A Sword is Necessary

Translator: LERL

“So I should chant “Fireball!” just like the other guy?”

“Yeah, just like that. I didn’t see you doing it just now.”

“Yeah, I wasn’t. Is the chanting really necessary?”

“Yes. Performing spells without the chanting requires a lot of skill, and will weaken your magic if not done correctly. However, the more skilled mages are able to do so without dropping much power at all.”

I see. The instructor has just suggested that my magic is bad, but I can understand why.

I didn’t see it but, the other 2 people’s magic are surely stronger than mine. This means that the reason my magic was so weak was because I was not chanting effectively.

“Thanks again for teaching me. Should we try again?”

“The Magic Practical Exam can be retaken up to 3 times. Anyway, I don’t think it’s that necessary to practice.”

No need to practice?

. . . I do not know what he is talking about, for now, it seems that I am allowed to start over again.
For now, I will just try it out and ask them for the reason why later.

“Fireball!”

As soon as I spoke, a bigger fireball than last time appeared from the back of my hand, hitting the target dummy and exploding.

However, it still wasn’t as strong as I’d hope. As I’d thought, there must be something else in the chanting.

However, I shouldn’t be too disappointed in the lack of improvement. In this test, failing once does not matter that much. If you continuously fail, you can use “The Fire’s End” on your 3rd and final try.

With this in mind, I turned towards the instructor. However, his reaction was different from what I expected.

“Wh- What sort of power is this.”

Huh? I didn’t see that much change from my weaker fireball earlier. Could it be…

“Hey, just earlier weren’t you suggesting that my magic was weak?”

“I meant it was strong!”

As soon as I asked the question, the reply came back almost instantly.

Is the “Fireball” really supposed to be this strong. I thought it was weak since I’ve learned it soon after arriving in this parallel world. Anyway, it’s likely just because I’m a lucky newbie. Such feats would not be that big of a deal for a pro mage. Probably.

“Anyway, is this good enough for the test?”

“If you’re talking about whether you’ll pass or fail, I can almost guarantee you’ll pass. By the way, Yuji, what sort of lifestyle have you had up till now.”

“I guess just a normal one.”

“Such magic should be impossible living a normal life…”

Continuing the conversation, we proceeded to the next level of the test.

“The next test is Swordsmanship! This test requires both a tamer and a swordsman. Have you brought the swords?”

After he had finished speaking, Instructor Rejin looked in my direction. It seemed like all the swordsmen that were left had brought their swords.

Even if you can do magic without a wand, you can’t practice swordsmanship without a sword. I must find something that can pass off as one quick.

With this in mind, I examined the magic I knew. As I was doing so I came upon a spell named “Sword Summoner”.

Because I’d just learned earlier that chanting makes your spells stronger, I did just that while casting the spell. Soon after, a sword began to appear in my hand.

It wasn’t too heavy, nor too light, it felt perfect. However, I realized I had completely no idea how to use a sword, so I cast the spell “Swordsmanship Enhancement”.

Because I was sort of embarrassed using spells to enhance my ability, I cast the spell without chanting, knowing that its strength would be weakened. Anyway, they never said that the use of spells was illegal, so it wouldn’t exactly be a rule violation.

Seeing that, Instructor Rejin looked towards me.

“What did you do just now?”

“Magic. I made a sword.”

Saying that, I shook my sword. It looked like strength wasn’t gonna be a problem as well.

“Anyway, ready your swords!”

It did not come out together with a sheath, I cannot put it away, I can use it for the time being for the exam.

While I was waiting for my turn and watching the fight, I was thinking about it.

I am not a swordsman but a tamer, I seem to be the last in the line.

“Ok, the first person, come!”

“Let’s go!”

Having said that, the first team of swordsmen unsheathed their swords and headed for the instructor. Instead of a practice sword, they’re using the real thing. Isn’t that a bit dangerous?

Thinking about that, it seemed really scary. However, the instructor lightly parries the sword without being in danger, then points the sword at the examinee’s neck.
Apparently the difference in skill level is so massive that it doesn’t become dangerous.

“Your strength is lacking, but you have good control. Next!”

The next candidate was carrying a smaller sword. However, compared to the first candidate, after a couple of times, the examinee threw the sword towards the instructor and gave up.

The third candidate lost in a similar fashion to the second. After which, my turn had finally come.
