What was that?

Determination? Strength? Courage?

Anakin gripped the fabric around his chest. His heart was thumping too loud it was ringing to his ears. The last time he had this much adrenaline is when he raced with Claire—and that was due to exhilarating exhaustion he received by continually overdriving his magic. He didn't even do anything now. He was just talking to Faustina, who just made a face that he didn't saw coming.

She was, after all, so gloomy the first time she arrived. And he couldn't help but compare her to her other siblings who made no resemblance to her. But then again, her looks derived from the duchess who barely came out on public since the duke's scandal…

Anakin shook his thoughts away; and with a final glance to Faustina, he made his leave.

It was too exhausting to think about trivial matters when he had too much on his plate right now. He had planned everything well but the results would only rely on his abilities to manipulate and lie to the people around him. Of course, Anakin was aware that he was doing something that could be proven as evil—anyone around him would be fully aware that he was committing such a lowly act.

But for Anakin, it was a purpose.

Anakin had teachers that often compared him to his older brother, whose sense of judgment and talents outstands those of others. He was the epitome of what the perfect son would be. And the Disfiegro couple displayed their affection on his older brother greatly because of his righteousness, integrity, handsome features, and his seeming perfect personality.

"Your older brother Ruenti aced this test so easily. Why can't you simply substitute this equation into this formula? It shouldn't have been that hard."

Anakin's teacher was Ruenti's too (Lilliane had separate ones due to her lack of interest to study). This teacher often compared the two brothers together, and he had put one to pedestal while the other simply shadowed. And this kind of discrimination didn't happen only on studies.

The Disfiegro household is brimming with ac.u.men and it starts with Anakin's parents—the lady marchioness who almost worshipped her husband and imposed her wicked ideals to her daughter—Lady Luna Disfiegro. She was a beautiful lady that was born from a lower noble but found a husband at the tender age of 18 with her beauty. And the one who she had captured was Marquis Raven Disfiegro. He was a husband that was aloof and strict.

And like any other parent, the Marquis and his wife had their favorites. For Anakin's father, it was Ruenti—his firstborn son who was a man that is driven with righteousness and talent. For Anakin's mother, it would be the only daughter of the house, whom she took glee to teach about her wicked ways and her partner on lavishing on the Disfiegro house's monetary funds.

Being the second child meant to be the one in the middle—the one who receives no attention. In Anakin's case, anyway.

But Anakin isn't blaming anyone. If anything, he was thanking them. The lack of attention and affection drove him to do his best. It drove him to improve his magic and his skills to negotiate and trick people. Anakin Disfiegro grew cunning and deceitful as the years passed by. Although he had these skills, he didn't use it to the people who drove him to become who he is. They were part of the process, and he didn't want to soil them.

Or more likely—they do not matter.

Well, at least, not Ruenti. He was the only one who mattered for Anakin. His brother Ruenti was a man that was driven and just. Despite their parents having their own sets of prejudices, Ruenti was different. He didn't have favorites and treated his siblings equally. He was talented, smart, and good-looking. Countless households have presented their daughters to the Disfiegros in hope of getting their daughters engaged to the perfect Ruenti Disfiegro.

"Another girl's coming for tea again… with the excuse of being Lilliane's friend? You got to be kidding me." Anakin reads the letter. "This girl… er, what's her name?"—Anakin's eyes lowered down to the paper one more time—"Margarette. So this Margarette's from the house of some provincial earl. She says she had a tea party with Lilliane once. Is this true? You're friends with a daughter of some country bumpkin noble?"

Lilliane rolled her eyes. "I just talked to her once and she thinks we're already friends."

Anakin smirked. Of course, Lilliane won't be friends with a lowly noble. She was the pride of their mother—from the tricks and the ways of Luna Disfiegro, Lilliane learned how to bewitch males ever so easily. She was beautiful and had herself fixated on a goal bigger than any girl could dream of.

"I thought so. We don't want Feuersturm's future empress to be friends with lowly noble girls. You have to secure that reputation, Lilianne."

Lilliane Disfiegro is the number one candidate to be the king's bride. She was the only girl with the power to ascend the throne from her social standing, beauty, and influence. At a young age, their mother Luna had already dreamed for Lilliane to be the queen from the start, so she groomed her and exposed her to social circles as early as possible. This gained Lilliane exposure and made the Disfiegro name well-known that people, and the governments residing in the castle, referred to her as the number one candidate.

But Lilliane never met the king in her whole life, so she had fancied another person who had piqued her interest.

"Brother Ruenti, say, you talked to Ezekiel Unsterblich, right? Did he say yes?"

Ruenti ruffled Lilliane's hair.

"Of course he said yes. Who would resist my little sister's beauty?"

Lilliane then grinned as she ran towards Ruenti and gave him a peck on the cheek.

"Thank you, Brother!"

"Ugh," Anakin grimaced. "You're leeching off the Unsterblich guy even though you're going to be the king's bride?"

"I've just invited him to dinner in the capital! We're just going to that restaurant as friends."

"As friends," Anakin repeated.

"Yes. And possibly even more than that," Lilliane leaned to Anakin's ear. "Even when I get married and be the empress."

Anakin only raised his brow.

"You're mother's daughter, alright."

**

His older brother and younger sister are achieving so much. How can he remain to be someone who's mediocre? Anakin couldn't bear the thought of having his brother Ruenti become such a great man and his sister Lilliane being the empress whilst he would stand to support them from the sidelines.

No.

He would make his OWN glory too!

He had acquired all the possible information from these people… and also, he had absorbed a considerable amount of mana from them. Anakin slid his hand to his pocket as he feels the crystal fragments on his pockets. Of course—he kept one. The safe ones, that is. It cost him a fortune, but he wasn't the one who paid but his house. Purchasing from the black market was risky, but it was worth it. He was able to steal the mana of these unsuspecting fools whilst acquiring information at the same time.

"Thank you for sharing it all with me," Anakin exclaimed. "I'm really sorry about earlier, about how I acted and divided the groups. I just… I was so proud."

The tone of his voice, the emotions in his eye, and the gestures he was imposing were all staged. Anakin practiced and sharpened his skills in lying. No one could pierce through his façade. Not anyone. And he had tested this trick to anyone possible—to the women who would offer their v.i.r.g.i.nities to him just because he said he would 'come back' for them, down to the nobles who think they would be able to have connections with the Disfiegro house by 'befriending' him.

Anakin tricked them all.

Now, since he was done getting all the information he needs, he had to get rid of the competition.

What. He wasn't that generous to have commoners passing the exam. He doesn't even think that they were worthy to be walking with, much to study with! Anakin still was smiling apologetically as she talked to one of the filthy commoners while he thought of a plan to lead these stupid miscreants to their doom.

And as Anakin continued to walk, he felt the crystal on his left pocket react.

A monster is close.

Anakin smirked on the inside, but he gave a hesitant smile on the outside.

"Umm… this path we're going with kinda set me off… what if we take another route? For instance, the left path? I know it leads back to the castle."

"Er… Levi told us to simply walk straight."

Levi. Leviticus. That name ticked Anakin beyond reason. Anakin simply smiled.

"I've actually seen the castle that way. Maybe we should head there."

"But we need to obey Levi—"

"You don't need to obey anyone. We're all equal here, right?" Anakin said with a smile. 'That's right. Taste your own medicine.' Anakin thought.

"That's right, we don't need to obey anyone." From a distance, a voice said. "Why don't you give us more lecturing, Mr. Noble boy?"

Anakin slowly turned towards the source of the voice. Rage welled up inside Anakin as his eyes catch the golden, magical hex earring which belonged to the person who made his blood boil from the start of the exam.

"Levi!"

"You're here!"

"Yes, I am," Leviticus says, and then turns to Michelle and the others. "Care to tell me why this spoiled rich boy is here, and Faustina isn't?"
