With the attackers approaching the ranged guards took up their close combat weapons and prepared themselves to fight. Everyone braced for what was about to go down until something utterly unexpected to them happened.
James had stepped forwards holding a small leather ball with a long fuse slowly burning on it; he had pulled out a basic weapon that he had been able to make himself, a slingshot. All of his guards began to get angry with James wondering how they were supposed to protect him if he was leading the charge.
James versus the big man with the shield was not a battle that the mercenaries would like to see, only the next second they realised what he was doing, he had stepped forward to clear his line of sight to shoot towards the big man with the shield.
'Thank god I prepared something, that guy looks dangerous, let's see how they react to this' James pulled back, and the ball shot forwards towards the man charging with his shield ahead of him. Clearly, he was aiming to block the projectile with his shield as well.
"Everyone, close your eyes and run forwards; after you see the flash is over open your eyes and get ready to fight" James quickly told this to all the men and began to run forwards towards his impending doom. All of the guards had no idea what this young man was doing, but they just decided to do as he said.
As they were running with their eyes closed they saw a massive amount of light through their eyelids and heard a loud bang; they began to feel terrified of this young man, how had he made such an enormous reaction with such a small ball?
"Open your eyes now!" James had timed it for the last of the material to finish burning off and charged forwards. All of the attackers were now completely dazed, and the man's shield had been ruined with the force of the ball bursting, the attacks of everyone earlier on had mostly wrecked it, but this explosion was the finishing touch.
James decided the most significant immediate threat was the big man, feeling he was the leader James wanted to keep him alive, but he could only think of one way to do that quickly, James wasn't sure if he would be able to pull it off or not but he was ready to give it a go.
James ran forwards as fast as his body would take him towards the big man who still had a stunned look on his face from the explosion that had happened right in front of him.
When he reached the man, he took out two knives he had kept concealed under his shirt and slid through the man's legs, as he slipped through them he swiped out with both blades with one aim, cut the muscles in the man's legs to prevent him from fighting entirely.
James felt one of his knives firmly slice through the mans upper thigh and saw that leg immediately begin to collapse, unfortunately, this bad timing meant he wasn't able to aim correctly into the other leg and only ended up leaving a surface cut, still with one leg out of action that man was a massively smaller threat.
Watching James pull off this shocking move the mercenaries began to feel more respect for James seeing he was even more of an enigma than they had thought. And he was capable of a lot more than they thought he was.
After James had slid through the man's legs, he found himself in the middle of the group of attackers, even if James could pull off amazing feats like what he had just done he didn't really have much fighting experience and had indeed thrown himself into the thick of it.
James decided just to make the most of the time he had and lunged forward with his sword toward what looked to be the weakest attacker. Unfortunately, with this man being skinnier than the others he was apparently focused on speed and dexterity, he had only just recovered from the light blowing up in front of him when he saw a sword flying towards himself, he threw himself sidewards and just barely managed to dodge the attack.
Knowing that his attack had failed, James didn't let up and pushed forwards attacking as fast as his body would let him, he was aiming to suppress the man he had attacked rather than killing him.
The rest of his mercenaries had caught up now and after sticking three men on the big attacker they sent two to each other man except for the man James was suppressing; he got back up from one of the mercenaries who through gripping the best timing along with James' swings quickly dispatched the man they were attacking.
"Keep as many alive as you can!" James panicked seeing that the mercenaries he had hired were beginning to suppress the attackers, he needed to keep at least one of them alive if he could.
The mercenary who had helped him attack joined another group and formed three to attack another man who they finished with instantly, they had learnt something from James, the mercenaries just went for the muscles in his legs and arms, once they had been cut the man couldn't move anymore. This pattern was followed with every man afterwards; these mercenaries were terrific, they kept all but one of the men alive who had accidentally thrown his neck into the path of one of the mercenaries swords.
Finally, the big man had pulled out a giant axe, he had long lost his decimated shield and was now merely keeping everyone at bay with the reach of the shaft. Seeing this some of the men split from the crowd and recovered three spears from the bodies of people James had thrown them into. Once they were able to attack from three different angles they found it easy to suppress the man, they went for the backs of his legs and the undersides of his arms, and after a few solid hits, he was unable to stand and support his weapon.
One of the mercenaries used the spear to rip the mask off of the man's head, and James immediately recognised him. Wasn't this the best man of the inner city noble, the one who had come to the weapons demonstration? After he saw that James' face formed a wicked smile and he activated dominators gaze while looking at the man.
