Chapter 1

Announcement So, this is going to be the second time I am trying to write a book. I really wanted to do some kingdom building, but I can't do that in my first book. I'm mostly designing my own universe there and I will somehow have to create every rule mentioned and teasered in other stories happening in the same universe there. Fun times! Thanks for reading!

“That’s it for today.” The teacher closed her lesson. Honestly for Kai it had been over for nearly an hour, because some of her classmates didn’t understand something. It had been boring, which was a standard issue in school, at least in her opinion. Kai was one of the people who didn't have to learn at home to achieve good results in school. Boring sadly hadn’t been enough, no today it also had to be incredibly hot!

The teacher looked at at the class sternly. “Remember to practice for the exam next week! And don’t learn, you can’t learn math.”

Kai rolled my eyes. Of course you could learn math. She had no idea why she always said that sentence before exams, but it was annoying.

She for her part is going to do neither. Attending school has to be enough and Kai wanted her time at home to play some games. Why would she go to school if she had to do school at home again anyway?

Kai sighed and started to pack her already neatly stacked books into her bag. There had been enough time to bring some order on her table.

As she packed her stuff the others of her class started talking about the things they would do on the weekend and after school. Kai wasn’t very popular for such talks as she always answered playing computer games.

Kai hoisted her bag and was about to leave the classroom when one of the class idiots came to her with his two followers. He looked at Kai as if she was something he could play with and she really hated that look, not that she showed it on the outside. “Ahh Kai! Going to do boy things in your free time again?”

He sneered at her. “Always at home playing computer games. Don’t you have a life?”

Kai looked at him impassively. “Of course I have a life, or how else would I give you the chance to prove your incredible stupidity in front of everyone else?”

His eyes twitched and his smile vanished. That in turn made her smile sweetly at him. “As for what I do with my free time, I am not going to do boy things. I will, as always, spend my time with computer games, which can be played by whoever wants to play them.”

Kai turned around and started to walk away while she continued. “Contrary to other persons in the immediate surroundings, I do not feel the need to drown myself in alcohol and other drugs. I do very much like my brain cells.”

The dude had difficulties holding back his anger. “You bitch!”

She waved her hand at him. “I wish you good luck at lowering your IQ again this weekend.”

Then Kai stepped into the hallway and made her way out of the building.

You might have noticed that she was not the most popular for other reasons too. For one Kai doesn’t like getting picked on and well gaming was not that popular in her class.

She might also not be the most beautiful, not that she was ugly. Kai just like her body as it was and didn’t feel the need for makeup or flauntering it around in any other way.

As she walked down the staircase Kai thought to herself that she was really lucky to be at this school. While she did earn herself a few punches in her earlier years all the undesirables had been weeded out in 10th class.

A boy opened the door in front of Kai and she was greeted by a gust of hot summer air. It immediately made her body start sweating and she sighed. Kai stepped through the door and nodded to the boy. “Thanks.”

He nodded back. “Pleasure.”

Kai started her way home and took her sweet time. Not having a life as some idiots called it had its perks just so you know.

Normally she would walk home together with a friend of hers, but sadly he had had a dentist appointment earlier today. He was pretty much the only friend Kai had in class.

As she continued walking her thoughts drifted to the things she would experience later today. Her online mates and she had some last preparations to do so they could tackle the boss in a certain dinosaur game tomorrow.

Kai also wanted to continue the round of the strategy game they had started a week ago. She had designed her own race to roleplay a bit during the game.

It was a species of insect people that you could describe as xenophobic. They were not aggressive, but would bite back if you attacked them. Notoriously known to degrade other intelligent species to second class citizens they weren’t well liked and especially not a tourist destination.

The Antanoid as Kai had called them would always ship citizens of other species to colonies especially built to be available to outsiders. Their normal territory was completely off limits for all non-Antanoid

It was not easy to play that way as she couldn’t rely on trading income with other races and still had to finance a heavy defense even in times of peace. But for all it was difficult playing them, Kai had a lot of fun doing it.

The dudes she was playing with had also started to roleplay because of her. One of them was trying to become friends with everyone and the group had a heck of a lot of fun with that.

Kai smiled to herself, good times. She walked past an ice cream shop and stopped. Some ice cream right now was very enticing, but then she would have to talk with the vendor.

Nah, let’s not do that.

Kai continued walking. After about ten minutes she changed to the other side of the street, there were a lot more shadows there and she didn’t want to walk in the sun.

Her hand started to fan air to herself, it was just so goddamn hot. Actually doing that was not that smart. The movement of her arm would just make herself feel even warmer. Kai stopped fanning air to herself and continued her way home thinking of this and that.

She looked up and saw the traffic light switch to green. Kai could start walking a bit faster to reach it in time, but really let’s not do that.

Shortly before she reached the lights they changed back to red, as Kai had anticipated. Now she had to wait for about two minutes and there was no shadow to hide in. Kai sighed.

She would have to cross two more streets with traffic lights and if she already had to wait here then she wasn’t walking at the perfect speed to cross them all once they turned green. Shoot, her friend would mock her if he knew Kai forgot to walk home perfectly. She rolled her eyes.

It was a game between the two of them and he already had two more points than her. Kai liked to make games out of things, at least with people she knew.

The traffic light turned green and Kai continued her walk. The hot air created small illusions above the asphalt of the street, lovely.

Kai took my bottle out of her bag as she walked past the weird art school that always had people smoking in front of it in the morning. She hated the smell of cigarettes, so it was not one of her favorite spots.

Kai took a sip of water and put the bottle back, making herself painfully aware of her wet back. She shuddered, a shower was desperately needed once she was home.

The light of the next traffic light turned red again once Kai arrived there, though this time she could wait in the shadow of a tree for it to turn green.

There weren’t all that many cars on the street right now and Kai could technically walk over the street while the light was red, but she wouldn’t be German if she did that. It was also illegal and you had to pay a fine of 5€ if somebody had enough time to report you walking over an empty street while the traffic light was red.

Kai had to smile to herself as she thought about that. She had no idea why she even knew that, but eh.

The traffic light turned green and Kai started to walk. On the other side of the street she noticed a weird flicker next to her. Curious as Kai was, she of course turned around to investigate further.

There on the sidewalk the hazy form of a truly gigantic wasp-like insect was flicking in and out of existence. If she said gigantic she meant it, the stinger alone had to be at least her height and Kai was 1.9 m tall.

She blinked, but the weird thing was still there. Not believing what she was seeing Kai pinched herself, but the thing was still there.

She looked it over again and turned around. Nope nopedie nope! There was no way she was going to be involved in something weird like that, so let’s just act like we didn’t see anything.

Whatever that was, Kai wanted to have nothing to do with it, so she tried to continue her way home like before.

She failed and unconsciously walked faster, but tried to ignore that too. A deep humming came from behind her and Kai could feel herself pale as the sweating on her back began to intensify. Crap!

She started to run while silently praying to herself that she was just tired and imagining things. The humming became louder and Kai could actually feel the air brushing against her back.

There was no way that she imagined that, so what in the soupy calculus was happening right now?

Kai started to sprint, though it would likely not help because she wasn’t the most active and athletic.

The woman on the sidewalk across the street looked at her and started to scream. Kai looked back, offended. Truly, she didn’t look that bad and the insect surely wasn’t directly behind her.

Something lifted Kai up. Oh crap! A scream tore free from her mouth, but was silenced as something impacted her head. Everything exploded in agony and her world went white.

Yes white not black, that was important right now! Kai lost consciousness.
