Chapter 3 The Witch called Anna (Part II)

Roland swallowed the last piece of fried egg, took a napkin and wiped his mouth, “so you are saying that you are worried that the Witch Helper will hear the message that the witch did not die and hence will try to rescue her?”

“It is as your Highness said,” Barov stamped down, “they act hastily, it should be possible, if the witch was dead it would be bad enough, but now she is still alive! They are crazy, they even steal babies, I’m afraid that they will not let an already fallen comrade slip by. ”

Roland was confused, he always felt that there where something amiss. Why would the assistant minister and chief knight fell miserable about witches?

The woman who should have been hanged was a witch, right? Thin as if she would fall down when the wind blew. If she really had a terrible power, why would she need to stand still and get trampled on? (idiom to be taken advantage of) No, she would not get caught, according to the saying of the church, she was the devil incarnate, to be eliminate without trial, even the army would need to pay a heavy price when facing a witch. However, this devil was caught by residents of this border town, was tortured, even crucified but until now they had not seen a trace of that terrible power.

“How she got caught?”

“I heard that when the North Slope Mine collapsed, in order to escape she exposed her identity and was then caught by angry villagers.”

Roland thought, well, I have the impression that this happened the day before my occurrence of crossing through.

“How did she expose herself?”

“This is …… I am not sure,” the assistant minister shook his head, “the situation was very confusing, it could be that someone saw her using witchcraft.”

Roland frowned, “you have not thoroughly investigating this situation?”

“Your Highness, to resume the mining production is a matter of priority,” the assistant minister protested, “The revenue of this iron mine is half of the production of this town, and the prosecutors confirmed that someone at the scene was killed by witchcraft.”

“What kind of witchcraft?” Roland became interested.

“Like being melted, the head and a large half of the body spread out on the ground, seems like a burning down of a candle,” the minister had a look of disgust, “Your Highness, you don’t want to see such a scene.”

Roland started playing with a silver fork, thoughtfully. Historically, most of the victims of the witch hunt were innocent, tools for the church or a possibility for ignorant people to vent their anger, sure a small part belonged to their own fault. These people dressed themselves oddly, mixing all sorts of strange material, claimed that they could predict the future, the conclusion of life and death.

The truth is they did figure out some doorways, such as the use of flame reaction but then they claimed that they had gained the power of the gods.

To modern eyes, this were some chemical tricks, but at their time, that could easily be misrepresented as an incredible phenomenon.

As for melting people, the first thing Roland thought of, was a chromic acid potion.

But it would be trouble to prepare this stuff; you need to use up the body completely soaked corpse candle effect and far, the other strong acids even more to die.

Then how did she do it?

If she relied on alchemy, and that was rare in the territory of the chemist, if not ……

Roland thought until here, and said determined

“Take me to see her.”

“…… Such as…, sir, you want to see the witch?” Barov stood up in panic, knocked over the cup with the milk he didn’t drunk.

“Yes, this is a command.” Roland looked back and smiled at the assistant minister, he was now really thankful for the fourth prince unreasonable style.

He went to the door but suddenly paused, “Right, I have to ask, why would we use the gallows?”

“What?”

“Why would she be hanged? Shouldn’t witches be burned on a funeral pyre?”

Barov face seemed puzzled, “Isn’t it true? But she is not afraid of fire.”

*

It was only a small dungeon, this barren land could not afford too many prisoners, most criminals would face trial after a few days – either released or killed.

In addition to Barov following the Prince entering the dungeon were the chief knight, the prison warden and two guards.

The dungeon had a total of four levels; the walls were build out of hard granite blocks. It was Roland’s first time being at this place, he noted the deeper he got the more narrowed became the channels; the number of cells were also reduced. He thought, probably they dug a pit in form of an inverted cone first, and then build layer after layer out of stone.

This rough project would not have a good natural drainage system, the ground was wet, the muddy sewage was flowing down the stairs, down to the last floor.

Obviously the witch was at the bottom of the dungeon, each layer down, the stench in the air become thicker.

“Your Highness, you are risking to much by doing this, even though she is trapped with the ‘God Punishment Lock ‘, it isn’t safe.”

It was Carter who spoke. As soon as he knew that the prince was visiting the witch, he immediately went after the prince, advising him all along the road to stop going over. But it was all invalid, even the direct command of the king not to cross any dangerous situation had no effect. Obviously he had not only a cold and handsome Mr. Perfect face, why, was he also a chatterer? After some time, Roland only wanted that someone sew his mouth up. “Not daring to face evil, how will you fight it with such courage? I thought you knew that.”

„In addition to fighting the evil with courage, it is also important to assess one’s capabilities and act accordingly; reckless behavior is not equaled courageous.”

“That is to say, if you ran into an enemy weaker than you, you hold justice, but if he is stronger than you, you will turn a blind eye?”

“No, sir, I mean ……”

“Before you were already afraid of a witch raid, and now you are even afraid to see a little girl, my chief knight is really mighty.”

Although the knight was a good speaker, but he didn’t excel at arguing, encountering a natural talker like Roland he completely lacked the possibility to resist. Taking advantage of this effort, the group got to the bottom of the dungeon.

This floor was many times smaller than the one above, a total of only two cells. The warden lit the torches on the walls, the darkness faded, Roland saw the rolled up witch in a corner of her cell.

It was already late autumn, the temperature in the dungeon was low enough to make people see white gas when they breath, he wore a hair coat jacket with silk lining inside, naturally did not feel cold. But the other only wore linen, it wasn’t possible to fully wrap the body, arms and feet were sticking out and shown a frozen color.

The suddenly lit up torches let her crawl away, eyes closed. But soon, she opened her eyes and looked straight at them.

It was a pair of pale blue eyes, like a calm lake before the onset of heavy rains. There was no fear in her face, also you couldn’t see any anger or hatred. Roland saw an illusion, it was as if what he saw was not a weak little girl, instead he was engulfed in the shadow of a flame.  Being so instantly, he felt the torch light from the walls was a little dim.

She tried to stand up while leaning against the wall, in slow-motion always afraid to fall. But in the end she completely stood up, hobbled her way out of the corner allowing the light to cover her.

Already such a simple movement, yet it let his men suck in a mouth of cold air, in succession they even retreated two steps back, only one knight could resist and stood in front of Roland.

“What is your name?” Roland asked the witch and patted the knight on the shoulder, indicating that he did not need to be so nervous.

“Anna,” she replied.
