Chapter 185: Before the Battle

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

In the vast ocean, a single ship comes into view. It is a massive vessel flying the flag of the Hideita Empire, slowly advancing across the sea. In this world, there are few countries capable of constructing such colossal ships. The sheer grandeur of this ship alone is enough to give a glimpse of the might of the Hideita Empire.

On board this ship are King Linos of the Agarta Kingdom, his beloved wife, the sheep beastwoman Meirias, and the Pousehia, Chiwang, and Roni. From the Hideita Empire, there are several members, including the Director of the Imperial University’s Medical Research Institute, Robert, and a few of his subordinates. Additionally, from the Niza Principality, Pitan, the disciple of the Dwarf King, and his subordinates are also on board. In total, a group of fifteen people are sailing on the ship.

“Finally, it’s in sight…”

Those words are uttered by Vairus, the younger brother of the Hideita Empire’s Emperor.

“Yes, we should arrive in half a day from now.”

“Ten days on this ship have been quite tiresome.”

“Well, seasickness is unavoidable.”

“If it weren’t for your recovery magic, and the medicine from Lady Meirias, I wonder what would have become of us by now.”

“You should have stayed in the capital, considering His Majesty’s orders.”

“Well, there’s nothing we can do about it. I entrust you to do your best too, Your Highness.”

“Yes, leave it to me.”

As Vairus and I chat amicably, I recall that two days ago, the ship was quite rocky, and the researchers suffered from seasickness. However, we had no issues at all. I used healing magic and had Mei create seasickness recovery potions, which I administered to them.

Contrary to my initial belief that there wouldn’t be much to do during a sea journey, the researchers have been engaging in discussions and study sessions from morning to night regarding the current problem. Being someone with no understanding of such scientific matters, I have spent my days fishing to pass the time. Back in high school, I often resorted to sleep study during math and science classes, so I haven’t retained any knowledge in those areas. I secretly regretted not studying more, but that’s something I’ll keep to myself.

At night, we would teleport back to the capital’s mansion to rest. Chiwang and Roni, who accompany us, also stay at the mansion. Just as we sent the Catfolk, Willis, who we had been harboring in the mansion, to the beastman village in Agarta, we received Pitan and his subordinates from Niza in exchange.

Roni seems to prefer the meals at the mansion so much that she barely eats breakfast and dinner on the ship, opting to eat leftovers from dinner at the mansion and then heartily devour breakfast before returning to the ship. Peyris kindly accommodated her request and prepared separate meals for her, which was quite a burden. Nonetheless, she greeted her with a smile, handing her sandwiches for a late-night snack and enthusiastically cooking steaks for her in the morning, so that’s a relief.

With all that, we finally arrived at our destination – the capital of the Crimeana Theocracy, Aphrodite.

“…Which country is this one again?”

The person with his head in his hands on the desk is Bishop Kohreshi. Despite it being the day before the public question-and-answer session, the arriving delegations show no sign of stopping. He had assumed that apart from the Agarta, Niza, Hideita, and Lamanon delegations, there would be a few more from nearby countries, at most reaching a hundred people. However, upon investigation, it turned out that delegations from distant countries were also arriving, and they were carrying the invitation letters he wrote. He was convinced that King Linos had schemed something, but now he was overwhelmed with dealing with the delegations.

As they represent their respective countries, they cannot be treated carelessly. Consequently, the originally planned guesthouse couldn’t accommodate them all, and they had to hurriedly arrange other hotels.

In the end, there were delegations from 41 countries, consisting of over 300 individuals, who had arrived in Aphrodite. Additionally, even though they weren’t invited, there were many citizens and students who came, causing chaos at the port. And now, news just arrived that a delegation from the Sandanji Kingdom had also arrived.

“Damn it… King Linos of Agarta… What kind of tricks did he use? Ah, that Agarta king has yet to arrive. He’ll probably be followed by the delegations from Hideita, Niza, and Lamanon. If that happens… Argh, how vexing.”

Regret over taking on this task all by himself in order to gain the Pope’s trust fills Kohreshi’s heart.

Originally, the question-and-answer session was planned to be held in the lecture hall of the medical research institute, but due to the unexpectedly large number of attendees, they had no choice but to use the grand cathedral. Despite such unforeseen circumstances, the Pope continued to wear a gentle smile, agreeing and comforting Kohreshi with kind words, which was at least some solace for him.

The question-and-answer session is scheduled for tomorrow. Lost in his preparations, Kohreshi’s room is visited by a young bishop.

“Excuse me.”

“I’m busy right now. What is it?”

“Just now, a ship from the Hideita Empire arrived at the port. King Linos of Agarta and the representatives from the Niza Principality are also on board. The Lamanon Empire has focused all its efforts on domestic recovery, so they decided not to send a delegation.”

“…I see. Alright then, guide them to the Pope’s palace.”

“Well, actually…”

“What is it? Speak up quickly.”

“They plan to stay on the ship tonight and will directly head to the question-and-answer session from there. It’s a message from King Linos.”

Kohreshi clicks his tongue.

“Well, fine. If King Linos says so, let it be.”

“Yes, understood.”

“…Really… they don’t even care about our side…”

Muttering to himself, Kohreshi shifts his focus to the preparations for the following day.

In the night, alone in the deserted dining room of the capital’s mansion, Linos is humming while working on something at the table.

“…Master.”

“Ah, Mei. You should go to sleep first. We have an early day tomorrow.”

“What are you doing?”

“Oh, I’m sticking together small pieces of paper.”

“What are they for?”

“Hmm? Memo papers.”

“Memo papers…?”

“Yeah. It’s not anything fancy, but it’s easier to work with when they’re stuck together like this.”

“I’ll help.”

“Sure, that’s fine. I’ll be done soon. Once the rice dries, it’ll be finished. It’ll be all crispy in the morning.”

“I feel somewhat sorry…”

As the work continues, Mei feels a sense of guilt.

“It’s not like it’s Mei’s fault. I just don’t understand, so I’m going to ask questions. That’s all. Mei, you’re not satisfied either, right? Just ask your questions boldly. Neither you nor Roni are wrong. I might not know the details, so I might not be able to offer much input, but I’ll do everything I can to support you. It’s alright, Mei. Speak your mind freely.”

Mei clings to me silently.

“Do you want to take a bath?”

“…Yes.”

Mei murmurs in a small voice.

Outside the grand cathedral in the capital of the Crimeana Theocracy, Aphrodite, people overflowed. The cathedral could accommodate two thousand people, but with delegations from various countries, members of the Crimeana Theocracy’s medical research institute, church officials including the Pope and cardinals, the seats were quickly filled. Only a very few ordinary citizens were allowed entry.

In addition, the movements and words of Linos, who is rumored to be able to hear the voice of the Supreme God Crimeana and whether he is an apostle or a notorious villain, have drawn the attention of the residents of this city. As a result, devout followers of the Crimeana faith among ordinary citizens flocked to the cathedral to catch a glimpse of Linos. The chaos was further intensified as researchers and students who had managed to enter the country mingled in the vicinity of the venue.

Amidst this, Linos and the others rode in a carriage sent by the Theocracy, heading towards the grand cathedral.

The curtains were about to rise on the battle with the Crimeana Theocracy.
