Chapter 54.1: Waiting

 This is over, the aftermath.

First, Mingyu had lost her favour, for she had served her for so many years, the Empress did not punish her explicitly but she did not trust her as much as before, Mingyu was sad about this but there was nothing she could do.

The other one, Noble Lady Yu.

“Congratulations.” The Empress shook the swaddling clothes in her arms and smiled, “This Palace Mistress presented her love to the Emperor on your behalf the other day, the Emperor, in recognition of your childbirth, will raise you to the throne, tomorrow by decree, you will be the Concubine, the Palace Mistress of the Yonghe Palace!”

“Niangniang!” Noble Lady Yu was speechless with emotion, she had been worried that she was too low in the hierarchy to keep Fifth Prince with her, now this was no longer a problem Dao Dao, “This humble Concubine doesn't know how to thank you for your great kindness...”

“You just take care of yourself, take care of Fifth Prince.” The Empress smiled kindly, when the swaddled Fifth Prince suddenly reached out with a chubby little hand and grabbed a strand of her hair and cried out a few times.

“Ouch, Fifth Prince, let go! Don't hurt your Empress Niangniang!” Noble Lady Yu said urgently.

“No harm, no foul.” The Empress looked happy, allowing Fifth Prince to play with her hair as a toy and stroking her cheek with her fingers and a maternal glow in her eyes.

   Wei Yingluo looked on, pondering.

When Noble Lady Yu left with Fifth Prince in her arms, Wei Yingluo asked tentatively: “It's about time we had a little master at the Changchun Palace.”

“You!” The Empress said as she tipped her finger to her forehead, “A girl who is not yet married, aren't you ashamed to say that?”

Wei Yingluo rubbed her forehead, not ashamed either and asked with a smile: “Is the Emperor coming tonight?”

On the contrary, the Empress was a little ashamed of what she had said, she bowed her head and mewed, her cheeks flushed a little and a real little girl's gesture.

At night, the carriage is driving towards the Changchun Palace, Hongli is reclining on the carriage, one fist on his temple, eyes closed, looking tired.

“Life is like a dream, let me drink a few cups.”

A kun song came from the wind, like a sob, like a complaint, like a grievance.

   “... Stop.” Hongli said.

The carriage stopped but the song does not stop, it is sung poignantly, with the bleak sound of the huqin as the sun sets.

Where the song came from... is the Chuxiu Palace.

The Chuxiu Palace, which used to be full of people, is now deserted, the autumn breeze sweeping through the leaves and a cold and desolate story.

A doorkeeper was dozing at the door, when he heard a noise, he opened his eyes and saw that it was the emperor's carriage and was startled, he was about to sing but Hongli stopped him with a raised hand.

Slowly dismounting from the palace and slowly opening the door, Hongli, with only Liyu by his side, walked silently into the Chuxiu Palace and approaches the singer.

Three or two palace men sit in the courtyard, one held a huqin, one held a flute, one held a jug of wine, Noble Consort Hui is dressed as an opera singer, his eyebrows are painted and he sings a song called “Noble Consort Drunken Wine”.

“Life is like a dream, let me drink a few cups.” Noble Consort Hui drained the goblet in one gulp, the goblet is thrown away with a wave of her hand, the sound of jade shattering begins, she dances at the sound of the shattering, her waist is so slender that it cannot be held, her dance is as graceful as the waves of a goddess.

Halfway through the dance, suddenly her feet give way and she fell into a strong embrace.

Hongli looks down and smells the scent of intoxication and frowned: “Why is Noble Consort drinking real wine?”

The Huqin and Qiang flute stopped, Zhilan put down the jug and rose to explain: “Your Majesty, forgive me, Niangniang was in a bad mood, so she said he wanted to sing a song to drive away her sorrow and ordered this lowly servant to open the jar of wine, this lowly servant did not dare to stop,”

   “Nonsense!” Hongli scolded.

“Your Majesty, Your Majesty...” The beautiful woman in his arms seemed drunk, she seemed awake, she called out to him and cried out.

Hongli had no choice but to pick her up and carry her to the bedchamber.

No one knew what would happen next, neither Liyu nor Zhilan, both stayed at the door, leaving Hongli and Noble Consort Hui alone in the bedchamber.

“Noble Consort.” Hongli placed Noble Consort Hui on the bed, somewhat helplessly, “Why are you crying?”

Noble Consort Hui threw her arms around him, like a man in the water grasping a straw and lifting her tearful face to his, she said sadly: “Your Majesty, why don't you call me Xin'er anymore?”

   Hongli frowned.

Noble Consort Hui rested his cheek against his chest and sobbed softly: “If it were possible, I would rather not be Noble Consort but your Ningxin’er.”

Hongli looked down at her and said: “Noble Consort, you're drunk...”

“No, I'm not drunk.” Noble Consort Hui exhaled a breath of wine and it became clear that what she was saying now, she was speaking from her heart through the strength of her wine, “I used to love to sing and dance and the Emperor loved to watch but now that I am in the palace, the Emperor doesn't come often and has become distant to me.”
