Episode 6: Apparently the School Saint was Dark

“So, what is going to be your excuse?”

“Whaaa?”

Itsuki-san made a strange voice.

She didn’t seem to understand what I was talking about at all, so I let out a big sigh.

“Saint-sama is so popular that men shouldn’t talk to her, but she skipped class after disappearing with some guy, pulling him by the arm.”

“Oh… That’s right…”

She seemed to remember what she had done and again buried her face in her lap in a daze. It made me wonder whether she felt lonely or depressed.

“What should I do…?”

She looked up anxiously at me.

No, well, it’s… cute. It sure is cute, but you have to remember that this is happening because of your own lack of planning.

“It’s a combination of Itsuki Sana, one of the most popular people since the beginning of St. Joseph’s Academy, and a mob guy. It’s difficult to make it look natural.”

When I muttered this, Itsuki-san looked somewhat unhappy.

“What?”

“You are not a mob guy.”

I couldn’t help but feel choked by the unexpected words.

“Why?”

“Why would a mob guy climb up there and risk his life to try to convince me to trust him?”

She was looking down, so I couldn’t see what expression she had on her face, but her ears had turned bright red. It makes me feel embarrassed when people say things like that.

“Well… Whether I’m a mob or not is beside the point.”

“Don’t put it aside.”

“Why?”

“What do you mean, why? …You were really brave just now.”

She mumbled to herself and buried her face again.

I guess she’s still weak-willed.

“For now, we’ll just have to pretend that there was something you wanted to talk to me about, don’t you think?”

“I talked to Kaoru-kun? About what?”

She tilted her head dubiously. It’s true. We didn’t have too much contact and I couldn’t think of anything to discuss.

“Hmmm… For example, do you want me to introduce you to some of my male friends?”

“No. I don’t want to. It’d make me look like I’m fishing for a man.”

“Maybe you want to know how to play a video game.”

“Games, games… I used to play Dead World Village.”

Why were you playing retro games that are so insanely difficult? Or rather, I’ve never played them.

“I don’t know. What about smartphone games?”

“For smartphone games, I used to play PIBG.”

“I see.”

PIBG is an FPS game that you can play on your smartphone.
FPS is an abbreviation for ‘First-Person Shooter.’ It’s an action game genre where you move and fight from the perspective of the main character. PIBG is a smartphone game app that picks up firearms and fights to kill enemies, but the content is radical and highly addictive, and a ban has been issued in India. Of course, it’s popular here in Japan, and there was a time when everyone was playing it.

“Wow, that’s surprising. Do girls play PIBG too?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“It’s a stress reliever. I shoot a lot.”

This girl is no good. Her roots are so much shadier than mine that I can’t save her.

“There seems to be a lot of PIBG girls’ clubs, but I don’t see anyone around me, though.”

“That’s exactly what you should have done with the people around you.”

“I don’t like it. And they are all young ladies.”

“I’m not playing this barbaric game,” She added.

I think Itsuki-san, who has been on the escalator since she was a child, is more of a young lady, but I couldn’t go into that right now, so I let it pass.

I also played PIBG for a while. That game is interesting, but on the other hand, my eyes have been so tired that I haven’t played much recently. However, this seems to be an unexpectedly good point of contact.

“We can use that. Okay, well, I guess we’ll just be friends on PIBG.”

“Ehh? What do you do as a friend?”

“Let’s just say we met by accident when we were partying in a match.”

A stray party is a randomly formed team. We happened to be at the same party, and while talking in text and voice chat, we found that we were at the same school. If you were to form a party on a server other than Japan, you may not understand them at all because the people around you are speaking in foreign languages, but if you are doing it on a domestic server, the possibility of not meeting is not zero. It’s pretty low, though.

By the way, my first stray party was with Taiwanese and Pakistani. I made a mistake when choosing the server. I couldn’t understand what the three teammates were saying at all, and I was instantly killed without any cooperation. It’s one of the reasons I stopped joining stray parties.

“So, you realized from the speech and voice that I was Itsuki-san, and at that time, you guessed it in the corridor.”

The story goes that Sai-san was so surprised by this that she got upset and took me away anyway.
“Can’t you make it all add up somehow?”

“Yes… If that’s the case, I might be able to fake it somehow. I need a situation where I had to do it because a lot of people saw that I pulled you in.”

“That’s what I mean.”

“You’re smarter than I thought. I would never have thought of that.”

Itsuki-san looked at me admiringly.

“Isn’t my grade ranking in the middle?”

When I said it, Itsuki-san suddenly laughed, “In the middle of being decent.”

For the time being, the cover story was settled. I haven’t come up with any other good ideas, and this was as far as I could think. If you meet in virtual, you can add as many stories as you want. It was a pretty good strategy for me.

After that, the two of us considered excuses, adjusted and compensated for each other.
