Chapter 230: Return (Part 2)

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Cassel stood there like a ghost, devoid of the refinement, intelligence, and the pride typical of a smart child that he had once possessed. All that remained was the gleam in his eyes as he glared at the Pope. From his demeanor, one could discern feelings of anger, hatred, and fear. However, those were the only emotions one could perceive; there was nothing else to be felt from him.

“Cassel… Is it really you?”

In astonishment at his dramatic transformation, the Pope involuntarily turned to the cardinals present around him. A cardinal, prompted by the Pope’s gesture, quietly explained to the Pope.

“Your Holiness!”

Within the spacious office of the Pope, Cassel’s outburst echoed.

“The Crimeana Church is on the brink of destruction!”

Such a statement left the attendees frozen in shock. However, the Pope, his demeanor still gentle, received his outburst without flinching.

“Agarta is a nation that defies the divine order! It is an absolutely unforgivable nation! Yes, the Agarta King declared himself the servant of the Demon Lord! But, but, what about the nations he visited on his way back to Aphrodite? I repeatedly warned about the danger of that country, and I pleaded for Agarta to send troops, but no one dared to confront that country or its king. What has become of our Crimeana Church? Why do we allow a nation that defies the divine order to exist right before us? They are disregarding the words of our Supreme God! Such a nation, its people, and even the servants of the dark gods must be annihilated! It’s an absolute necessity!”

The Pope slowly nodded and spoke to Cassel in a gentle tone.

“Cassel, what has happened to you? Until now, what have you been through?”

“I believe in the teachings of the Supreme God more than anyone else. The Supreme God’s teachings are the only path to true happiness for humanity. Nations and individuals who do not follow those teachings must be eliminated! Our Church must protect devout believers who uphold the Supreme God’s teachings and lead them to happiness. Agarta and the nations associated with it deny the Supreme God’s teachings and even drove devout believers to their deaths! I resisted, and I suffered this injury, losing my left arm. Agarta and its king are vile villains who have defied the divine order! Such people must be destroyed! However, the nations that have adopted the Crimeana Church as their state religion have shown no intention of taking action against Agarta. Is this acceptable for the Crimeana Church? Allowing this will lead to the Church’s downfall! The Church’s downfall means the defeat of the Supreme God! I cannot tolerate that!”

No one dared to interrupt Cassel as he spoke passionately, as if possessed by something. He continued to breathe heavily, perhaps due to his weakened condition, his shoulders rising and falling.

It was not surprising. How many times had he faced experiences akin to death? In the Agarta Forest alone, he had been devoured and torn apart by monsters thousands of times. He had been poisoned more than once. His body had been paralyzed. He had endured every imaginable suffering while steadily making his way toward Crimeana’s homeland. (T/N: No one survives being torn apart thousands of times)

It had been a journey marked by indescribable suffering, beyond what could be expressed by the word “hell.” Alongside the constant fear of monster attacks, he had faced hunger, thirst, and fatigue in a situation where there were no clear markers on the forest’s path. At times, he had even jumped from cliffs. Despite all of this, he had persevered, step by step, until he finally returned to Aphrodite with his life intact.

“Hell” couldn’t begin to describe the suffering he had endured. He recalled a time in his youth when he had been posted to a country, only to be betrayed, persecuted, and forced to barricade himself with a handful of faithful followers. He couldn’t forgive them—the nation that rejected the glorious teachings of the Supreme God, and the people who had persecuted his devout apostles. As he looked upon the approaching enemy forces, he filled his heart with intense hatred.

Laughter resounded in the office. The one laughing was none other than the Pope himself, a man known as the “Smiling Monster.” How many years had it been since he last laughed like this? The unexpected sight left everyone in the room stunned.

The Pope remembered. He remembered the time in his youth when he had been betrayed, persecuted, and forced to barricade himself with a few faithful followers in a country where he had been assigned. He couldn’t forgive them—the nation that rejected the glorious teachings of the Supreme God, and the people who had persecuted his devout apostles. As he looked upon the approaching enemy forces, he filled his heart with intense hatred.

With no food and on the brink of starving to death, he had administered an experimental potion to his followers. In response, the soldiers transformed into fearless warriors and attacked the enemy forces without fear of death. In the end, the enemy forces were utterly defeated, and their bodies lay scattered among the bodies of the faithful followers, who numbered only a fraction of the enemy’s forces.

The Pope remembered that scene vividly. And now, he found himself feeling a sense of nostalgia for the feelings he had experienced at that time—a feeling shared by Cassel.

“…I, too, have grown old, it seems. I never expected to be taught by Cassel. …Yes, you’re right. Our mission is to eliminate those who defy the divine order and assist those who follow it. Did we forget that? Perhaps I allowed those who defied the divine order to roam freely for too long.”

The Pope wore a satisfied smile as he directed a gentle gaze at Cassel.

“So, Cassel, what should we do to ensure the survival of Crimeana Church?”

Cassel remained silent for a moment, looking at the Pope. Then he spoke deliberately.

“First, we must eliminate traitors and those who defy the divine order within this Church and among the faithful.”

“Oh…? Are you saying there are traitors among this Church and the faithful?”

“Yes. There are.”

“And who are they?”

“First, Cardinal Leralance, Bishop Kraifelich, Bishop Alisgard, and… Sister Vielle.”

A commotion filled the office. No one had expected that Cassel would label the Pope’s granddaughter and the devoutly faithful Sister Vielle as traitors. With this statement, Cassel would likely face execution by the Pope. Everyone in the room thought as much.

“Even if I may ask for the reasons? Cardinal Leralance is your paternal uncle, after all. Are you suggesting you would eliminate your own family? The same goes for Sister Vielle.”

Contrary to their expectations, the Pope remained composed. Cassel continued speaking.

“Cardinal Leralance, despite being in the Hideita Empire, did not support us when we were in Agarta. Bishops Kraifelich and Alisgard were both liaisons to the Niza Principality and the Lamaron Empire, yet they provided no support to us in Agarta. How can we not call this betrayal? They did nothing to protect your special jimoque. These are grave sins. And… Sister Vielle… she has been enticed by the hands of the Agarta King, a servant of the dark gods.”

“W-Wait, Cassel-sama! You can’t possibly be suggesting that about Sister Vielle…”

One of the bishops couldn’t help but speak up. Cassel directed his sharp gaze at the bishop.

“Think about it! The faithful who tried to defeat the Agarta King were all killed. And I suffered these injuries. But what about Sister Vielle? Didn’t she return unharmed? Didn’t that seem suspicious to anyone? I believe that the reason I think the Church will fall is because of this. She was unharmed because she opened herself to the dark gods, was violated, and had her soul stolen! Why didn’t anyone see through this? …But the Supreme God has not abandoned the Church. The fact that I returned alive is proof of that. Despite being attacked by monsters and constantly facing danger, I didn’t lose my life, only my left arm. This must be the Supreme God’s will to save Crimeana.” (T/N: The fact you returned is because of plot)

“I see… Cassel, understood. We need to investigate Sister Vielle further, then. She has already departed for Klepharais Kingdom. First, though… can you investigate Cardinal Leralance, Bishop Kraifelich, and Bishop Alisgard?”

The Pope ordered Cassel with a gentle tone.

“Understood. However, Your Holiness, Sister Vielle will eventually betray us. When that time comes… and as for the Agarta King, I will never forgive him. I will definitely eliminate him.”

The Pope smiled with satisfaction.

“Very well. We’ll rely on you when that time comes.”

A month later, Cardinal Leralance, Bishop Kraifelich, and Bishop Alisgard were crucified in Aphrodite’s Plaza as traitors. It was Cassel himself who delivered the final blow to the three of them…

T/N: I don’t understand the intentions of the author here for keeping Cassel alive besides instigating a great war because there are too many loopholes in the story. Linos could have killed him with a lift of a finger. And hard to believe this kid is 9 years old, probably 10 now. Linos killed so many people without any concern and suddenly the one responsible for the miscarriage of Matokal gets away with it.
