Chapter 242: Dining and Drinking with Companions

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

On a sunny afternoon, Linos was visiting his grandmother’s mansion. Gon, who had been dumped at her place by Ferris and Luala, hadn’t returned since the night. In the mansion, Gon’s presence had seemingly been erased, and no one spoke of going to fetch him. Linos, reluctantly carrying an enormous amount of offerings, went to his grandmother to explain the situation, which finally led to Gon’s release.

Gon was in tears. He even declared that he wanted to quit being a servant to his grandmother and return to being a normal fox. According to him, he had endured unspeakable punishments, but all of it was his own doing.

“Gon, it must be hard to return to the mansion now. Let’s go to the Agartha guesthouse for a while. I have a meeting with King Maintia about visiting the pleasure district. Join us,” Linos suggested.

“Uuuuu… Alright,” Gon whimpered in agreement.

Thus, the two teleported to Agartha.

——–

King Maintia listened to the story and nodded in satisfaction. Then, he stared into the void with a distant look.

“Something on your mind?” Linos asked, curious.

The king smiled and replied, “I was just thinking if we could make our trip a bit more glamorous. We aren’t doing anything wrong, so there’s no need to sneak around. But if we’re too ostentatious, it could trouble the King of Agartha. I wonder if there’s a better way.”

“Well, Your Majesty,” Gon said, looking troubled, “Do you have any good ideas?

“Don’t worry about the cost. My father will cover everything.”

“King Maintia, the money you’re planning to use comes from the taxes paid by your citizens. Is it right to use the hard-earned money of your people for your entertainment?” Linos questioned.

Linos looked troubled. “By the way, I may be a king, but I do my own business. I earn my keep,” he added.

“Ha, King Agartha sounds just like my father. The difference is, you actually make your own money… Alright, I got it. I’ll borrow the expenses for my fun from you, King Agartha. I’ll repay it during my stay here. How’s that?”

“Do you have a way to repay it? You’re not planning to beg King Roscano, are you?” Linos asked.

“No begging. I have a plan. I like painting. I’ll sell my paintings to raise funds… Maybe I should change my name too. If I sell under ‘Maintia’, people might think they’re buying just for the name. Any good suggestions for a name? Oh, by the way, this is what my paintings look like.”

King Maintia, smiling, handed Linos his travel diary filled with sketches. Linos examined it for a while before raising his head to speak.

“These are incredible paintings,” he commented.

“Really? You’re the first one from Agartha to praise my work,” the king replied, pleased.

“I may not understand art, but these paintings feel alive, like I can even smell them. Gon, take a look.”

Linos passed the diary to Gon.

“Don’t you think you can almost smell the sweat?” Linos pointed out.

Gon looked at the drawing of women working in the fields in a village where the king had stopped to rest. He returned the diary, puzzled.

“I don’t quite understand, master. Usually, what laymen appreciate, experts find ordinary. It might be best to show it to an art dealer.”

“Is that so? Maybe you’re right… Alright, King Maintia. How about you try working as a painter here in Agartha? Even earning 1G by yourself is a good thing. Let’s see… How about ‘Echigoya’ for your artist name?”

“Echigoya…? Sounds good! It has an artistic ring to it. Perfect for using when I visit the pleasure district.”

Linos suggested the name sarcastically, but the king seemed genuinely delighted. Watching his reaction, Linos continued, “About the trip to the pleasure district, I’m not in favor of making it glamorous, but if you want it lively, I have an idea.”

The king eagerly awaited Linos’ suggestion.

“How about we do a ‘renjuu’ with the local carpenters?”

“‘Renjuu’? I’ve never heard of it, but it sounds interesting,” the king said, intrigued.

“Yes, it’s an old tradition from my hometown. I haven’t seen it myself, but it involves young men dressing in matching outfits and enjoying the pleasure district.”

“Dressing alike? Like a troop?” the king mused.

“Yes. We’ll tailor the outfits to fit the pleasure district’s vibe – noticeable but not vulgar, and something that excites the heart.”

“I like it! Let me help with the outfit selection.”

“You, Your Majesty?”

“Yes, I’ve wanted to visit the town’s shops. Just us, no need for attendants. Right, Patterson?”

Patterson, one of the king’s attendants, reluctantly bowed. King Maintia, satisfied with Patterson’s reaction, turned back to Linos.

“You mentioned involving the carpenters. Why them?”

“Most of Agartha was built by these carpenters, and they haven’t been properly thanked. It might be difficult for those with families, but the single men might enjoy this. Plus, they’re strong and can serve as your bodyguards. They’re also very reliable and helpful in a pinch.”

“King Agartha, you’re truly thoughtful. Can you tell me how many carpenters will join? I’ll start looking for outfits.”

“Now?”

“There’s still time before sunset. We need to decide quickly to make it happen.”

After the king left with his attendants, Linos summoned Syruse of Astes to discreetly guard the king and left the room himself. (T/N: dont remember who this is)

“Let’s stop by Gen’s place on the way back.”

“It’s almost dusk. He should be finishing up his work,” Gon remarked.

———

They teleported to the carpenter Gen’s worksite.

“That sounds fun!” exclaimed the gathered carpenters when they heard Linos’ proposal. The place buzzed with excitement.

“Hey, what about our wives?” one of them asked.

“Just wrap them around your finger!” another shouted.

“Why don’t we sing a song and go in high spirits?”

As the young men discussed enthusiastically, Linos intervened, “There’s a condition for this trip. You’ll accompany a young merchant, Echigoya, the owner of a painting shop. The pleasure district can be dangerous, so keep him safe from harm and avoid any disturbances.”

“No problem! We’re strong and can handle it. Leave it to us,” they assured him.

“Don’t start any fights. Just enjoy the food and drinks freely.”

Their excitement grew even louder. Then, Gen, the master carpenter, entered the room. A younger carpenter called out to him, “Hey, big bro! You’re coming too, right? There’s plenty of food and drink!”

Gen’s expression changed from surprise to annoyance. “Just finished work, and now more carpenter talk? Enough already!”

“Carpenter talk? What do you mean?” the younger one asked, confused.

“Isn’t there chiseling and piling work to be done?” Gen grumbled.
