The Biography of Albrecht – Chapter 6

Translator: Nezu

Albrecht didn’t want to just kill a big animal; he wanted to do it properly. Eric was currently at the lumberyard—leaving his house empty. The children took advantage of this and gathered inside.

“Hold it tightly. I’m going to slice his head off in one swoop. Don’t take your eyes off.”

The cow didn’t scream. Instead, it took a step back, looking like it somehow knew about its imminent death. It shook its head back and forth as it cried.

Albrecht had instructed the kids beforehand to hold onto the cow tightly. Now, however, he thought that killing it while it struggled would be a good way to train.

He directed his sword at the top of its head. He focused his force at that point and swung down the sword faster than the speed of light.

The children had no idea how it all happened even though they were watching it closely. They saw Albrecht holding the sword over the cow’s head and then it suddenly fell down. The cow was slain at once.

The children gripped onto the string wrapped around the cow with all their might and fell on their butts. The cut was done so smoothly—not even a drop of blood had fallen. After a while, it gushed out like a fountain. The severed head even remained breathing for a while. Eventually, though, it lost its life after it squinted its eyes and lolled out its tongue.

The cow’s huge body fell to the side. It convulsed for a moment then stopped.

“Wow! Captain, you killed it!”

The kids around him kept shouting. Some even tried to imitate him while holding sticks. Albrecht went into Eric’s makeshift cabin carrying the cow’s severed head. He wiped the sword on a bedsheet and covered the bed with straw. Then he threw the head on the bed.

He laughed as he wondered what kind of expression Eric would make when he returned.

Albrecht waited for dinner in his room as he looked out the window and watched the sun set.

The whole first floor of the castle’s fortified tower was a hall and a place where his family ate.

When they weren’t eating, the long table would be pushed to the side. His father would sit on the lord’s seat and deal with things involving complaints and trials of the territory’s people. He would listen to the advice of the bishop and the butler and handle the territory’s official affairs.

Albrecht and his parents’ rooms were on the second floor. The whole third floor was used as a lookout.

But honestly, the tower would probably meet its end once its outer walls, which was actually just a wooden fence, were penetrated. Fortified? Yeah, right.

Albrecht was thinking of mobilizing their people to build a bigger fortress once he became the lord.

At that moment, Burkhardt rode his horse into the castle while shouting angrily.

“Albrecht! Albrecht! Get over here now!”

Burkhardt seemed furious. He even used Albrecht’s real name instead of his nickname to call him out.

Albrecht instantly had a hunch. It had been found out that he had killed a cow. Eric’s makeshift cabin was far from Hoenkaltern Mountain. It wasn’t on the way to where his father went. Eric definitely told him everything.

Albrecht headed towards the courtyard. Adelheid met him halfway and looked at her son with confusion in her eyes.

“What’s going on?”

Albrecht ignored his mother and went out straight into the courtyard. Burkhardt stared fiercely at Albrecht with his big, eagle-like eyes and said, “Do you even know what you’ve done?”

“He was being rude to me so I did it as payback.”

“What?! You-you’ve finally gone mad!”

Burkhardt suddenly felt like his blood was circulating backwards in his veins when he heard Albrecht’s unexpected reply. He got off his horse, strode up to Albrecht, and kicked him hard in the stomach.

Adelheid was surprised and screamed.

“Darling!”

Burkhardt forcibly pulled and grabbed Albrecht by the collar, and began to hit him with his leather-gloved fist.

Albrecht was being beaten up. This was the first time that his father obstinately hit him with such brute force, but he didn’t think the pain he felt mattered.

Adelheid and the estate’s bishop, Peter, were shocked and tried to stand between them to stop Burkhardt.

“Back off! Wife, you back off. I’ll make this bastard a man today without fail!”

Burkhardt yelled loudly, his voice resonant like the roar of a lion or a tiger. Both Adelheid and Peter were pushed away. Albrecht, who saw his mother fall, felt heartbroken.

Albrecht had never seen his father so angry that he lost reason. He was strict but he would always keep his cool. Yes, he would make him lean against the wall and hit his thigh with a wooden stick, but he’d tell him what he did wrong.

Burkhardt pushed Albrecht down and unfastened his sword belt. Then he started beating him hard with the scabbard.

A feeling of sadness surged up inside Albrecht.

What did I do wrong? Should you really hit your son like this just for that one f*cking cow? Couldn’t we just give him another…

Adelheid tried stopping Burkhardt several times with her body. Every time she was knocked down, she’d continue to cling onto him. This brought Albrecht to tears.

Albrecht’s sword was confiscated and he was ordered to be put on probation. Burkhardt gave this order to him not as a father, but as the lord. He wasn’t allowed to leave his room until he learned to fix his disorderly conduct.

As Albrecht laid in his room, Bishop Peter came in to heal his wounds.

Peter was a bishop who not only took care of mass but also assisted the lord in administrative affairs. If Hans, the butler, was in charge of managing the goods that comes from the people and the warehouse, then Peter was in charge of managing cash dispensing as well as the order and transportation of timber.

As he applied ointment to his bruised skin, Peter told Albrecht, “You’ve gone too far this time.”

“Is the bishop saying that I was wrong?”

Peter answered with a look of bewilderment. “Then, are you not?”

“Isn’t it enough to compensate him with another cow? My father’s too much for hitting me, his own son, like that.”

Peter wanted to answer him immediately, but he considered his words first before saying, “Young master, that cow was not just any other cow. It was Eric’s most prized possession; it was very important to him. It is the lord’s duty to protect the lives and the property of the people in his estate. And you, young master, are the lord’s successor. This isn’t simply a problem where you could just pay back the property that you had damaged. This was a breach of duty.”

There were a few people in the territory who weren’t afraid of Albrecht no matter how strong he was. They were his parents, Arnold, and Peter. Peter and his father would always talk about honor and duty, but he always found it boring. What was wrong with a strong person doing whatever he wanted?

“Ugh, again with that old-fashioned talk. It’s so boring.”

“Young master.”

Peter shook his head in disappointment. He continued to apply ointment to the wounds without saying a word. Then he got to his feet.

“I used to think that young master’s strength is a blessing from God. Now, I think that it might be a curse.”

Peter would always visit Albrecht once a day to apply ointment on his wounds. Two days later, the bruises and lacerated wounds on his body were already healed. There were only some marks left. When he saw his remarkable recovery rate, he looked at his ointment and wondered if it had always been this effective.

Five days later, all the scars disappeared. He wasn’t seriously injured, but all those wounds weren’t minor injuries either. That big Burkhardt had gotten so riled up that he struck the kid with all his might. This was such a ridiculous recuperative power.

Six days later, the ever energetic Albrecht felt it was more painful doing nothing than being hit. As his annoyance grew, his anger towards Eric also grew. As he stayed in his room all day long, his anger turned into hatred.

Albrecht vowed to leave tomorrow by any means and tear Eric apart.
