Winter has arrived. Slightly later than in our house. Kamian and Jex set off early in the morning to fetch firewood, while I accompanied Debra to transform our household items for the winter.

Before the severe cold set in, we had to retrieve the thick, fluffy winter blankets and replace the curtains and carpet with thicker ones.

Due to my susceptibility to the biting cold, Kamian had already switched the items in my room to winter ones. Thus, our task remained in Debra’s and Jex’s bedrooms, as well as Kamian’s own bedroom and the living room—these were the three areas we had to work on.

Thanks to Kamian’s prearrangement of shifting the four-person table in the living room to one side, all we had to do was lay down the carpet in the living room.

The carpet, which had been stored in the warehouse all year round, was undoubtedly laden with dust. Debra and I held both ends of the carpet and took it outside, hanging it on the clothesline. As I flicked the dense carpet with my hand, a haze of dust dispersed into the air. Debra swatted away the floating dust particles before my face.

“Liv, Liv. Stay inside since the dust is being dispersed.”

“It’s alright, really. We’ve kept it well, so there isn’t much to shed, I suppose.”

Embarrassingly, as I spoke, dust flew up as we beat the carpet. I quickly waved my hand, afraid that Debra might notice. Nevertheless, thanks to our meticulous care, the amount of dust was not as significant as I had feared. If the dust had erupted in such a suffocating cloud that it left me breathless, I would have stood obediently behind Debra, accepting her reprimand from afar.

After completing the dusting task and laying down the carpet, I proceeded to each bedroom to remove the curtains. Since I was slightly taller than Debra, it fell upon me to handle the curtains. The curtain size, precisely fitting the small windows, was manageable even for me.

I flawlessly replaced the curtains solely relying on my strength. As I beheld the change from a refreshing sky-blue to a warm burgundy hue, my chest swelled with a sense of accomplishment. Next, carrying the winter blankets to shake off any dust, I made my way to Kamian’s bedroom. The distance from the storage room to the bedroom was not considerable, yet due to the exertion of carrying the blankets, sweat poured down my body like a sudden rain shower. I had certainly fulfilled my exercise for the day.

While Debra efficiently removed Kamian’s neatly arranged blanket and replaced it with a thick winter one, I sat on the desk chair and removed the pillowcase.

“By the way, the new semester is about to start.”

“I can’t fathom why time passes so swiftly these days. It’s already time for the new semester; it’s hard to believe.”

“Isn’t it more accurate to say that you don’t want to believe it?”

“You’re sharp.”

As I replied honestly, Debra emitted a delightful laughter. It wasn’t even an exceptionally humorous remark, yet her laughter somehow brought a smile to my face as well.

“Well, what did you do to have the vacation end so soon?”

“What did I do? I briefly paid attention to Leo and then returned to Kamian.”
