Interrogation

Shiori was relieved that her apology was accepted so easily. She thought she would have to apologize for several tens of minutes, but she was forgiven much easier than she expected. It seems that she was good at the tactic of ‘being humble’.
But at any rate, this should make the interrogation a little less rigorous. Thinking that, she felt a little relieved.

“For now, s-sit down. I-I have to start the interrogation. . .”

The blond knight, who should have been arrogant, gave Shiori instructions in a confused tone.
Since she decided to go with the humble strategy, Shiori obediently followed. And now that his eyes are swimming, she doesn’t feel much repulsion.

Two simple wooden chairs facing each other. When Shiori sat down on one of them, the blond knight sat on the remaining one.
There are two other knights in the narrow room, one standing by the wall with a pen and paper. And the other closed the iron door of the room and quietly lined up along the wall.
After clearing his throat, the blond knight opened his mouth.

“Then, first, tell me your name. . . Ah, tell me.”
“Shiori, Shiori Umemoto.”
“Shiori, huh. . .”

The blond-haired knight repeated Shiori’s name quietly to confirm.
Then, when he looked up and turned his gaze to Shiori again,

“I’m Schyle Killing. Call me Schyle.”

He suddenly started introducing himself.
She didn’t expect the blond knight to go out of his way to tell her his name, so Shiori was slightly taken aback by the kindness.
The other knights standing by the wall were also looking at each other in surprise.

“Ah, yes. . . Schyle-san.”

When she timidly called out his name, Schyle nodded in satisfaction. And he keeps asking questions.

“I don’t think you were born in this country, but where are you from?”
“Uh. . .”

What is the best answer? Shiori scratched her head.
I don’t want to lie too much in this situation. I’m not a good talker, and if even one lie is exposed, my position may become even more dangerous. ‘I didn’t do anything.’ Even the justified claim that it is a false accusation will be suspected as false.

On the other hand, she honestly thought it would be wrong to say ‘I came from another world’. She doesn’t know if he’ll believe it as easily as Roche, and on the contrary, she might be thought to be a crazy person.
After thinking for a few seconds that it would be suspicious if she kept quiet,

“I’m from Japan. It’s a very small country on the edge of the east.”

And so on. It seems that there are many countries in this world, even if not as many as there are on Earth, so she thought it would not be possible to assert that ‘such a country does not exist’.
She wasn’t lying, but when she saw the knight by the wall taking notes with a pen, Shiori’s heart beat faster. If they look into it later, they will find out there is no country called Japan in this world.

“Is it Japan? It’s a country I’ve never heard of before.”

Schyle mutters.
Shiori broke into a cold sweat and decided in her heart that the country would be too small to be on any map.
However, it’s only a matter of time before Shiori talks about her hometown too deeply, so Shiori decides to bring up a different topic.

“Um, I want to know why you brought me here. What are you suspecting me of?”

Her voice stiffens and her facial expression becomes serious. A sense of tension that is different from when she lied about her origin.
Even Schyle, whose gaze was restless when looking at her, looked back at Shiori with a serious face.

“You really have no idea, do you?”
“No. Absolutely not.”
“I see. . .”

Schyle nodded lightly and slowly began to explain.

“You are under suspicion of manufacturing a poisonous drug. To be more specific, you conspired with Roche Ghoul. . . or you were instructed by him to manufacture a dangerous abortion medicine that threatens the life of the mother and sell them to others.”
“Datai, medicine. . . . .?”
“Do you know what an abortion drug is? In other words, it’s a drug to forcibly destroy the child in the stomach. . . to kill the fetus.”

Stomach, child, kill.
Combining those three words, she could understand the meaning of abortion medicine. But at the same time, Shiori’s face turns pale.

“I-I’ve never made a drug like that!”

Contraceptives are always in the store. It’s popular among couples who do not want any more children, and is one of the drugs that sells surprisingly well.
But abortion medicine?

“Even if you’ve never made it, do you think it’s sold in the store? Did you ever see that man. . . Roche Ghoul making something like that?”

At Schyle’s question, Shiori silently shook her head. The only suspicious drugs sold at the store are aphrodisiacs, and they’re also legal. It’s not like Roche was secretly making unfamiliar medicine.

“Then, it doesn’t have to be abortion medicine. Hasn’t Roche Ghoul been selling illegal medicine?”

Schyle’s attitude seems to have softened towards Shiori, but he’s still tough on Roche.
Shiori shook her head again, and Schyle changed his question.

“How long have you been working for that man?”
“Um. . . I think, two months, about.”
“Eh, is that so?”

For some reason, after he said that he was relieved, Schyle whispered.

“So. . . you’re not that close to Roche Ghoul yet, are you? In other words. . . it’s just a relationship between boss and subordinate, employer and employee, not a relationship between a man and a woman.”

After being puzzled for a moment, Shiori immediately replied, ‘of course.’ She’s grown quite close to Roche, and although it feels like she’s been with him for more than two months, the relationship between them as boss and subordinate remains the same.

“Really.”

Seeing Schyle with a faintly happy face, everyone in the room, including Shiori and the remaining two knights, shook their heads. Perhaps noticing the quiet surroundings, Schyle hurriedly made up for it.

“Wh-whether or not you and Roche Ghoul have a deep relationship is an important matter. If they are lovers, they will cover up and make false statements. However, they only met two months ago. If it hasn’t passed that stage, then I can judge that the chances of you protecting that man are low.”
“Haa, I see. . .”

Shiori replied vaguely. She was a little perplexed by Schyle’s way of saying that as if he was defending himself.

“But there’s nothing to protect. . .Really, I’ve never seen Roche making a dangerous abortion drug. He’s innocent too.”

Shiori complained earnestly and continues.

“I mean, how did Roche get arrested in the first place? Did anyone see where they were selling abortion medicine?”
“Well, I have to explain it. What shall I start with? How much do you know about the royal family of this country?”
“Not at all. I don’t know much about this country yet. . . I know that there is a princess.”

She flinched at the word ‘royalty’ that suddenly appeared. And wonders what it has to do with the fact that they were arrested.
Schyle nodded back and continued ahead.

A few hours later, while Shiori was resting alone in the detention room after being interrogated, Kurst was still working in the nearby royal castle.
Standing in the hallway, his gaze somehow turned to the scenery of the courtyard illuminated by the moonlight. However, when the large door on the side opened quietly, Kurst turned to meet the person who came out from the inside-the king.

“How was it?”

Kurst asks.

“They’re recovering a lot. It seems that both mother and child are no longer in danger.”

The king spoke in a calm voice with a solemn look on his face. Hearing that answer, Kurst breathes a sigh of relief.
The ‘mother and child’ that the king spoke of was his second wife, a concubine, and the child in her womb. Kurst now stood in front of the antechamber door of the bedroom where the concubine rested.
Due to a ‘certain incident’ that happened three days ago, there was a tense atmosphere in the castle. It will soften up little by little.

“I am relieved. The concubine too. . .the prince in her stomach is also safe.”

When Kurst said that, the king nodded deeply. The red-haired magician Garrell’s fortune-telling reveals that the child in the concubine’s womb is a boy.
The baby is the only male descendant of the current king and will become the future king. That precious life was almost lost before he was born.

The commotion happened three days ago. It began when one of the queen’s maid’s visited the concubine.
She held out a beautiful box of tea leaves and said to the concubine’s lady-in-waiting:

“This is a gift from the queen. It is a tea leaf specially brought from a foreign country, and it contains plenty of nutrients that a pregnant woman needs. Please have a drink.”

They can’t let the Queen’s gift go unnoticed. The maids immediately served it with baked goods at afternoon tea time. And the concubine was so please with the Queen’s thoughtfulness that she put her teacup to her mouth without hesitation.
By the way, the concubine who is pregnant with the king’s heir always has a taster at the table, and gifts from the queen are no exception.
The concubine drank the tea after it was tasted for poison, but it was bitter and not delicious at all.
The lady-in-waiting of the concubine said,

“I was told that it contains plenty of nutrients, so it must be half medicine.”

They added sweet jam to the tea, but it still didn’t suit the concubine’s tongue.

“Even if you add some sweetness, the strong bitterness won’t go away. I know it’s a good medicine, but if I keep drinking this tea, I’m going to get sick of it. I’m so sorry to the queen, but I’ll secretly throw this away.”

In the end, the concubine took two sips of the tea and threw it away. Her decision, however, would later save her own life.
Late at night, when the taster complained of abdominal pain, the concubine began to suffer from the same symptoms.

But unlike the taster, whose pain soon subsided, the pregnant concubine’s weakness was severe. She was at risk of a miscarriage at one point.
However, thanks to the hard care of those around her, now that three days have passed, she has recovered to the point where the doctor can say, ‘there is no problem anymore.’

Both the concubine and the fetus were safe, but the culprit of the incident must be pursed.
When the concubine’s royal guards restrained and interrogated the queen’s maid who had brought the suspicious tea leaves, she admitted her guilt surprisingly easily. She apparently took her action even with the intention that she would be put to death.
The maid said,

“I did this myself. The queen doesn’t know anything. She has nothing to do with it.”

As if to corroborate that statement, it is said that when the queen heard about the incident, she trembled in surprise. There is of course the possibility that she is acting, but in fact they have not come up with any evidence from around the Queen that she was involved in the incident.
In the first place, as a queen, she was looking forward to the birth of the king’s successor. Even if it’s not her child.

The queen had a constitution that made it difficult for her to have children. She worked hard to have children for a long time, and even the one child she finally received was a girl who could not succeed to the throne.
In this country, women are not aloud to become kings.
After that, the queen and the king tried hard to have a boy, but they were never blessed with children other than the first girl.

And a year ago, the king decided to take a second wife. The queen was also old, and it became difficult for her to give birth safely.
In this country where polygamy is allowed only for the royal family, the reason why the king has never tried to have a relationship with another woman is because he loved the queen.
The queen also loved the king from the bottom of her heart, but she had a strong desire to have a child who inherited his blood inherit this country, so she encouraged the king to marry a second wife.
Of course, there must have been various conflicts, but the queen warmly welcomed the young concubine to the castle together with the king.

Because of this background, not only the relationship between the king and the queen, but also the relationship between the king and the concubine, and the queen and the concubine were going well without any problems. The fact that the concubine was a humble and modest person may also be a big factor.
Soon after, the concubine became pregnant with the king’s child, and no one was more delighted than the queen when they found out that the child was a boy.

Most of the people in the castle knew about such circumstances, so few people suspected that the queen was involved in this incident. Even the poisoned concubine.
The incident was caused by the queen’s maid alone. It was almost certain.

The knights are currently investigating the motives behind the maid’s crime and how they obtained the dangerous abortion medicine.
In this country, a special license is required to sell abortion drugs, but the drugs used in this case are dangerous and illegal and can even kill the mother. If there is anyone out there, that person will be charged with a crime without question. Even if they had a license to sell abortion medicine.

“It’s time for His Majesty to take a rest. . .”

Kurst quietly offered to the tired-looking king. Worried about the king who has been tense since the incident and has hardly had a rest.
But the king shook his head loosely,

“Let’s return to the office. Otto or Schyle, who are in charge of the interrogation, should be coming to report soon. After that, let’s rest.”
“I understand.”

Kurst nodded and followed the king down the corridor.
Otto and Schyle are the names of the captain and the vice-captain of the royal guard of the concubine. Kurst, the vice-captain of the King’s Guard, also knows them well.
Because they often see each other in the castle, and sometimes they cooperate with each other on missions.

Moreover, when it comes to Schyle, he is a person who has known him well for a long time, partly because he is of a similar family background and is of the same age.
However, they are not close enough to be called childhood friends.
Kurst treats him with a sense of familiarity, but for some reason Schyle seems to dislike him. It’s been that way since they were kids.

Regarding this incident, Schyle’s Knights of the Imperial Guard of the concubine are leading the investigation, and Kurst is not involved in the interrogation of the criminal at all. He just has to continue to protect the king as usual.
But if he had been involved, Shiori might not have had to spend the night in a tiny jail cell that night.
