In the Room

Wen Wenyao rolled over groggily in bed, raised her arm, and touched the sheets beside her, only to find no one there. Suddenly, her sleepiness vanished as she woke up. She opened her eyes and discovered the empty space beside her. Reaching into the covers, where Song Nanqiao had been sleeping earlier, she felt that it had grown cold.

“Song Nanqiao,” Wen Wenyao unconsciously called out, but there was no response in the room.

A sense of panic instantly engulfed Wen Wenyao’s heart. Without thinking too much, she got up, turned on the room’s light, and walked into the living room wearing her thin nightgown.

“Where are you…”

She surveyed the surroundings of the living room, her anxious gaze searching every corner, trying to find Song Nanqiao’s figure. However, the living room remained silent and dim, like a static photograph.

She quickly turned on the living room light, only to find no one there.

The bright light reached the balcony.

Song Nanqiao knew that Wen Wenyao had woken up and silently cursed herself before hurrying over from the balcony.

When she entered the living room, she was met with the sight of the girl’s pale and somewhat feeble face, her eye sockets red as if she were about to cry. She was dressed in nothing but a thin nightgown, and the cool breeze from the living room made her legs tremble involuntarily.

Seeing this scene, Song Nanqiao couldn’t think twice and rushed over, tightly embracing Wen Wenyao. She grabbed a coat from the sofa and draped it over Wen Wenyao.

“Why did you come out without wearing clothes?”

Song Nanqiao stroked the girl’s back and asked gently.

“I couldn’t find you…” Wen Wenyao raised her hand and held onto Song Nanqiao. Her voice began to tremble, and when she realized Song Nanqiao wasn’t by her side, her first instinct was to look for her without thinking.

“I’m right here with you.”

Song Nanqiao patiently reassured her, holding Wen Wenyao’s waist and guiding her back to the bedroom. She wrapped her in the blanket and turned on the room’s air conditioner.

The weather was too cold, and when she had first held Wen Wenyao, she had noticed that the girl was cold all over.

“Where did you go?” Wen Wenyao rubbed her reddened eyes and held onto Song Nanqiao’s hand, sounding worried.

“I went to the balcony to check if my sweater was dry.”

“Why did you go at night?”

The girl’s clear and watery eyes locked onto Song Nanqiao’s, as if trying to discern something.

“I just felt like going to check at the moment,” Song Nanqiao replied without hesitation. She had never hesitated to tell a lie.

“Next time… don’t go out at night. I’ll worry. It’s so dark outside, and I’m afraid you might go out and it won’t be safe…”

Ever since that nightmare, Wen Wenyao had been particularly concerned about Song Nanqiao’s safety when she went out. After 6 p.m., she didn’t allow Song Nanqiao to leave the house. When she didn’t see anyone in the living room, she immediately thought that Song Nanqiao had gone out, and the fear that had lingered from the nightmare had crept into her heart.

“I didn’t go out. I remember your advice.”

Song Nanqiao gently explained, knowing that Wen Wenyao would worry about her safety. So, during this time, every time she went out, she would inform Wen Wenyao in advance and never go out alone.

“Go back to sleep.” Wen Wenyao mumbled.

It was only 4 AM now, and they had only slept for three or four hours. Now that she had found Song Nanqiao, Wen Wenyao just wanted to go back to rest with her.

“Alright, let’s sleep a bit more.”

Song Nanqiao held her waist and lifted her with a burst of strength. The faint, refreshing scent on Wen Wenyao’s body alleviated Song Nanqiao’s anxiety and tension.

Looking at Wen Wenyao’s cheek, Song Nanqiao’s expression darkened.

No matter what… Wen Wenyao must not be harmed.
