Episode 8: My Best Friend Knew I Was Lying.

When the bell rang, representing the end of the sixth period, I returned to the classroom and was met with a mess.

I was bombarded with questions.

It was a real hassle, but it was because I had delivered her wallet out of the kindness of my heart. I had no choice but to give up.

At any rate, they were surprised by the fact that I was a friend of Itsuki Sana in PIBG, as we had discussed. I was taken away from there, that’s all, nothing more. I strongly insisted that I was just killing time with it earlier and because classes had already started, it was getting hard to go back to it.

It wasn’t long before everyone got convinced that there was no way that the saint of St. Joseph’s Academy, Itsuki Sana, would be related to a mob character boy like me. It was a little sad, but I’m glad the story didn’t get too complicated.

On the contrary, everyone said, “I didn’t know Itsuki-san was a PIBG player too!” If they thought she was an unreachable young lady before, now they probably felt closer to her because she actually played unexpected games. I was not just talking about PIBG. I just barely managed to hold back the urge to tell them that, but that she also makes strange noises like “fungaaa!”

Anyway, that’s how the conversation went down. I was relieved that the conversation didn’t go on too long because of the difference in status.

After homeroom was over, I left the school with my best friend, Kazuharu Sakuma, as if we were running away. I didn’t want to be bombarded with any more questions.

“What was the real story?”

On the way home from school, Kazuharu asked me with a grin.

I’ve known Kazuharu since I entered St. Joseph’s Academy, and he’s now my best friend. He is tall and handsome, with long, slightly tousled hair. He was popular among the female students, but for some reason, he never had a girlfriend and was always playing with me. He’s also joined as a high school student, so he’s an External Student like me.

We spend most of our time together, and the person I go to school with is usually this guy. Today, we went home together in the usual way, but it might have been better to avoid him today.

“No, I just thought it would be nice to try a stray party once in a while.”

“Oh. By chance, huh? You’re the one who hates stray parties, and you tried a stray party?”

“…That’s right.”

Yes, he was the only one who’s known me for a long time, and he knew that I’m lying. Kazuharu knew that I didn’t like PIBG stray parties.

It was partly because my first stray party was with a Pakistani and a Taiwanese, but after that, I didn’t even enjoy playing with Japanese people at all. Ever since then, I’ve only been partying solo or with friends like Kazuharu.

In the first place, I don’t play PIBG that much anymore. I think it’s beyond impossible for me to be playing a stray party and that the other party happens to be the saint of this school. That’s exactly what I did, so I can’t even think about it.

“Huh? So you happened to be at a party with that Itsuki-san?”

“Yeah.”

“And you recognized her from the voice chat, right?”

‘Yeah.”

“And you saw through it and went all the way to Itsuki-san to tell her about it, right?”

“… Right.”

Kazuharu grinned.

“Even if there are a hundred steps in the middle, that last part is clearly not your character, is it?”

…that’s right.

Even if I really knew Itsuki-san from PIBG and realized that I was her, there was no way I would go to her to confirm it. Moreover, the other party is Itsuki Sana. There was no way I was going to go on such an adventure. I had no excuse when I got confronted with it.

That’s when it happened. I received the notification of a LINE message.

I looked at my phone, saw Itsuki-san’s name and a message from her pop up.

The message read, “I managed. I’m really tired, though. How about you?” That’s all it said.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!? You exchanged LINE with that Itsuki Sana?!”

Kazuharu looked at my phone and shouted in surprise.

“You idiot! You’re talking too loud! Don’t steal my phone!”

I panicked and looked around. Thank God there were no students nearby.

Even so, Itsuki-san, you’re sending me messages at the wrong time.

“It’s not that I was interested… I just exchanged it as a matter of course.”

It was not a lie. It was completely random.

I wasn’t planning to exchange contacts.

“Wow, wow, wow… Kaoru. I’m glad I asked you to join PIBG…”

It was this guy who asked me to play PIBG with him in the first place. I played a lot in the beginning.

Yeah, I know. In many ways, I’m glad I’m playing PIBG. I mean, in an excuse kind of way!

After this, Kazuharu continued to chase me, but I kept on ignoring him.

Even if they knew it was a lie, a lie becomes the truth if you don’t admit otherwise. At the least, for the sake of her position, I knew that I had to continue to spit out lies.

(Why am I caring so much about Itsuki-san…)

To be honest, I don’t have any obligation to go this far with her.

But… I’ve been curious about her. I’ve been thinking about her for a while now, and I couldn’t wait to get back to her. It was a real feeling that I could not lie to myself about.

While Kazuharu was choosing a juice from the vending machine, I opened LINE and typed a quick reply to Itsuki-san.

[I’m tired as h**l, too. I’ve got it under control, but watch out for blunders. Pink pudding.]

The reply popped up immediately.

[I will kill you!!]

I guess I’d better turn off the pop-up notifications, I thought with a sigh.

It’s been a h**l of a day.
