to show interest in others and started to take on concubines, leading to the current situation.

“My father is… peculiar in a way, very earnest,” Luala says.

“I can understand your father’s feelings to some extent. I can understand, but… that’s taking it too far,” I respond.

“I’m sorry.”

There’s an unexpected gloom in Luala’s voice.

“No, there’s no need for you to feel down. So, is it safe to say that the rough seas of the Lamaron Sea are caused by Amphitrite’s jealousy?”

“I believe so. She must be very angry.”

“If you think about it as the whirlpools symbolizing the swirling resentment within the heart of the sea queen… it does make sense that fish wouldn’t approach and fishing boats wouldn’t be able to get close…”

After that, we discussed countermeasures against Amphitrite, with Luala taking the lead. Normally, a priestess serving the sea god would offer songs (ballads) to appease her, but since Luala is the daughter of the detested husband, that might provoke the queen instead. However, Luala insisted on trying it as a last resort, so we decided to take her there once.

That night, when it was just the two of us, Rico whispered in my ear.

“I have figured out how Queen-sama can regain King Poseidon’s love,” Rico whispers.

“What do you mean, Rico?”

“She just has to love him more than any other concubine and be loved in return.”

“H-how do you do that?”

“It’s simple. Just don’t leave his side. Like this…”

Rico clings tightly to my body.

“No, Rico, this is…”

“Does Linos hate me?”

“Don’t raise your voice. Eril might wake up…”

“How do you feel about me?”

“I… I love you…”

“I love you too. If only King Poseidon and the others could be like us.”

“Yeah, that would be nice.”

That night, Rico didn’t let go of my hand until the sky started to brighten, keeping her body close to mine.

The next day, I teleported to Galby with Luala by my side. From the cape, the magnificent whirlpools were visible as always. Upon seeing them, Luala couldn’t help but exclaim.

“This… Such tremendous anger… It’s beyond my ability to soothe…”

“Don’t be scared, Luala. Just try it once.”

“Y-yes…”

Luala sings with all her might towards the whirlpools. She’s singing the classic heartbreak song I taught her. It’s a song with lyrics asking if it’s okay to kill someone if they steal the person you love. It’s quite challenging, but Luala is remarkable. She sings it flawlessly, and even her fist movements are perfect.

“…It seems to be no use.”

The whirlpools show no sign of weakening, and the sea remains violently rough.

“…It can’t be helped. Let’s think of another method.”

I mutter weakly. As I continue to watch the majestic whirlpools, I suddenly recall a song my father used to sing in the bath when I was a child. I find myself humming the song absentmindedly.

“It’s autumn… My lover has left me… I’m freezing in the cold… My love, please stay by my side… And let this farewell be just a joke…”

“Master… What a sad song…” Luala remarks.

“Luala, you won’t truly understand the depth of this song until you experience heartbreak. It’s still too early for you to comprehend,” I reply, mumbling cynically while gazing at the sea.

“Yes, it’s still too early… But I totally get it though,” Luala says.

“Hey, what are you suddenly talking about, Luala?”

When I turn around, there’s a young girl, about elementary school age, dressed like a Heian-era court lady, standing there.

“…Who are you?”

“It’s you, isn’t it? You were singing just now. Your song resonates with my feelings. It really healed me,” she says.

“…Um, who are you exactly?”

“I’m Amphitrite. But you can call me ‘Tori-chan.'”

“Wait, are you… King Poseidon’s…?”

“Yes, that’s right. I’m his wife. But he went to other women’s places. I felt lonely. Frustrated. Resentful. So, I decided to vent my anger by wreaking havoc in the sea next to where he resides.”

“…I’m… terribly sorry. Even though it’s about my father… I apologize…”

Luala is kneeling down, bowing and apologizing.

“Who are you?”

“I am Luala, the 217th daughter of King Poseidon.”

And then, Luala reports the current state of King Poseidon, apologizing numerous times.

“Queen-sama, if you wish, I can convey your feelings to King Poseidon through Luala. However… I don’t believe his preferences will change. If it’s alright with your feelings being settled, we want to do everything we can. The people of the sea are suffering. It would be greatly appreciated if you could calm the sea…” I explain.

Amphitrite closes her eyes and contemplates silently.

“I was never popular. But because you showed me such a lovely song, I’ve decided to open up the sea.”

She murmurs sadly.

“Thank you very much. Since it’s a rare opportunity, Queen-sama, let’s have lively festivals on the sea a few times a year. We’ll offer delicious offerings. I’m not very good, but we can offer songs and play music. How does that sound?”

“Yeah, that sounds nice. It should keep me from feeling lonely.”

“Then, let’s do that!”

And so, the whirlpools disappear, and the sea regains its calm in Galby. The fishermen are overjoyed and can finally go fishing after several years. They hold festivals on the sea to express their gratitude to the sea queen, every time the seasons change.

However, Linos and the others were unaware. Little did they know that this sea, and this harbor, would later become the stage for tragedy…
