Chapter 229: Return

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

“…Well then, I’ll be going.”

“Yeah, take care.”

Under the clear, summery sky, thousands of Crimeana faithful had gathered in Agarta’s barrier village. Finally, on this day, they were setting out for their homeland. Linos and the others had come to bid them farewell.

Before him stood Vielle. Her health had returned, her figure had filled out, and she had regained her former beauty as a young girl. Perhaps, she had even started to exude a slightly more mature aura, making her seem even more beautiful than before.

With a beautiful smile on her face, she was saying her farewells to Linos. Over the past few months, she had persistently negotiated with the believers who had taken refuge in the forest, as well as those infected by Luroans who had adamantly refused treatment, finally succeeding in persuading them.

The believers in the forest, led by Cassel, had readily agreed to Vielle and the others’ persuasion once they learned about the soldiers turning into Berserkers under his command, resulting in a brutal death, and his subsequent escape, leaving the villagers behind. On the other hand, the most challenging ones were the believers infected by Luroans. They considered Vielle a traitor and not only refused to listen to her but also locked themselves in their rooms.

It was Mei who had interacted with these believers. Along with the staff of Agarta’s medical research institute, she delivered meals and clean clothing to them every day and worked tirelessly on Luroans’s healing. Initially, they faced interference and abusive language, but Mei and the others did not waver and continued to support them daily. Not only that, they improved the village’s soil and, with the cooperation of the spirits and Soleil, worked on environmental improvements in the forest.

The initially stubborn believers, whenever Mei visited, witnessed the mold caused by condensation gradually disappearing and the environment improving, which made them marvel at her mysterious power. Day by day, they gradually opened their hearts to the beautiful institute member who visited them and took meticulous care of them. This was Linos’s idea, and having the institute members wear uniforms proved to be effective.

These uniforms were what is known as a nurse’s uniform, consisting of a navy blue one-piece dress with a white apron and a cap. Furthermore, the one-piece dress had a mini skirt, a costume that would undoubtedly be overwhelmingly popular among Japan’s middle-aged men. Naturally, Soleil was responsible for the design, creating a stunning costume that combined purity and sensuality with her outstanding sense.

In addition, for female believers, they deliberately dispatched affable male doctors rather than handsome ones. This kind of attentive care that reached the itch proved effective in opening the hearts of female believers.

Before they knew it, the doctors, nurses, and Mei, who provided them with appropriate instructions, had earned significant trust, and those infected by Luroans began to call her “The Return of Crimeana” or “Saint.” Finally, the believers started to respond to Vielle’s persuasion.

In this way, as the cohesion of the believers began to become visible, Vielle decided to return to the Holy Land. Linos had no objections, and promised food support for each believer returning to their homeland, finally welcoming that day.

The believers who had come from the Niza Principality had already departed, leaving only those returning to Aphrodite, the capital of Vielle and the others’ homeland. Vielle bowed deeply in gratitude to Linos, Mei, and the others who had come to see them off and shifted his gaze slightly. There, he saw several female believers surrounding Layfence, tearfully bidding farewell to the elderly general.

“I don’t want to part… I don’t want to.”

“Me neither, Lise, Akri, Simensa… It feels like cutting my own heart to say goodbye to all of you. But, as we discussed yesterday, you have a mission to help Vielle. It’s my wish. I’m entrusting her to you.”

“It’s Uncle’s request. We’ll gladly accept. But… but…”

“Lise… We will definitely, definitely meet again. Those who love each other will naturally be drawn together.”

“Uncle…”

“…What on earth are they doing over there? And General seems to be in good spirits.”

Linos watched the scene with a wry smile. Vielle also smiled wryly as she replied to Linos.

“Well, it’s a matter of romance, so I can’t interfere. They’ve helped us in various ways, so I’m grateful.”

“Yeah.”

Once again, Linos chuckled. These women were also returning to the Holy Land with Vielle. In a sense, they were spies from Agarta, and Vielle knew that, yet she kept them close. In other words, the women bidding farewell to Layfence were the liaisons between Vielle and Linos.

“Thank you so much for everything you’ve done. Please continue to support us in the future.”

Vielle said these parting words and departed.

The water level of the Ilbezi River had already dropped, and they were heading to Galby using water transport. Along the way, they saw the road they had created when heading to Agarta. Despite the river’s previous flooding, the road remained undamaged and in good condition, with supplies from Galby being transported one after another.

“The technological prowess of Crimeana is truly remarkable,” Vielle muttered softly on the raft. However, her eyes held a certain conviction, as if she were certain of something.

———–

In the capital of Crimeana, Aphrodite, where white buildings lined the streets, a strong sun’s rays created harsh reflections when they fell. In the midst of this glare, ships carrying thousands of faithful arrived at the city’s harbor.

As they disembarked from the ship, they seemed to emerge from within the light. The people of the city felt a kind of mystical sensation when they witnessed this scene. At the head of the people was Vielle, who had returned home, and she made her way to the Papal Temple.

After nearly a year, Vielle reunited with the Pope, Juvansel Cane, who, as always, maintained a gentle expression when he received Vielle.

“Welcome back, Vielle. I have read the letter you sent earlier, describing the events in Agarta. It was truly a challenging situation. I’m sorry to hear about Cassel… but I’m relieved that you returned safely. Yes, I’m truly relieved.”

While observing Vielle, the Pope nodded slowly. Despite making use of Crimeana’s excellent information network, the Pope had been unable to ascertain the situation in Agarta. Now, he wondered what had happened there, and he observed Vielle. She seemed to have lost some of her innocence and was becoming more like an adult woman. Above all, her eyes were different from the Vielle he knew.

“For several months, we received reports that most of the faithful who were supposed to be dispatched couldn’t land due to the flooding of the Galbi River… We did our best to find ways to provide relief, but it didn’t go well. You’ve endured the harsh conditions and overcome the Agarta winter. Furthermore, you returned safely despite the outbreak of a contagious disease called Luroans. Thank you for your hard work. Thank you. Now… it’s early after your return, but could you please tell me what happened in Agarta in detail?”

Upon hearing that voice, Vielle raised her head and looked at the Pope.

“Before that, Your Holiness, I have something I’d like to ask.”

“What is it?”

To Vielle’s unexpected reaction, the Pope appeared surprised with a puzzled expression.

“In the teachings of the Crimeana Faith, there is a passage that says, ‘Those who benefit us should be helped, and those who harm us should be eliminated.’ Would you please explain the meaning of this once again?”

The Pope opened his eyes slightly. He hadn’t expected such a question from Vielle. He had repeatedly taught her this since she was a child, and she had always believed it without question. Now, he wondered why she was asking about it again.

“Our Crimeana Faith teaches us to believe in the teachings of our Lord, Crimeana-sama. We are to help those who work for the Crimeana Faith and our nation with all our might, and on the contrary, we are to eliminate those who do not accept the teachings of our Lord or harm our nation. In the first place, our Crimeana Faith…”

“Thank you.”

Vielle interrupted the Pope’s words. This was something that had never happened before. The Pope was somewhat frozen in response to this unexpected turn of events.

“As I thought, Your Holiness, you are just as I expected. I’m relieved.”

Vielle smiled warmly at the Pope. With the same expression, she continued speaking.

“Your Holiness, I have a request. Please assign me to Crephalys.”

“Crephalys?”

“Yes. I couldn’t achieve anything in Agarta. Furthermore, we lost important talents for our nation, including Cassel. Despite that, I’m still alive thanks to King of Agarta’s help. I haven’t accomplished anything. Therefore, I wish to place myself in a more challenging situation. I want to spread the teachings of our Lord and improve myself.”

“What… That’s a commendable intention, but… Vielle, Crephalys is a nation that goes against the divine path. It’s a country that the Faith has targeted for suppression… Working there will come with many difficulties, and your own life may be in danger, you know?”

“Yes. I’m aware. I am prepared.”

“…I see. I understand. Please give me some time to think. I will inform you of my decision later.”

With that, the Pope left the room.

In the following days, Vielle received her wish and was assigned to Crephalys by the Pope. Moreover, most of those who had returned from Agarta with her passionately wished to go to Crephalys with her, so they were also dispatched there.

Normally, Vielle would have been disinherited and banished from the capital, Aphrodite, by the Pope himself. She had not achieved any results through Jamauk, despite her efforts. However, she did not cry, apologize, or cling to the Pope’s mercy. Instead, following the precedent set by others who had failed to produce results through Jamauk, she voluntarily expressed her desire to go to a remote region. Furthermore, she was volunteering to work in a dangerous area that went against the Faith.

This offer was frankly unexpected for the Pope, but through this conversation, he had acknowledged that Vielle still had value to use.

In this way, there was no need to punish his own granddaughter, and he could accept her wishes. If she achieved results there, he could consider her as a candidate for the Pope again. The bishops and the people would be satisfied. Moreover, those who had returned from Agarta were among the best in the Faith. If she took them with her, Vielle would not easily die. Instead, she might even weaken Crephalys. With these thoughts in mind, the Pope ordered Vielle to be dispatched to Crephalys, along with her companions who had returned from Agarta.

Several days later, the ship carrying Vielle and her companions set sail from the harbor of Aphrodite once again. The Pope watched them depart with tears in his eyes. This would make him appear even more merciful in the eyes of the people. While thinking about such matters, he contemplated the future of the Faith and the measures to be taken in the enigmatic country, Agarta.

He didn’t realize it. He didn’t see the terrifying plan hidden behind Vielle’s smile. He had already grown old.

Several months after bidding farewell to Vielle, an unexpected man appeared before the Pope. His body was emaciated, covered in countless wounds from his face to his body, and he looked half-dead at first glance. Yet, his eyes shone brightly.

Furthermore, the man’s left arm was missing.

The man who appeared before the Pope was Cassel, who had been missing.
