Chapter 203: But of all kids, mine…

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

“In our country… Kshanamina is considered our friend, our family, and our children. It is forbidden to capture them recklessly and deprive them of their freedom,” said King Sandangi’s aide, said with a pained expression. According to the research we conducted beforehand, the development of this country seemed to be closely tied to the dogs known as Kshanamina. (T/N: No clue on the name of the dog but I should have a better one or recommendations are welcome)

In the early days of this nation’s founding, people put in tremendous effort and labor to develop the country. They gradually expanded the city based in an oasis within the desert, and during that time, the dogs fearlessly confronted the monsters that attacked alongside humans. Since then, it became a custom in this country to treat dogs as friends and family.

This philosophy was deeply ingrained, and there were no facilities like dog euthanasia centers as seen in Japan. This was because there were no cases of abandoned dogs or neglectful owners. If for some reason an owner couldn’t keep their dog anymore, there were government-run shelters for them. In that sense, Sandangi was a country overflowing with animal welfare.

According to the information compiled by Mei and the others, there were two infection pathways, and both were linked to dogs.

The first infection pathway was linked to a dog kept at a flower shop in Sandangi. Five out of twenty people had been bitten by that dog. Strangely, it wasn’t because these people did something to the dog; they were all bitten suddenly, with one person stepping on the tail. Furthermore, one of the patients suffering from Kirisrei had been bitten while trying to protect the dog and subsequently developed the disease.

The second infection pathway involved a dog owned by a teacher. Four people were bitten by that dog, and naturally, the owner, the teacher, had contracted Kirisrei. This dog would bite people indiscriminately while out for a walk, and all those who were bitten developed the disease.

“Therefore, we need to first protect these two dogs and verify their conditions.”

“…In our country, we have specialized trainers who provide re-education for dogs that behave in such a way. It falls under the jurisdiction of the trainers, and there have been no cases where dogs were captured against the king’s orders.”

Nic was clearly agitated, his eyes darting around. While the king’s orders were absolute, it seemed that he couldn’t accept the reality of capturing dogs.

“I can’t believe it. Kshanamina, who has prospered alongside us, could be the cause of the detestable Kirisrei.”

“King Sandangi, or rather, I’ll address you as Nic. Nic, aren’t you interested in saving this country? The possibility presented by Pousehai suggests that if left unchecked, both dogs and people could succumb to Kirisrei. As the king of this country, I don’t think you can ignore it.”

He closed his eyes and thought for a moment, then slowly opened them.

“Someone.”

“Are you calling for me, Your Majesty?”

“Fetch Glawans.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

After issuing a brief command to his attendant, Nic closed his eyes again. After a while, a sturdy man with a compact but muscular build and tanned skin appeared.

“Glawans.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Urgently locate the Kshanamina from the flower shop in Sandangi and the Kshanamina from the teacher’s house. They have bitten people, and they are likely under the care of one of the trainers.”

“Your Majesty, may I inquire about the reason?”

“The possibility exists that these two Kshanamina may be infected with Kirisrei and could potentially infect people.”

After a brief pause, Glawans, the muscular man, burst into laughter.

“Ahahaha! Your Majesty, what are you saying? Kshanamina infected with Kirisrei? That’s impossible. Kshanamina are our friends, family, and our children. Why would we spread a contagious disease that would lead to our destruction?”

“Well, there’s a possibility.”

“Your Majesty, have you…? There has never been such a thing here.”

“Glawans… This is an order.”

Tears glistened in Nic’s eyes. In response, Glawans looked surprised, his eyes widening.

“I can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it. I don’t want to suspect our friends, family, and children. But we mustn’t allow Kirisrei to spread in our country again. We mustn’t. Glawans, please understand.”

Glawans lowered his head slowly and quickly left the room.

After a while, Glawans returned with a white dog in a cage. Upon seeing this, Nic spoke.

“What about the other one?”

“He… The other one has already passed away.”

“…”

While Nic was speechless, the Pousehais attempted to observe the dog. However, the dog was highly agitated and began thrashing inside the cage. At that moment, Glawans began chanting something, and the dog’s head lowered as if it were being restrained. However, the dog continued to growl menacingly. Glawans sighed and spoke.

“This Kshanamina was in an agitated state. That’s why it bit people.”

“I see. Linos-sama, is this the dog?”

Chiwans nodded in agreement with Glawans’s words and sought my opinion. I proceeded to appraise the dog.

“Yes, there’s no mistake. This is the dog. …This dog, too, has been bitten by another dog.”

As I provided this explanation, Roni observed the cage surroundings, pacing around.

“Could it be in an agitated state? It’s drooling, and its eyes seem vacant. Am I the only one feeling a sense of madness?”

“Well… it does give off an aura of being possessed by something.”

Mei also watched with an eerie expression. However, Glawans dismissed our conversation.

“It’s because he was suddenly summoned by strangers. He has a strong temperament. Anyone would get angry when locked in a cage without doing anything and brought to a place like this.”

Roni stood up and turned her gaze toward Glawans.

“I see, that may be true. However, all the people bitten by this dog have so far developed Kirisrei. We’d like to examine him once.”

Glawans furrowed his brow and glanced back in Nic’s direction. Nic nodded silently.

“Kshanamina is our friend and family. We won’t tolerate any rough treatment.”

Glawans declared this to Roni and the others and hastily left the scene. Pousehai then approached the dog again.

“Now, how can we transport this dog without causing harm…”

“I will create a barrier.”

I said this and enclosed the dog, along with its cage, within a barrier, inducing a deep sleep effect.

“Hmm? It’s not falling asleep?”

Normally, the sleep effect would take hold, but it seemed to have no effect on this dog. I increased the effect to induce a stronger sleep. After a while, the dog’s growling ceased, and it finally fell into a deep slumber.

“It seems he was in quite an agitated state. This is the first time I’ve had to apply this much effect to put a dog to sleep.”

“King Agarta… are you…”

Nic was wide-eyed and surprised.

“Oh, my main profession is actually a barrier mage. I can manage to set up decent barriers, you know?”

“Barrier mage…”

“A good teacher, a good master, and a good sister have blessed me, allowing me to become skilled at creating the barriers I desire… But ideally, we would live in a world where barrier mages aren’t needed, right?”

Nic exclaimed in response to my statement.

“What are you saying, King Agarta? Barrier mages are the most essential skill in protecting a king. It’s inconceivable that they won’t be needed. In fact, I envy you, who possess barrier skills.”

“Well… it’s a convenient skill, but I’d rather… live in a world where kings and everyone else don’t constantly face life-threatening situations.”

To my statement, Nic expressed her surprise.

“What are you saying, King Agarta? For us royalty, being targeted by others is almost a duty in a way.”

“I see. There’s that perspective too.”

“Linos-sama, shall we get going soon?”

Roni urged, holding the enclosed dog. I nodded quietly, bowed to Nic, and then left the room with them.
